Abstract The interface between silicone oil and saline layers in a 3D model of the eye chamber was studied under different eye-like saccadic motions in order to determine the stability of the interface and propensity for emulsification in the bulk. The effect of level of fill; saccade amplitude, angular velocity, latency time; and orientation were investigated experimentally in spherical flasks with internal diameters 10, 28 and 40 mm, as well as a 28 mm diameter flask with an indent replicating the lens or the presence of a buckle. The deformation of the interface was quantified in terms of the change in its length in 2-D images. The deformation increased with Weber number, We, and was roughly proportional to We for We > 1. The presence of the lens gave rise to higher deformation near this feature. In both cases emulsification was not observed in either bulk fluid. The velocity profile in the spherical configuration was mapped using particle imaging velocimetry and is compared with an analytical solution and a short computational fluid dynamics simulation study. These confirm that the saccadic motion induces flow near the wall in the saline layer and significantly further into the chamber in the silicone oil. Surfactants soluble in the aqueous and oil phases reduced the interfacial tension, increasing deformation but did not lead to emulsification in the bulk.

The influence of a commonly used antibacterial mouth rinse, Listerine, on the corrosion behavior of one of the commonly used titanium alloys Ti6Al4V (two-phase structure, i.e.,αandβ) and a newer Ti15Mo (singleβphase) in normal saline solution has been investigated using electrochemical techniques. Interfacial electrochemical changes occurring at the oxide-solution interface have been analysed using EIS circuit modeling. Listerine acts as a corrosion inhibitor for Ti15Mo alloy and a corrosion promoter for Ti6Al4V alloy.

The influence of small variations in the composition on the corrosion behavior of Co-Cr-Mo alloys has been studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray analysis (EDX), and electrochemical measurements. SEM and EDX data were correlated with data from in vitro corrosion measurements involving repassivation and also potentiostatic anodic polarization measurements. Specimens studied included the four alloys shown in Table 1. Corrosion tests were conducted in Hanks' physiological saline solution which has a pH of 7.4 and was held at a temperature of 37°C. Specimens were mechanically polished to a surface finish with 0.05 µm A1203, then exposed to the solution and anodically polarized at a rate of 0.006 v/min. All voltages were measured vs. the saturated calomel electrode (s.c.e.).. Specimens had breakdown potentials near 0.47V vs. s.c.e.

Although erythrophagocytosis by various species of Entamoeba is a well known phenomenon this has not yet been studied in detail at the ultrastructural level. The present work deals with the description of the incorporation process of erythrocytes by trophozoites of E. histolytica. For this study, trophozoites of E. histolytica, HK-9:NIH strain cultured in axenic conditions and washed human erythrocytes were placed on a hot plate at 37°C in physiological saline solution. After 5 minutes, 2.5% glutarldehyde was added and the samples were processed according to conventional techniques for electron microscopy.Based upon light microscopy studies on living trophozoites in contact with erythrocytes, it seems that erythrophagocytosis only takes place in one pole of the parasite.

Recent work on the crystallisation of inorganic crystals under compressed monomolecular surfactant films has shown that two dimensional templates can be used to promote the oriented nucleation of solids. When a suitable long alkyl chain surfactant is cast on the crystallisation media a monodispersied population of crystals forms exclusively at the monolayer/solution interface. Each crystal is aligned with a specific crystallographic axis perpendicular to the plane of the monolayer suggesting that nucleation is facilitated by recognition events between the nascent inorganic solid and the organic template.For example, monolayers of the long alkyl chain surfactant, stearic acid will promote the oriented nucleation of the calcium carbonate polymorph, calcite, on the (100) face, whereas compressed monolayers of n-eicosyl sulphate will induce calcite nucleation on the (001) face, (Figure 1 & 2). An extensive program of research has confirmed the general principle that molecular recognition events at the interface (including electrostatic interactions, geometric homology, stereochemical complementarity) can be used to promote the crystal engineering process.
