This paper reviews the application of expert systems in a flexible pavement (ESFP). It involves a brief introduction to expert systems explaining how technology plays a role in the creation of latest approaches to highway engineering, development, and maintenance. The paper provides an outline for possibilities of future researches. The purpose of this paper is to summarise the latest outcomes of researches related to the process of engineering, developing and implementing an expert scheme for flexible pavement construction. Moreover, the paper shows the necessity to develop an expert system that can help to control damage in tropical regions. The current expert system does not accommodate the needs for damages and repairs for tropical climates. The tropical region’s highway’s flexible pavements are based on the knowledge of experts who analysed and maintained highway pavements. This system enables the performance engineers to analyse, determine and customise information to help relevant parties during decision-making processes.

Nowadays, higher education worldwide is affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. It has affected students’ attendance in the universities and causes universities to close down in more than 190 countries. On the other hand, novice engineers studied only a few lectures related to highway engineering. Their lectures have included very little knowledge about asphalt pavement construction as highway engineering consists of many areas that are not studied in detail during their studying years subject to their traditional education. Due to all mentioned, a new drive to promote online learning paves the way to evaluate our future approach to curriculum development and delivery of educational materials for engineering courses. However, experts can offer solutions to these problems using their past experience. Hence, a system that allows experts to share their experience with other engineers after completing a project is needed. Nevertheless, the web-based expert system for maintaining flexible pavement problems in tropical regions (ESTAMPSYS) designed in this study is a novel concept. Prior to developing this system, the need for such a system was determined through literature review and validated through a questionnaire survey. Experts were interviewed, and a questionnaire survey was conducted to construct the knowledge base of the system. Knowledge was presented as rules and coded in software through PHP programming. Web pages that support the user interface were designed using a framework that consists of CSS, HTML, and J-Query. Furthermore, the system was tested by an array of users engaged in highway engineering, namely, experts, teaching experts, novice engineers, and students. The mean values of the overall system evaluation performed by 20 users using a five-point Likert scale were 4, 4.5, 3.75, 4.25, 5, 4, and 3.5. Expert and user satisfaction prove the effectiveness of the proposed system.

Nowadays, due to the constraints of budget and time, the prioritization of traffic calming projects before installation of traffic calming measures is vital for transportation engineers and urban planners. The purpose of this study is to develop an expert system for prioritizing streets that are affected by problems associated with traffic safety using Fuzzy Logic. Expert systems have been used widely and globally for facilitating decision-making processes in various fields of engineering. Due to the uncertainty and vagueness in traffic and transportation related problems, the use of fuzzy logic in the inference engines and decision-making processes of expert systems, is effective. In the proposed expert system, effective parameters in prioritizing traffic calming projects in residential streets including traffic volume, residential density, differential speed and number of accidents are investigated. The Fuzzy Logic toolbox, which is embedded in MATLAB (R2010b), is employed to design and simulate this expert system on the basis of Fuzzy Logic. A specific GUI was developed for this purpose. By developing this system, engineers and decision-makers will be able to rank projects according to their importance. This expert system was tested through prioritizing a number of residential streets in the city of Tehran. The output of the tests showed that the proposed system is helpful in prioritizing different traffic calming projects. Finally, the evaluation of the system was conducted. According to the assessment, most evaluators acknowledged the efficiency and effectiveness of the system.

One of the most pressing problems facing Canada is the condition of roadway infrastructure. Making good maintenance decisions requires years of practical experience and judgement. Expert systems have great potential for solving pavement maintenance problems that usually require significant human expertise for solution. Expert systems, also known as knowledge-based systems, have been used as a means for conveying pavement maintenance knowledge gained through research and field experience to individuals responsible for maintaining asphalt pavements. An expert system is defined as an interactive computer program which documents judgement, experience, intuition, and other information in order to provide knowledgeable advice. This paper describes the development of PMAS, a pavement maintenance advisory system, which can assist highway engineers in planning effective flexible or asphalt concrete pavement maintenance strategies. The system uses two alternative commercial expert system shells. The system questions the user in a multiple-choice format in everyday English and (or) by using pictures. The user responds by selecting one or more of the choices provided by the system. At the end of the consultation session, the system displays the most appropriate maintenance strategy along with its life expectancy. PMAS facilitates the decision-making process and could serve as a consultant for field engineers. Key words: expert system, knowledge-based system, pavement maintenance.

This paper describes the creation of an expert system that is used to diagnose diseases in chili plants using a web-based certainty factor method. This expert system is made based on the weight of symptoms by experts so that users can find out the disease suffered by chili plants based on symptoms that arise. The symptom weight was calculated using the certainty factor method. This method is used to accommodate uncertainties that are often expressed by experts when detecting a disease. The design and manufacture of this expert system are done using the PHP programming language, MySQL database, CSS and the CodeIgniter framework. The results of the analysis between expert and expert systems have 87.09% compatibility level, and based on the calculation of the feasibility of the system with the Delone and McLean model shows that 77.58% of respondents agree Pakarcabaiku.com is a successful system for detecting chili disease.

OBJECTIVE: RXPERT, a prototype, computer-based, expert system that models the decision-making processes for an ambulatory (non-hospital) formulary, is described as an example of how expert systems may be used to support pharmacy decision making. Basic information about expert-system technology is provided through this example. BACKGROUND: Computer-assisted decision making is becoming an important and accepted aspect of complex, health-related decisions. Because expert-system support may become an integral component of future, complex, pharmacy decision making, it is important for pharmacists to become familiar with this technology and its possibilities for supporting pharmacy decisions. METHOD: Expert systems offer the potential advantages of making the human decision-making process explicit, more consistent, easily duplicated in many locations simultaneously, and easy to update and document. Although an expert system is seldom intended to replace human decision makers, it can provide valuable support for complex, multivariable decisions. Typical knowledge-acquisition and knowledge-engineering techniques, as well as the characteristics and structure of expert systems, are described, relative to the development of the RXPERT prototype. CONCLUSIONS: Although RXPERT is not yet in use, the process for using an expert system to support an individual committee member's personal assessment of a drug product is described. Decision-support expert systems are potentially useful to pharmacists in complex decision-making tasks.
