Full-Coverage Film Cooling With Short Normal Injection Holes

An experimental and computational investigation was conducted on the film cooling adiabatic effectiveness of a flat plate with full coverage film cooling. The full coverage film cooling array was comprised of ten rows of coolant holes, arranged in a staggered pattern, with short L/D=1, normal coolant holes. A single row of cooland holes was also examined to determine the accuracy of a superposition prediction of the full coverage adiabatic effectiveness performance. Large density coolant jets and high mainstream turbulence conditions were utilized to simulate realistic engine conditions. High-resolution adiabatic effectiveness measurements were obtained using infrared imaging techniques and a large-scale flat plate model. Optimum adiabatic effectiveness was found to occur for a blowing ratio of M=0.65. At this blowing ratio separation of the coolant jet immediately downstream of the hole was observed. For M=0.65, the high mainstream turbulence decreased the spatially averaged effectiveness level by 12 percent. The high mainstream turbulence produced a larger effect for lower blowing ratios. The superposition model based on single row effectiveness results over-predicted the full coverage effectiveness levels.

The film-cooling performance of a flat plate in the presence of low and high freestream turbulence is investigated using liquid crystal thermography. High-resolution distributions of the adiabatic effectiveness are determined over the film-cooled surface of the flat plate using the hue method and image processing. Three blowing rates are investigated for a model with three straight holes spaced three diameters apart, with density ratio near unity. High freestream turbulence is shown to increase the area-averaged effectiveness at high blowing rates, but decrease it at low blowing rates. At low blowing ratio, freestream turbulence clearly reduces the coverage area of the cooling air due to increased mixing with the main flow. However, at high blowing ratio, when much of the jet has lifted off in the low turbulence case, high freestream turbulence turns its increased mixing into an asset, entraining some of the coolant that penetrates into the main flow and mixing it with the air near the surface.

Detailed film cooling effectiveness distributions are obtained on a flat plate using the pressure sensitive paint (PSP) technique. The effects of average blowing ratio (M = 0.25–1.0) and coolant – to – mainstream density ratio (DR = 1.0–1.4) are evaluated in a low speed wind tunnel with a freestream velocity of 8.5 m/s and a freestream turbulence intensity of 6.8%. The coolant – to – mainstream density ratio is varied by using either nitrogen (DR = 1.0) or argon (DR = 1.4) as the coolant gases. The double hole geometry consists of a row of simple angle (θ = 35°), cylindrical holes coupled with one row of compound angle holes (θ = 45°, β = 50°). With the selected geometry, the compound holes effectively weaken the counter rotating vortex pair formed within the traditional simple angle hole. Therefore, the surface film cooling effectiveness is increased compared to a single row of simple angle film cooling holes. While increasing the blowing ratio decreases the film cooling effectiveness, the severity of the film cooling effectiveness reduction is less than with the single row of holes.

Experimental results are presented that describe the development and structure of flow downstream of a single row of film-cooling holes inclined at 30 deg from the test surface in spanwise/normal planes. With this configuration, holes are spaced 6d apart in the spanwise direction in a single row. Results are presented for a ratio of injectant density to free-stream density near 1.0, and injection blowing ratios from 0.5 to 1.5. Compared to results measured downstream of simple angle (streamwise) oriented holes, spanwise-averaged adiabatic effectiveness values are significantly higher for the same spanwise hole spacing, normalized streamwise location x/d, and blowing ratio m when m = 1.0 and 1.5 for x/d < 80. The injectant from the spanwise/normal holes is also less likely to lift off of the test surface than injectant from simple angle holes. This is because lateral components of momentum keep higher concentrations of injectant in closer proximity to the surface. As a result, local adiabatic effectiveness values show significantly greater spanwise variations and higher local maxima at locations immediately downstream of the holes. Spanwise-averaged iso-energetic Stanton number ratios range between 1.07 and 1.26, which are significantly higher than values measured downstream of two other injection configurations (one of which is simple angle, streamwise holes) when compared at the same x/d and blowing ratio.

