Based on a large repertoire of chromosomal rearrangement operations, the genomic distance d between two genomes with χr and χb linear chromosomes, respectively, both containing the same (or orthologous) n genes or markers, is d = n + max (χr,χb) - c, where c is the number of cycles in the breakpoint graph of the two genomes. We consider and analyze general methodological issues regarding the strength and endurance (life-time) of the materials and structure elements under a combined effect of various force, deformation and temperature factors. The Journal "Zavodskaya laboratoriya. Diagnostika materialov" (Industrial laboratory. Diagnostics of materials) has launched systematic publications on this problematic since 2018. For many decades, domestic and foreign laboratory studies have gleaned to a traditional methodology for obtaining initial curves of the long-term and cyclic strength that related the breaking stresses with time or number of cycles. These curves, with the characteristic sections and break points, separating the areas of elastic and inelastic (plastic strain or creep strain) strain, are used in analysis of long-term and cyclic damage. Using the elementary linear law of damage summation, it is possible to calculate at a first approximation the strength and endurance under varying conditions of loading. Stepping up the requirements to the accuracy of calculations necessitates a transition from force fracture criteria (at stresses a) to deformation criteria (in elastic and inelastic deformations e). Thus, it becomes possible to construct and use a unified expression for the curve of the long-term cyclic fracture (taking into account the temporal x and cyclic N factors) and a long-term cyclic damage. With such approach it is possible to remain the linear law of damage summation though those damages are obviously nonlinear. The goal of the study is to continue and support the discussion of the most complex problems of a comprehensive assessment of the strength, resource, survivability and safety of high-risk engineering equipment within the journal pages.

The present article aimed to test changes in cooling water temperatures of males, present in aluminum injection molds, to reduce failures due to thermal fatigue. In order to carry out this work, cooling systems were studied, including their geometries, thermal gradients and the expected theoretical durability in relation to fatigue failure. The cooling system tests were developed with the aid of simulations in the ANSYS software and with fatigue calculations, using the method of Goodman. The study of the cooling system included its geometries, flow and temperature of this fluid. The results pointed to a significant increase in fatigue life of the mold component for the thermal conditions that were proposed, with a significant increase in the number of cycles, to happen failures due to thermal fatigue.

With the use of regression and dispersion analyzes conducted in this study it was possible to identify predictive factors that significantly worsen the prognosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma in adolescents however constructed regression equations did not pass the quality assessment of the models, which did not allow them to be used for the construction of point and interval predictions. In a cohort of patients enrolled in the study a risk-adapted treatment program based on the risk group for stratification was conducted. Negative aspects of the results of our study could be related to the already selected volume of the program for these patients. In turn our analysis proves the validity of the selection of therapeutic loads (a number of cycles of polychemotherapy, doses of radiation therapy) depending on the risk group, into which the adolescent is stratified.

Reciprocating sliding wear test of uncoated titanium alloy, Ti-6Al-4V is investigated using pin-on-flat contact arrangement of Ti-6Al-4V/Ti-6Al-4V pair under variable number of cycles at low number of cycles. The worn surfaces of the titanium alloy specimens were analyzed with the use of optical microscope (2D and 3D OM) and Vickers Hardness analysis was carried on. The pattern of the wear scar characteristics determined and the finding at the end of wear track had been focus through the presence at the end of wear track. It is suggesting an evidence of plastic deformation with the increasing in hardness value. The increase in hardness value at the end of wear track indicates increase in the plastic deformation with increasing number of cycles.

Background. Mucositis is an adverse effect of chemotherapy (QT) and/or radiotherapy (RT). The purpose of this study was to investigate the occurrence of oral mucositis in children undergoing cancer treatment. Methods. Fifty-one children with cancer who had received QT, RT, or both (QT-RT) underwent clinical evaluations; World Health Organization criteria were used to establish the degree and severity of mucositis. The correlations between the clinical data, type of cancer, and therapy were statistically analysed. Results. Mucositis was present in 88.23% of the patients; 57.78%, 7.78%, and 24.44% received QT, RT, and QT-RT, respectively. Severity scores of 1 and 2 were the most common; scores of 3-4 were observed in patients who received QT-RT or more than 7 treatment cycles. There was a significant association between mucositis, the type of treatment, and the number of cycles received (p<0.05). Conclusion. It is important to implement therapeutic protocols that help maintain excellent oral health and reduce the risk of oral mucositis. Stomatologists should be consulted to assess patients’ oral cavities and provide preventive treatment prior to QT and/or RT administration. It is important to integrate a stomatologist into the oncological working group to focus on preventing and managing oral mucositis.

