Abstract Previous cross-sectional research suggests that age-related decreases in Rapid-Eye Movement (REM) sleep may contribute to poorer cognitive functioning (CF); however, few studies have examined the relationship at the intraindividual level by measuring habitual sleep over multiple days. Applying a 14-day daily diary design, the current study examines the dynamic relationship between REM sleep and CF in 69 healthy older adults (M age=70.8 years, SD=3.37; 73.9% female; 66.6% completed at least an undergraduate degree). A Fitbit device provided actigraphy indices of REM sleep (minutes and percentage of total sleep time), while CF was measured four times daily on a smartphone via ambulatory cognitive tests that captured processing speed and working memory. This research addressed the following questions: At the within-person level, are fluctuations in quantity of REM sleep associated with fluctuations in next day cognitive measures across days? Do individuals who spend more time in REM sleep on average, perform better on cognitive tests than adults who spend less time in REM sleep? A series of multilevel models were fit to examine the extent to which each index of sleep accounted for daily fluctuations in performance on next day cognitive tests. Results indicated that during nights when individuals had more REM sleep minutes than was typical, they performed better on the working memory task the next morning (estimate = -.003, SE = .002, p = .02). These results highlight the impact of REM sleep on CF, and further research may allow for targeted interventions for earlier treatment of sleep-related cognitive impairment.

Abstract Introduction Patients presenting with excessive sleepiness are frequently on antidepressant medication(s). While practice parameters recommend discontinuation of antidepressants prior to multiple sleep latency testing (MSLT), data examining the impact of tapering these medications on MSLT results are limited. Methods Adult patients who underwent MSLT at Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minnesota, between 2014-2018 were included. Clinical and demographic characteristics, medications, including use of rapid eye movement suppressing antidepressants (REMS-AD) at assessment and during testing, actigraphy and polysomnography data were manually abstracted. The difference in number of sleep-onset rapid eye movement periods (SOREMS), proportion with ≥2 SOREMS and mean sleep latency (MSL) in patients who were on REMS-AD and discontinued prior to testing versus those who remained on REMS-AD were examined. At our center, all antidepressants are discontinued 2 weeks prior to MSLT wherever feasible; fluoxetine is stopped 4 weeks prior. Regression analyses accounting for demographic, clinical and other medication-related confounders were performed. Results A total of 502 patients (age=38.18±15.90 years; 67% female) underwent MSLT; 178 (35%) were on REMS-AD at the time of assessment. REMS-AD were discontinued prior to testing in 121/178 (70%) patients. Patients tapered off REMS-AD were more likely to have ≥2 SOREMS (OR-12.20; 95%CI=1.60-92.94) compared to patients who remained on REMS-AD at the time of the MSLT. They also had shorter MSL (8.77±0.46 vs 10.21±0.28; p>0.009) and higher odds of having ≥2 SOREMS (OR=2.22; 95%CI=1.23-3.98) compared to patients not on REMS-AD at initial assessment. These differences persisted after regression analyses accounting for confounders. Conclusion Patients who taper off REMS-AD prior to MSLT are more likely to demonstrate ≥2SOREMs and have a shorter MSL. Pending further prospective investigations, clinicians should preferably withdraw REMs-AD before an MSLT. If this is not done, the test interpretation should include a statement regarding the potential effect of the drugs on the results. Support None

Ceramic product shape evaluation is an important part of product development, an important method to optimize product shape design, and is of great significance to reasonably locate users’ consumption psychology and promote the development of ceramic product industry. In this paper, we propose an eye-tracking-based evaluation method for ceramic products from the user’s point of view, in view of the fact that there are few studies on ceramic product shape evaluation, and it is mainly led by designers and enterprise leaders subjectively, with low user participation and lack of objective evaluation means and objective data support. In this paper, through the implementation of eye-movement experiments, we obtain and analyze the eye-movement data related to the semantic perception evaluation of product modeling and the overall evaluation of modeling, establish the mapping relationship between user evaluation and eye-movement data, and provide objective data support for modeling evaluation. This paper provides an objective data support for the styling evaluation. This paper provides new ideas for the ceramic product modeling evaluation method, which helps to promote the development of ceramic product industry, improve the brand recognition of enterprises, and help the marketing personnel to make reasonable marketing planning plans. For the semantic perceptual evaluation of ceramic product styling based on eye-tracking, the effectiveness of product styling design concept communication is evaluated. Ceramic products are constantly changing and developing, with new shapes appearing and old shapes being eliminated. Continual innovation and development of ceramics based on inherited traditions can give them a new look and color under the existing modeling style. Compared with other categories, although ceramic modeling has relatively abstract formal characteristics, but it is the extension of the modeling, still has obvious morphological characteristics, and the impact on people’s aesthetic mood.

Electromagnetic radiation (EMR) in the environment has increased sharply in recent decades. The effect of environmental EMR on living organisms remains poorly characterized. Here, we report the impact of wireless-range EMR on the sleep architecture of mouse. Prolonged exposure to 2.4-GHz EMR modulated by 100-Hz square pulses at a nonthermal output level results in markedly increased time of wakefulness in mice. These mice display corresponding decreased time of nonrapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM). In contrast, prolonged exposure to unmodulated 2.4-GHz EMR at the same time-averaged output level has little impact on mouse sleep. These observations identify alteration of sleep architecture in mice as a specific physiological response to prolonged wireless-range EMR exposure.