The film-cooling performance of a flat plate in the presence of low and high freestream turbulence is investigated using thermochromic liquid crystal thermography. Distributions of the convective heat transfer coefficient and adiabatic effectiveness are determined over the film-cooled surface of the flat plate. Three blowing rates are investigated for a model with one hole oriented at a compound angle of 45° and with an injection angle of 30° from the flat plate surface. An increase in heat transfer coefficient due to mass injection is clearly observed in the images and is quantitatively determined for both the low and high freestream turbulence cases. The increase in heat transfer coefficient is greater than in previously published research, possibly due to the use of different, more representative thermal boundary conditions upstream of the injection location. At low blowing ratio, freestream turbulence is shown to reduce the adiabatic effectiveness due to increased mixing between the cooling air and the main flow. However, at high blowing ratio, when much of the jet has lifted off in the low turbulence case, high freestream turbulence turns its increased mixing into an asset, entraining some of the coolant that penetrates into the main flow and mixing it with the air near the surface. This paper also contributes high-resolution contour plots that show the wider spreading of cooling air over the film-cooled surface as a result of high turbulence, and the asymmetric regions of high heat transfer.

The performance of film cooling designs is typically quantified by the adiabatic effectiveness, with results presented in terms of non-dimensional parameters such as the blowing ratio, momentum flux ratio, or velocity ratio of the coolant to the overflowing mainstream gas. In order to appropriately model experimental film cooling designs, the correct coolant flow parameter should be selected. In this work, a single row of axial round holes and shaped holes were placed in a flat plate and tested within a recirculating wind tunnel at low speeds and temperatures. Mainstream turbulence intensity and boundary layer thickness were set similar to expected engine conditions. The density ratio of the coolant was varied from 1.2 to 1.6 in order to independently vary the parameters listed above, which were tested at six different conditions for each density ratio. High-resolution IR thermography was used to measure adiabatic effectiveness downstream of the single row of cooling holes. The results indicate that adiabatic effectiveness performance of cylindrical and shaped holes are scaled most effectively using velocity ratio, providing much more accurate results then when the blowing ratio is used.

The injection orientation angle and the groove on the surface caused the effect of the various and irregular shaped hole injection due to the different orientation injection. The results showed that the new phenomenon of film effectiveness distributions was found on the grooved surface compared with the flat plate case. Film effectiveness distributions for the β = 30° were found to be the discontinuous strips. The surface averaged film effectiveness with the orientation angle of 30° was found to decrease with the increase of the blowing ratio. Additionally, the reverse trend was observed with the orientation angle of 150°. The film effectiveness with the orientation angle of 90° only slightly changed with the increase of the blowing ratio.

Experimental research into heat transfer from full-coverage film-cooled surfaces with three injection geometries was described in Part I. This part has two objectives. The first is to present a simple numerical procedure for simulation of heat transfer with full-coverage film cooling. The second objective is to present some of the Stanton number data that was used in Part I of the paper. The data chosen for presentation are the low-Reynolds number, heated-starting-length data for the three injection geometries with five-diameter hole spacing. Sample data sets with high blowing ratio and with ten-diameter hole spacing are also presented. The numerical procedure has been successfully applied to the Stanton number data sets.

Results of a recent joint experimental and computational investigation of the flow through a plenum-fed 7-7-7 shaped film cooling hole are presented. In particular, we compare the measured adiabatic effectiveness and mean temperature against implicit large eddy simulation (iLES) for blowing ratio approximately 2, density ratio 1.6, and Reynolds number 6000. The results overall show reasonable agreement between the iLES and the experimental results for the adiabatic effectiveness and gross features of the mean temperature field. Notable discrepancies include the centerline adiabatic effectiveness near the hole, where the iLES under-predicts the measurements by Δη ≈ 0.05, and the near-wall temperature, where the simulation results show features not present in the measurements. After showing this comparison, the iLES results are used to examine features that were not measured in the experiments, including the in-hole flow and the dominant fluxes in the mean internal energy equation downstream of the hole. Key findings include that the flow near the entrance to the hole is highly turbulent and that there is a large region of backflow near the exit of the hole. Further, the well-known counter-rotating vortex pair downstream of the hole is observed. Finally, the typical gradient diffusion hypothesis for the Reynolds heat flux is evaluated and found to be incorrect.
