               Our research team is concerned with potential reptile and amphibian road mortality through Little Cataraqui Creek wetland along Front Rd. and Bath Rd. in Kingston, Ontario. The coastal marsh is a provincially significant wetland that supports species of migrating and breeding waterfowl, wetland dependent reptiles and amphibians, and may support some of Ontario’s threatened turtle species. The coastal wetland also provides a protected nesting area for a migrating species within Lake Ontario. Specific species of turtles, salamanders and frogs will be investigated.  Our team will identify general breeding, nesting and migratory behavior patterns of associated wetland species, and establish potential indirect effects on the wetland ecosystem due to population decline. Traffic volume and speed limits of Front Rd. and Bath Rd. at Little Cataraqui Creek Wetland will be identified, and any current wildlife crossing systems in place will be evaluated. Based on this research, our team will establish the significance of wildlife road mortality within Little Cataraqui Creek Wetland at Front Rd. and Bath Rd., and propose suitable mitigation techniques. These techniques may include implementing structural design solutions such as road barriers, culverts, etc., as well as increasing public awareness of wildlife crossing on Bath Rd. and Front Rd. by proposing appropriate traffic laws in the area. Themes include wetland species breeding and nesting behavior, and urban/traffic development issues surrounding wetland ecosystems.

<p><strong> </strong>Anaikatty Hills of the Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu witness the annual spectacle of mass movement of lakhs of butterflies.  The present paper examines the impact of vehicular traffic on this ‘butterfly migration’ through a survey of butterfly mortality along a road stretch in Anaikatty Hills.  A high rate of mortality due to road traffic was observed during the mass movement of butterflies.  One-hundred-and-thirty-five butterfly road kills belonging to three families, nine genera and 12 species were recorded during the study.  The proportion of nymphalid butterflies among the road kills (70%) was very high compared to their respective share in the background population (39%), indicating a higher road mortality risk for nymphalids.  The conservation significance of the road traffic impact on butterfly assemblage and management options are discussed.</p><div> </div>

Abstract Annually, millions of snakes are killed on roads in the United States. Because of their potential abundance and ease of collection, many researchers have used road-killed snakes to examine community composition, movement patterns, and population dynamics. However, few previous studies have accounted for snake carcasses that are removed from roads by scavengers. Snake carcasses were placed at randomly selected locations along 2 km of road, one traversing maritime forest and the other surrounded by dune habitat. Carcasses in forested habitat were removed more often (100% vs 40%) and more quickly (8 hr vs 11 hr) than those placed in dune habitat. Half of the carcasses (50%) were removed within eight hours of placement and all carcasses were removed at night. Species and size of carcasses did not affect removal time. Removal time and scavenging intensity of snake carcasses most likely varies across regions and habitats. Furthermore, because scavenging appears to occur quickly and to such a significant extent, it may confound results of studies examining patterns of road-mortality. Thus, investigators that use data from road-killed snakes would benefit from a concurrent investigation of scavenging and application of appropriate correction factors to avoid underestimation of snake mortality.

Road mortality poses a major threat to turtle populations. Several studies have suggested that the terrestrial movements associated with nesting increase this risk for females. The Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre (OTCC) is home to the Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre, which admits 900 or more turtles a year, with road injuries the primary cause of admission. We tested the hypothesis that road mortality in turtles is female-biased using data from injured Midland Painted Turtles (Chrysemys picta marginata), Snapping Turtles (Chelydra serpentina), Blanding’s Turtles (Emydoidea blandingii), and Northern Map Turtles (Graptemys geographica) collected over about 126 000 km2 and admitted to OTCC’s hospital from January 2013 to October 2017. There was no difference in the number of male and female admissions of Midland Painted, Blanding’s, or Snapping Turtles (P > 0.05); however, more female Northern Map Turtles than males were admitted (P < 0.001). Admission of female turtles peaked in June during the nesting season, but male admissions were more evenly distributed throughout the season. Our admissions data provide a temporally unbiased and geographically broad snapshot of turtle–vehicle interactions that can directly inform conservation and management policies. Although our data are not equivalent to mortality rates, these results demonstrate that vehicle strikes can have a substantial impact on both female and male turtles.
