Abstract In recent years, ammonia leakage accidents occur frequently, which causes a great concern in China. Based on traditional risk analysis methods and the equipment characteristics, a risk evaluation method for small ammonia refrigeration units is proposed. The method includes a risk assessment model based on area division, a failure probability assessment method based on expert scoring system, a failure consequence assessment method based on regional population density and consequence mitigation measures, and a HAZOP risk correction method. Based on the proposed method, a risk assessment system of small ammonia refrigeration units is developed. This risk assessment method and system will provide a scientific basis to carry out the cold storage management in China.

High distributed generation (DG) penetration makes the traditional method of equalizing the distribution power system (DPS) to the PQ load bus in the risk assessment of the transmission power system (TPS) no longer applicable. This paper proposes a risk assessment method for an integrated transmission–distribution system that considers the reactive power regulation capability of the DGs. Based on the DG’s characteristics and network constraints, the regulation capacity is mapped to the boundary buses of the distribution networks. Coordinating the relationship between reactive power and active power, the utilization of the regulation capacity is maximized to reduce the load shedding in the fault analysis of the TPS. Simulation results in the integrated transmission–distribution system illustrate that the effective use of the regulation capacity of the DPS can reduce the risk of the TPS. The method can be applied to the reactive power sources planning and dispatching of power system.

A set of blackout risk assessment indexes is established according to Electricity Accident (Incident) Investigation Procedures of China Southern Power Grid (CSPG) (pilot) and Guide on Operational Risk Evaluation of CSPG, which can calculate risk values of electricity accidents (incidents). The calculation process is discussed in detail. Based on the proposed indexes and OPA blackout model, a blackout risk assessment method for power system is put forward, with which blackout risk for all 500kV buses in Guangdong Power Grid are evaluated. Weak areas in power system are identified and their inducements are analyzed. The identification results accord with actual system long-term operation experience, which verifies the correctness of the indexes and method.

The synthetic risk assessment method incorporating the severity and the possibility is used to identify the catastrophic event sequences in power system. The weight setting of each severity index is determined by the proposed entropy weight method. Comparing with traditional methods, the entropy weight method can determine the weight coefficients objectively. The simulation results for the WSCC-9 buses system have proved the validity of the proposed method. This method can be used in the practice power system.