Normal oral food ingestion processes such as mastication would not have been possible without the teeth. The human teeth are subjected to many cyclic loadings per day. This, in turn, exerts forces on the teeth just like an engineering material undergoing the same cyclic loading. Over a period, there will be the creation of microcracks on the teeth that might not be visible ab initio. The constant formation of these microcracks weakens the teeth structure and foundation that result in its fracture. Therefore, the need to predict the fatigue life for human teeth is essential. In this paper, a continuum damage mechanics (CDM) based model is employed to evaluate the fatigue life of the human teeth. The material characteristic of the teeth is captured within the framework of the elastoplastic model. By applying the damage evolution equivalence, a mathematical formula is developed that describes the fatigue life in terms of the stress amplitude. Existing experimental data served as a guide as to the completeness of the proposed model. Results as a function of age and tubule orientation are presented. The outcomes produced by the current study have substantial agreement with the experimental results when plotted on the same axes. There is a notable difference in the number of cycles to failure as the tubule orientation increases. It is also revealed that the developed model could forecast for any tubule orientation and be adopted for both young and old teeth.

AbstractFatigue tests were carried out on compression mouldings supplied by a leading polymer manufacturer. They were made from three batches of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) with weight-average relative molar masses, ${\overline{M}}_{\mathrm{W}}$, of about 0.6 × 106, 5 × 106 and 9 × 106. In 10 mm thick compact tension specimens, crack propagation was so erratic that it was impossible to follow standard procedure, where crack-tip stress intensity amplitude, ΔK, is raised incrementally, and the resulting crack propagation rate, da/dN, increases, following the Paris equation, where a is crack length and N is number of cycles. Instead, most of the tests were conducted at fixed high values of ΔK. Typically, da/dN then started at a high level, but decreased irregularly during the test. Micrographs of fracture surfaces showed that crack propagation was sporadic in these specimens. In one test, at ΔK = 2.3 MPa m0.5, there were crack-arrest marks at intervals Δa of about 2 μm, while the number of cycles between individual growth steps increased from 1 to more than 1000 and the fracture surface showed increasing evidence of plastic deformation. It is concluded that sporadic crack propagation was caused by energy-dissipating crazing, which was initiated close to the crack tip under plane strain conditions in mouldings that were not fully consolidated. By contrast, fatigue crack propagation in 4 mm thick specimens followed the Paris equation approximately. The results from all four reports on this project are reviewed, and the possibility of using fatigue testing as a quality assurance procedure for melt-processed UHMWPE is discussed.

The Relationship

Considering the relationship between inhomogeneous plastic deformation and fatigue damage, deformation inhomogeneity evolution and fatigue failure of superalloy GH4169 under temperature 500 °C and macro tension compression cyclic loading are studied, by using crystal plasticity calculation associated with polycrystalline representative Voronoi volume element (RVE). Different statistical standard deviation and differential entropy of meso strain are used to measure the inhomogeneity of deformation, and the relationship between the inhomogeneity and strain cycle is explored by cyclic numerical simulation. It is found from the research that the standard deviations of each component of the strain tensor at the cyclic peak increase monotonically with the cyclic loading, and they are similar to each other. The differential entropy of each component of the strain tensor also increases with the number of cycles, and the law is similar. On this basis, the critical values determined by statistical standard deviations of the strain components and the equivalent strain, and that by differential entropy of strain components, are, respectively, used as fatigue criteria, then predict the fatigue–life curves of the material. The predictions are verified with reference to the measured results, and their deviations are proved to be in a reasonable range.
