The U. S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) is investigating compact, energy-dense electronic components to realize high-power, vehicle-mounted survivability and lethality systems. These applications require switching components that are low in weight and volume, exhibit reliable performance, and are easy to integrate into the vehicles' systems. The devices reported here are 4 mm × 4 mm silicon carbide GTOs rated for 3000 V blocking. These devices were packaged at ARL for high pulse current capability, high voltage protection, and minimum package inductance. The GTOs were switched in a 1-ms half-sine, single-pulse discharge circuit to determine reliable peak current and recovery time (or Tq). The GTOs were repeatedly switched over 300 A peak (3.3 A/cm2 and an action of 60 A2s) with a recovery time of 20 µs. The switches were also evaluated for dV/dt immunity up to an instantaneous slope of 3 kV/ µs.

The effects of pulse current on the tensile properties of high temperature titanium alloy Ti55 were investigated by pulse current assisted uniaxial tensile test under different electrical parameters. It was found that with the increase of peak current and pulse width, the tensile properties of Ti55 are significantly improved. At the same time, the pulsation effect of current on the mechanical properties of Ti55 was investigated. The results show that the tensile displacement of low pulsation group was higher, while the elongation of high pulsation group was higher. In order to explore the mechanism of pulsation effect of current, EBSD was adopted. The results indicated that high pulse current can significantly promote the dislocation movement and recrystallization. In addition, some macrozones was found in low pulsation group, which indicated that high pulsation current was more suitable for material forming than low pulsation current.

Abstract LEDs operating under high pulsed current are of a great interest for different applications, in particular, for VLC (LiFi) systems and laser pumping. Current dependences of the efficiency and emission spectra as well as the rise and fall times of high-power blue LEDs were investigated under extremely high pulse current density up to 7 kA/cm2 and pulse duration from 100 ns to 3 μs. Analysis of the pulse behaviour of the LEDs reveals that the main droop in the efficiency and change in spectra occur up to the current densities ~ 1 kA/cm2 and seems to be non-thermal.

In this study, effects of high pulse current (current density :>103 A/cm2, applied time: 15 s) on microstructure of magnesium alloys were investigated. A mild steel was also employed as comparison material. Refinement of microstructure by electropulsing was observed in Mg-3B2O3 and mild steel and micro-Vickers hardness of these alloys were increased by modification of microstructure.
