BACKGROUND:The McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ) is one of the most widely used instruments in the world to evaluate patients with chronic pain. However, differences in languages and cultural backgrounds have hindered its standardization in Japan.OBJECTIVE:To standardize the MPQ in Japan.DESIGN:The reliability and validity of a Japanese version of the MPQ (JMPQ) were examined using a translation-based methodology, which followed a format similar to the original MPQ.SETTING:Multidisciplinary pain treatment centre of a university hospital in Japan.PATIENTS:Consecutive out-patients (n=152) with chronic pain.METHODS:Each patient completed the JMPQ, other pain rating scales (visual analogue scale, verbal rating scale, numerical rating scale) and the state-trait anxiety inventory. A subset of these patients (n=40) were tested again two weeks later.RESULTS:Acceptable levels of reliability and validity of the JMPQ, and independence of the JMPQ subscales from other pain rating scales were confirmed by principal component analysis. Chronic pain patients did not show marked levels of anxiety as might have been expected.CONCLUSIONS:The findings suggest that the JMPQ possesses sufficient merits as a pain rating scale from the standpoint of its reliability and validity. Furthermore, it is suggested that the JMPQ can be used to measure qualitative aspects of pain transcending differences in linguistic characteristics.

Background/objective The ADL-focused Occupation-based Neurobehavioral Evaluation (A-ONE) can be used to evaluate both performances of activities of daily living (ADL) tasks and neurobehavioural problems that interfere with ADL task performance among clients with neurological disorders. Research studies have demonstrated acceptable psychometric properties of the original version of the A-ONE as well as the Rasch analysed version. The aim of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of the Japanese version of the A-ONE (A-ONE J). Methods Rasch analysis was performed on data obtained from eight different hospitals in Japan on performances of 150 individuals diagnosed with a stroke based on the functional independence (FI) scale items. The rating scale structure was investigated and internal validity and reliability were examined. Unidimensionality of the items was examined by mean square infit values and principal component analysis of residuals. The targeting between person ability and item difficulty was explored, as well as the separation reliability. Finally, psychometric values and item difficulty hierarchies obtained in this study were compared to the original Rasch analysis of the A-ONE. Results The rating scale structure might be improved by collapsing two categories twice (from five categories to three categories). Unidimensionality of the items was obtained for 20 items. Targeting was acceptable, and separation reliability for item calibrations was high and acceptable for people. Conclusion/limitations: This study provides important information regarding the possibilities for revising the ordinal A-ONE J FI Scale, converting it into a unidimensional scale. Further study with increased and more diverse sample is needed.

In this paper, the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule for Children originally developed in 1999 by Laurent, et al. was adapted for use in Japan. In Study 1, a total of 763 children in Grades 4 to 6 completed this Schedule, and 103 of them completed it again about three months later. Principal factor analysis with promax rotation identified two factors, positive and negative affect, in the Japanese version, whose alphas (over .80) and test-retest correlations (over .50) were sufficient to indicate internal consistency and stability over time. In Study 2, a total of 328 children completed the Japanese version, the Depression Self-rating Scale for Children, and the Trait Form of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children. Intercorrelations showed convergent and discriminant validity using these self-report measures of depression and anxiety. Overall these data support the reliability and validity of this Japanese version.

The Ten Item Personality Inventory (TIPI; Gosling, Rentfrow, & Swann, 2003 ) is a widely used very brief measure of the Big Five personality dimensions. Oshio, Abe, and Cutrone (2012) have developed a Japanese version of the TIPI (TIPI-J), which demonstrated acceptable levels of reliability and validity. Until now, all studies examining the validity of the TIPI-J have been conducted in the Japanese language; this reliance on a single language raises concerns about the instrument’s content validity because the instrument could demonstrate reliability (e.g., retest) and some forms of validity (e.g., convergent) but still not capture the full range of the dimensions as originally conceptualized in English. Therefore, to test the content validity of the Japanese TIPI with respect to the original Big Five formulation, we examine the convergence between scores on the TIPI-J and scores on the English-language Big Five Inventory (i.e., the BFI-E), an instrument specifically designed to optimize Big Five content coverage. Two-hundred and twenty-eight Japanese undergraduate students, who were all learning English, completed the two instruments. The results of correlation analyses and structural equation modeling demonstrate the theorized congruence between the TIPI-J and the BFI-E, supporting the content validity of the TIPI-J.
