Through rigorous electromagnetic simulations, the natural coupling of high-spatial-frequency evanescent waves from the near field to the far field by dielectric microspheres is studied in air. The generation of whispering gallery modes inside the microspheres is shown independently of any resonance. In addition, the conversion mechanism of these evanescent waves into propagating waves is analysed. This latter point leads to key information that allows a better physical understanding of the super-resolution phenomenon in microsphere-assisted microscopy where sub-diffraction-limit revolving power is achieved.

AbstractWe used a low temperature near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) to study a formation of Wigner molecules (WMs) in the emission spectra of self-organized InP/GaInP QDs having up to seven electrons. We used a Schottky diode structure for the electrostatic control of the number of the electrons ( N ) in QD, and we observed the emission of the charged excitons (for N < 3) and of the WMs (for N > 2) in the regime of weak Wigner localization. We show, that a contribution of whispering gallery modes (WGMs) of the electrons and rearrangement of the electrons between the WM and WGM states in the QDs, can explain the anomalous dependence of NSOM image size on the quantum confinement observed for some dots.

Evanescent radiation-molecule interactions in an optical microcavity device are characterized. The device is operated at whispering-gallery modes, and consists of a microcavity and a micro-waveguide coupled by a sub-micrometer air-gap. Under optical resonance, a strong evanescent field arises along the periphery of the circular resonating microcavity. This radiation will certainly interact with molecules inside the field and may induce changes in the resonant field. Such induced changes are investigated and its potential in the detection of single molecules is discussed.
