A handful of mass extinctions, scattered through the Phanerozoic, forever changed the course of life on Earth, eliminating large numbers of clades from the evolutionary race and allowing the survivors to diversify following the extinction. These ecological-evolutionary upheavals extirpated whole communities and eliminated otherwise successful clades from the evolutionary race. While the mechanism(s) responsible for most mass extinctions remain to be identified, their impact on the biosphere is self-evident. Thus, recognition of a previously overlooked, severe extinction early in the Phanerozoic provides important new insights and perspectives on the history of lifeIn the course of research on the biogeographic distribution of Early Cambrian metazoan taxa, I compiled a database on the geographic and stratigraphic distribution of metazoan genera. The data are derived from the primary literature on the paleogeographic and stratigraphic distributions and systematics of Early Cambrian fossils. The Russian zonation scheme for the Siberian Platform (incorporating four stages, in ascending order: Tommotian, Atabanian, Botomian, and Toyonian) was employed for biostratigraphic correlations. Correlations of other regions to the Siberian stages were based upon work by F. Debrenne and her colleagues on archaeocyathans and upon M. D. Brasier's correlations from small shelly fossils. While there is no accepted global correlation scheme for Lower Cambrian strata, this approach yields results that are useful at the four-stage level of resolution. The data base currently includes more than 850 genera.Examination of the aggregate data reveals a substantial reduction (>60%) in the global total of genera extant in the Toyonian, in comparison to the Botomian stage. The extinction rate of genera at the end of the Botomian exceeds 80 percent. By comparison, the end-Permian extinction eliminated slightly more than 60 percent of the extant genera.In addition to the general reduction in generic diversity, Brasier (1982) has documented a fall in sea level and reduction in the shelf area. Associated with this regression was a loss of reef-forming archaeocyathan genera. While a small number of archaeocyathan genera persisted into the Toyonian (and a few genera have been reported from Late Cambrian strata in Antarctica), the bulk of archaeocyath diversity was lost in the Botomian. The losses in diversity, extermination of reef-forming organisms, and high turnover in conjunction with a marine regression matches the pattern observed at most other mass extinctions.It is remarkable that this relatively severe extinction has gone mostly unnoticed by paleobiologists. Much of the data is relatively new, a product of intense international study of early metazoan faunas. Most likely, the mass of data produced by Lower Cambrian specialists over the past ten years has yet to reach the treatises and monographs where it can be easily summarized. Also, resolution of patterns within the Early Cambrian has waited on the development of correlations and a satisfactory zonation. Indeed, detailed study of the Botomian extinction will await more accurate correlations.

Ecological observations and paleontological data show that communities of organisms recur in space and time. Various observations suggest that communities largely disappear in extinction events and appear during radiations. This hypothesis, however, has not been tested on a large scale due to a lack of methods for analyzing fossil data, identifying communities, and quantifying their turnover. We demonstrate an approach for quantifying turnover of communities over the Phanerozoic Eon. Using network analysis of fossil occurrence data, we provide the first estimates of appearance and disappearance rates for marine animal paleocommunities in the 100 stages of the Phanerozoic record. Our analysis of 124,605 fossil collections (representing 25,749 living and extinct marine animal genera) shows that paleocommunity disappearance and appearance rates are generally highest in mass extinctions and recovery intervals, respectively, with rates three times greater than background levels. Although taxonomic change is, in general, a fair predictor of ecologic reorganization, the variance is high, and ecologic and taxonomic changes were episodically decoupled at times in the past. Extinction rate, therefore, is an imperfect proxy for ecologic change. The paleocommunity turnover rates suggest that efforts to assess the ecological consequences of the present-day biodiversity crisis should focus on the selectivity of extinctions and changes in the prevalence of biological interactions.

Extinction of species has been a recurrent phenomenon in the history of our planet, but it was generally outweighed in the course of quite a long geological time by the appearance of new species, except, especially, for the five geologically short times when the so-called “Big Five” mass extinctions occurred. Could the current decline in biodiversity be considered as a signal of an ongoing, human-driven sixth mass extinction? This note briefly examines some issues related to: (i) The hypothesized current extinction rate and the magnitude of contemporary global biodiversity loss; (ii) the challenges of comparing them to the background extinction rate and the magnitude of the past Big Five mass extinction events; (iii) briefly considering the effects of the main anthropogenic stressors on ecosystems, including the risk of the emergence of pandemic diseases. A comparison between the Pleistocene fauna dynamics with the present defaunation process and the cascading effects of recent anthropogenic actions on ecosystem structure and functioning suggests that habitat degradation, ecosystem fragmentation, and alien species introduction are important stressors increasing the negative impact on biodiversity exerted by anthropogenic-driven climate changes and their connected effects. In addition, anthropogenic ecological stressors such as urbanization, landscapes, and wildlife trade, creating new opportunities for virus transmission by augmenting human contact with wild species, are among the main factors triggering pandemic diseases.

