Purpose The use of real-time recording technology for clinical instruction allows student clinicians to more easily collect data, self-reflect, and move toward independence as supervisors continue to provide continuation of supportive methods. This article discusses how the use of high-definition real-time recording, Bluetooth technology, and embedded annotation may enhance the supervisory process. It also reports results of graduate students' perception of the benefits and satisfaction with the types of technology used. Method Survey data were collected from graduate students about their use and perceived benefits of advanced technology to support supervision during their 1st clinical experience. Results Survey results indicate that students found the use of their video recordings useful for self-evaluation, data collection, and therapy preparation. The students also perceived an increase in self-confidence through the use of the Bluetooth headsets as their supervisors could provide guidance and encouragement without interrupting the flow of their therapy sessions by entering the room to redirect them. Conclusions The use of video recording technology can provide opportunities for students to review: videos of prospective clients they will be treating, their treatment videos for self-assessment purposes, and for additional data collection. Bluetooth technology provides immediate communication between the clinical educator and the student. Students reported that the result of that communication can improve their self-confidence, perceived performance, and subsequent shift toward independence.

Abstract The idiodynamic method is a relatively new mixed-method approach to studying in real time the complex dynamics of integrated affective and cognitive states that interact continuously with human communication. The method requires video recording a sample of communication from a research participant and then using specialized software to play the video back while collecting contemporaneous self-reported ratings (approximately one per second) on one or more focal variables of interest to the researcher, such as willingness to communicate (WTC) or communication anxiety (CA). After the participant rates the communication sample, a continuous graph of changes in the focal variable is printed. The final step is to interview the speaker to gather an explanation for changes in the ratings, for example at peaks or valleys in the graph. The method can also collect observer ratings that can then be compared with the speaker’s self-ratings. To date, studies have been conducted examining WTC, CA, motivation, perceived competence, teacher self-efficacy, teacher empathy, and strategy use, among other topics. The strengths and limitations of the method will be discussed and a specific example of its use in measuring WTC and CA will be provided.

Db/db mouse, which lacks functional leptin receptor, is an extensively used model of obesity and type 2 diabetes. We and others have demonstrated that db/db mouse has disruptions in circadian rhythms of behavior, physiology and some clock genes. However, systemic investigations of the alterations in clock gene oscillations in multiple systems with high time resolution in this model are impeded by the impractical demand for large number of animals. To overcome this limitation, we cross bred the db/db mouse with mPer2 Luc mouse in which the clock gene Period2 is fused with a luciferase reporter thus allow real-time monitoring of the clock gene Per2 oscillations. The generated db/db-mPer2 Luc mice had the typical diabetic mellitus including obesity, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, glucose intolerance and insulin resistance. In addition, the db/db-mPer2 Luc mice also exhibited disruptions in circadian rhythms in behavior (locomotor activity), physiology (blood pressure) and metabolism (respiratory exchange ratio and energy expenditure). Using the LumiCycle system, we monitored in real-time of the Per2 oscillations in both the SCN central clock and multiple peripheral tissues ex vivo . The results showed no difference in the phase of the central SCN Per2 oscillation. However, the peripheral tissues that related to metabolism, such as liver and white adipose clocks, displayed 3.28±0.86 and 4.64±1.06 hours of phase advance respectively. Aorta, mesentery artery and kidney, organs play important role in blood pressure homeostasis, showed 0.99±0.37, and 2.12±0.4, and 2.21±0.5 hours phase advance respectively. Interestingly, no difference was observed in the lung and adrenal gland. We then investigated the Per2 oscillation in vivo by using the IVIS imaging system. Consistent with the ex vivo results, the liver Per2 oscillation were phase advanced in vivo. Our findings demonstrated that clock gene Per2 oscillations were disrupted in multiple peripheral tissues but not in central SCN. Moreover, the extent of phase advance in peripheral tissue varies largely. Our results suggest dyssynchrony of the clock oscillations among various peripheral systems likely contribute to the multiple disruptions in physiology and metabolism in diabetic db/db mice.

The accuracy of written documentation was compared with video gold standard.ResultsTiming of initial heart rate assessment agreed with video in 44/50 (88%) records; the documented heart rate was correct in 34/44 (77%) of these. Heart rate and oxygen saturation were documented at 5 min of life in 90% of resuscitations. Of these, 100% of heart rate and 93% of oxygen saturation values were correctly recorded. Written records accurately reflected the mode(s) of respiratory support for 89%–100%, procedures for 91%–100% and medications for 100% of events.ConclusionReal-time documentation correctly reflects interventions performed during delivery room resuscitation but is less accurate for early vital sign assessments.

An innovative application of time-lapse video recording is used to assist in an evaluation of a highway safety improvement. The improvement is an icy-curve warning system near Fredonyer Summit in northern California that activates real-time motorist warnings via extinguishable message signs, based on weather readings collected from road weather information systems. A measure of effectiveness is whether motorist speed is reduced as a result of real-time warnings to drivers. Why indirect speed measurement with video was preferred over radar for this case is discussed, as is how specific methodological issues related to the custom-built equipment, including camera location and orientation, distance benchmarking, and data collection and reduction. Theoretical and empirical accuracy measurements show that the video surveillance trailers yield results comparable to radar and, hence, would be applicable for studies in which speed change is measured. Because this particular technology had not been used previously, several lessons are documented that may help determine where and how similar equipment may be optimally used in future studies.
