The authors analyze patterns in international short student mobility, both between countries andover time, notonly by using various literature analyses but as well as interviews and panel discussions atHAN University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands and Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, Russia, to give this research an qualitative dimensionand underline how internationalization and what various factors are relevant to international short student mobility. This article presents an important contribution to this growing field of literatureby doing a comparative analysis about the factors which positively improve the international short students mobility. The three folded impact ofthis paper is obvious for the stakeholders involved: students, institutions and policy makers are responsible for the smooth cooperation and coordination for a better international mobility.

Magic and Science in the Nineteenth-century Culture of Spectacle: Henri Robin in the Low Countries. The theatre of modernity served to illuminate scientific insight and discovery in a spectacular way. Astronomy, physics, and experiments with electricity were at the heart of a popular genre that became known as ‘physiques amusantes’ (amusing physics). These shows occupied a middle ground between entertainment and science, between showing and doing. They were often staged by magicians, who presented themselves as ‘professors’ and awed audiences at local fairgrounds, world’s fairs, and popular theatres. One such figure was Henri Robin (1811–1974). Reviews and images dating from Robin’s time in Belgium and the Netherlands and his own memoirs of his time in Paris reveal that he found himself at the crossroads of a number of key developments. In particular, Robin’s theatre practices shed light on the changing nature of spectacle in the latter half of the nineteenth century. His shows succeeded in maintaining a precarious balance between spectacle-driven entertainment and scientific learning, between visually-oriented fairground amusement for the masses and educational fare for the new bourgeoisie. This article will discuss the complex relationship between aesthetic and didactic concerns in Henri Robin’s theatre shows, their remarkable blend of science and magic, and their effect on audiences. At the same time, we will demonstrate that the spectacle of modernity in the Low Countries resulted in part from the international mobility of showmen such as Robin.

AbstractReflecting from a European perspective upon the shift of the centre of gravity of Christianity to the global South, the author explores the implications of this shift for intercultural communication and hermeneutics within world Christianity. Are North-South relationships within world Christianity simply to be reversed, and does European Christianity end up exclusively at the receiving end? Discussing his studies of Christian immigrants in The Netherlands, the author states that the struggle between Western and non-Western Christians is a struggle about the values of modernity. This is shown in de debates about abortion, single sex marriages and euthanasia. The author holds that European theologians cannot simply return to pre-modern values, stick to modern universalism or be satisfied with post-modern relativity. They must develop further a trans-modern hermeneutic.

AbstractThroughout the world, particularly in the Global South, state authorities expropriate property rights without following a fair, transparent, and participatory procedure. The Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure provide good governance standards for expropriation procedures that are the results of in-depth world-wide consultations with all stakeholders. Not only countries in the Global South, however, but also countries in Global North are meant to observe the Guidelines. Whether or not expropriation procedures in Germany and the Netherlands are ready for the Guidelines is the topic of this contribution. The Guidelines contain several recommendations for fair, transparent, and participatory expropriation procedures. The state should empower affected persons to participate. Information about the procedure and the subject-matter should be widely disseminated. Participation should take the form of deliberations at a point in time when affected persons can still influence the decision to expropriate property. Obligations to balance all involved interests and to furnish reasons should also form part of a good expropriation procedure. German and Dutch law mostly comply with these Guidelines. However, these systems do not seem to empower participants sufficiently, and do not show a sufficient commitment to deliberations among participants and between participants and the authority. Also, German law does not inform holders of contractual use rights as well as it informs holders of registered property rights.
