This study contributes to the evaluation of the antibacterial effect of hy-droethanolic extract of peppermint (Mentha piperita L.) rich in phenolic compounds on the growth of reference bacterial strains Streptococcus ther-mophilus (ATCC19258) and Lactobacillus bulgaricus (ATCC11842) as well as the consequences of its addition at a dose of 6% on the quality of a steamed yoghurt. The phenolic compounds of peppermint collected in Algeria were extracted from the ground leaves of the plant in a hydroethanolic solution. The antimicrobial activity of peppermint extract and the quality of yoghurt were assessed by the following measures: bacterial growth test, disc diffu-sion test, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), pH, acidity, viscosity and the organoleptic tests (taste, odor, color and freshness). The results revealed that hydroethanolic extract of M. piperita L. had 25 mg GAE/ml of extract of total phenolic compound and a content of 8.28 mg QE/ml of extract of flavonoids. This extract had a bactericidal against S. thermophilus and a bacteriostatic inhibitory effect against L. bulgaricus. The addition of phenolic compounds of M. piperita L. at 154.02 mg GAE/100ml significantly reduced (p<0.05) acidity, viscosity, and the germ increase of S. thermophilus and L. bulgaricus in steamed yogurt prepared with 6% of hydroethanolic extract of the studied plant compared to the control. However, the fermented milk treated with the 6% of pepper-mint extract was very well appreciated by the tasting jury, just like the yo-ghurt control.

The Family

A rare noriridoid and six known phenolic compounds were isolated from the parasite plant Rhopalocnemis phalloides. Using spectroscopic methods, these compounds were identified as 10-acetoxy- cis-2-oxabicyclo[4.3.0]nonan-7-en-3-one (1), p-hydroxybenzoic acid (2), protocatechuic acid (3), gallic acid (4), coniferyl aldehyde (5), l- O-trans-cinnamoyl-β-D-glucoside (6), and coniferin (7). The noriridoid compound is the first reported from the family Balanophoraceae. Of the isolated compounds, coniferyl aldehyde had the strongest inhibitory effect on nitric oxide production (IC50 = 8.24 μM).

An ethanolic extract and its ethyl acetate-soluble fraction from leaves ofCalendula officinalisL. (Asteraceae) were found to show an inhibitory effect on amylase. From the crude extract fractions, one new phenolic acid glucoside, 6′-O-vanilloyl-β-D-glucopyranose, was isolated, together with twenty-four known compounds including five phenolic acid glucosides, five phenylpropanoids, five coumarins, and nine flavonoids. Their structures were elucidated based on chemical and spectral data. The main components, isoquercitrin, isorhamnetin-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, 3,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid, and quercetin-3-O-(6′′-acetyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside, exhibited potent inhibitory effects on amylase.

Background: The Paulownia Clone in Vitro 112, known as oxytree or oxygen tree, is a hybrid clone of the species Paulownia elongata and Paulownia fortunei (Paulowniaceae). The oxytree is a fast-growing hybrid cultivar that can adapt to wide variations in edaphic and climate conditions. In this work, Paulownia Clone in Vitro 112 leaves were separated into an extract and four fractions (A–D) differing in chemical content in order to investigate their chemical content using LC-MS analysis. The extract and fractions were also evaluated for their anticoagulant and antioxidant properties in a human plasma in vitro. Results: The Paulownia leaf extract contained mainly phenolic compounds (e.g., verbascoside), small amounts of iridoids (e.g., aucubin or 7-hydroxytometoside) and triterpenoids (e.g., maslinic acid) were also detected. Our results indicate that the extract and fractions have different effects on oxidative stress in human plasma treated with H2O2/Fe in vitro, which could be attributed to differences in their chemical content. For example, the extract and all the fractions, at the two highest concentrations of 10 and 50 µg/mL, significantly inhibited the plasma lipid peroxidation induced by H2O2/Fe. Fractions C and D, at all tested concentrations (1–50 µg/mL) were also found to protect plasma proteins against H2O2/Fe-induced carbonylation. The positive effects of fraction C and D were dependent on the dose. Conclusions: The extract and all four fractions, but particularly fractions C and D, which are rich in phenolic compounds, are novel sources of antioxidants, with an inhibitory effect on oxidative stress in human plasma in vitro. Additionally, the antioxidant potential of fraction D may be associated with triterpenoids.

An acetone extract obtained from aerial parts of S. stricta Boiss. &amp; Heldr. apud Bentham, its fractions and phenolic compounds were investigated for their in vivo anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive activities. For the anti-inflammatory activity and for the antinociceptive activity assessment, carrageenan-induced hind paw edema and p-benzoquinone-induced abdominal constriction tests were used, respectively. The acetone extract of the plant and its phenolic fraction exhibited potent inhibitory activity against both bioassay models in mice. From the active phenolic fraction a well-known phenylethanoid glycoside, verbascoside (acteoside) (1), and two flavonoid glycosides, isoscutellarein 7-O-[6‴-O-acetyl-β-D-allopyranosyl-(1→2)]-β-D-glucopyranoside (2) and isoscutellarein 7-O-[6‴-O-acetyl-β-D-allopyranosyl-(1→2)]-6‴-O-acetyl-β-d-glucopyranoside (3), were isolated. During phytochemical studies we also isolated a methoxyflavone, xanthomicrol (4), from the non-polar fraction. The structures of the isolated compounds were established by spectroscopic evidence (UV, IR, 1D- and 2D-NMR, MS). Although antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities of the phenolic components were found not significant in the statistical analysis, compounds 1 to 3 showed a notable activity without inducing any apparent acute toxicity as well as gastric damage. The article analyzes the results on the content of peroxidase, phenolic compounds and ascorbic acid in the leaves of meadow bluegrass during the growing season under plantations of woody plants (scots pine and ash-leaved maple). The peroxidase activity in the leaves of plant samples was determined by the method of A.N. Boyarkin, the content of ascorbic acid - by the titrimetric method using sodium 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol, water-soluble phenolic compounds - by the Leventhal-Neubauer method. Mutual regulation of the plant antioxidant defense system was established, expressed in an increase in the level of ascorbic acid, but a decrease in the activity of peroxidase and phenolic compounds. The accumulation of metabolites in the studied plants varied depending on the phases of the growing season and growing conditions. Scots pine had the greatest inhibitory effect on the studied species than ash-leaved maple. The results obtained can be used to assess the state of the ground cover and the structure of the phytocenosis.
