This paper presents a comprehensive study on a novel voltage injection based offline parameter identification method for surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors (SPMSMs). It gives solutions to obtain stator resistance, d- and q-axes inductances, and permanent magnet (PM) flux linkage that are totally independent of current and speed controllers, and it is able to track variations in q-axis inductance caused by magnetic saturation. With the proposed voltage amplitude selection strategies, a closed-loop-like current and speed control is achieved throughout the identification process. It provides a marked difference compared with the existing methods that are based on open-loop voltage injection and renders a more simplified and industry-friendly solution compared with methods that rely on controllers. Inverter nonlinearity effect compensation is not required because its voltage error is removed by enabling the motor to function at a designed routine. The proposed method is validated through two SPMSMs with different power rates. It shows that the required parameters can be accurately identified and the proportional-integral current controller auto-tuning is achieved only with very limited motor data such as rated current and number of pole pairs.

This paper concerns the parameter tuning and the estimated results postprocessing of the extended Kalman filter for the sensorless control application of permanent magnet synchronous motors. At first an extended Kalman filter parameter tuning method is proposed based on the theoretical and simulation analysis of extended Kalman filter parameters. Furthermore, a sensorless control system is proposed based on the parameter tuning method and the simulation analysis of extended Kalman filter estimation results in different reference speeds and different load torques. The proposed sensorless control system consists of two parts. The first one is a module to self-regulate extended Kalman filter parameters. The second part can correct the estimated speed and the estimated rotation angle based on the reference speed and the electromagnetic torque. Finally, simulation results are presented to verify the feasibility and validity of the proposed sensorless control system.

The calculation accuracy of unbalanced magnetic forces (UMF) is very important to the design of rotor length, because it will effect the shaft deflection. But in some permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) with fractional slot concentrated windings (FSCW), the UMF caused by asymmetrical stator topology structure is not considered in the existing deflection calculation, which is very fatal for the operational reliability, especially for the PMSMs with the large length-diameter ratio, such as submersible PMSMs. Therefore, the part of UMF in the asymmetrical stator topology structure PMSMs caused by the choice of pole-slot combinations is analysized in this paper, and a more accurate rotor deflection calculation method is also proposed.