AbstractClimate change is a critical factor affecting biodiversity. However, the quantitative relationship between temperature change and extinction is unclear. Here, we analyze magnitudes and rates of temperature change and extinction rates of marine fossils through the past 450 million years (Myr). The results show that both the rate and magnitude of temperature change are significantly positively correlated with the extinction rate of marine animals. Major mass extinctions in the Phanerozoic can be linked to thresholds in climate change (warming or cooling) that equate to magnitudes >5.2 °C and rates >10 °C/Myr. The significant relationship between temperature change and extinction still exists when we exclude the five largest mass extinctions of the Phanerozoic. Our findings predict that a temperature increase of 5.2 °C above the pre-industrial level at present rates of increase would likely result in mass extinction comparable to that of the major Phanerozoic events, even without other, non-climatic anthropogenic impacts.

Studies of extinction in the fossil record commonly involve comparisons of taxonomic extinction rates, often expressed as the percentage of taxa (e.g., families or genera) going extinct in a time interval. Such extinction rates may be influenced by factors that do not reflect the intrinsic severity of an extinction trigger. Two identical triggering events (e.g., bolide impacts, sea level changes, volcanic eruptions) could lead to different taxonomic extinction rates depending on factors specific to the time interval in which they occur, such as the susceptibility of the fauna or flora to extinction, the stability of food webs, the positions of the continents, and so on. Thus, it is possible for an extinction event with a higher taxonomic extinction rate to be caused by an intrinsically less severe trigger, compared to an event with a lower taxonomic extinction rate.Here, we isolate the effects of taxonomic susceptibility on extinction rates. Specifically, we quantify the extent to which the taxonomic extinction rate in a substage is elevated or depressed by the vulnerability to extinction of classes extant in that substage. Using a logistic regression model, we estimate that the taxonomic susceptibility of marine fauna to extinction has generally declined through the Phanerozoic, and we adjust the observed extinction rate in each substage to estimate the intrinsic extinction severity more accurately. We find that mass extinctions do not generally occur during intervals of unusually high susceptibility, although susceptibility sometimes increases in post-extinction recovery intervals. Furthermore, the susceptibility of specific animal classes to extinction is generally similar in times of background and mass extinction, providing no evidence for differing regimes of extinction selectivity. Finally, we find an inverse correlation between extinction rate within substages and the evenness of diversity of major taxonomic groups, but further analyses indicate that low evenness itself does not cause high rates of extinction.

In this book we have studied a large number of recent quantitative models aimed at explaining a variety of large-scale trends seen in the fossil record. These trends include the occurrence of mass extinctions, the distribution of the sizes of extinction events, the distribution of the lifetimes of taxa, the distribution of the numbers of species per genus, and the apparent decline in the average extinction rate. None of the models presented match all the fossil data perfectly, but all of them offer some suggestion of possible mechanisms which may be important to the processes of extinction and origination. In this chapter we conclude our review by briefly summarizing the properties and predictions of each of the models once more. Much of the interest in these models has focused on their ability (or lack of ability) to predict the observed values of exponents governing distributions of a number of quantities. In Table 7.1 we summarize the values of these exponents for each of the models. Most of the models we have described attempt to provide possible explanations for a few specific observations. (1) The fossil record appears to have a power-law (i.e., scale-free) distribution of the sizes of extinction events, with an exponent close to 2 (section 1.2.2.1). (2) The distribution of the lifetimes of genera also appears to follow a power law, with exponent about 1.7 (section 1.2.2.4). (3) The number of species per genus appears to follow a power law with exponent about 1.5 (section 1.2.3.1). One of the first models to attempt an explanation of these observations was the NK model of Kauffman and co-workers. In this model, extinction is driven by revolutionary avalanches. When tuned to the critical point between chaotic and frozen regimes, the model displays a power-law distribution of avalanche sizes with an exponent of about 1. It has been suggested that this could in turn lead to a power-law distribution of the sizes of extinction events, although the value of 1 for the exponent is not in agreement with the value 2 measured in the fossil extinction record.
