Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are increasingly used in high performance variable speed drives of many industrial applications. PMSM has many features, like high efficiency, compactness, high torque to inertia ratio, rapid dynamic response, simple modeling and control, and maintenance free operation. Presence of position sensors presents several disadvantages, such as reduced reliability, susceptibility to noise, additional cost and weight and increased complexity of the drive system. For these reasons, the development of alternative indirect methods for speed and position control becomes an important research topic. Advantages of sensorless control are reduced hardware complexity, low cost, reduced size, cable elimination, increased noise immunity, increased reliability and decreased maintenance. The key problem in sensorless vector control of ac drives is the accurate dynamic estimation of the stator flux vector over a wide speed range using only terminal variables (currents and voltages). The difficulty comprises state estimation at very low speeds where the fundamental excitation is low and the observer performance tends to be poor. Moreover, the noises of system and measurements are considered other main problems. This paper presents a comprehensive study of the different sliding mode observer methods of speed and position estimations for sensorless control of PMSM drives.

To more efficiently design high performance vehicular permanent magnet motor, an electromagnetic-thermal integration design method is presented, which considers both the electromagnetic properties and the temperature rise of motor winding when determining the main dimensional parameters of the motor. Then a 48-slot and 8-pole vehicular permanent magnet motor is designed with this method. The thermomagnetic coupling design is simulated and validated on the basis of multiphysical domain on finite element analysis. Then the prototype is analyzed and tested on a newly built motor experiment platform. It is shown that the simulation results and experimental results are consistent, which validate the accuracy and effectiveness of the new design method. Also this method is proved to well improve the efficiency of permanent magnet motor design.

In order to meet the development demands for high-speed and high-precision of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine tools, the equipped CNC systems begin to employ the technical route of software hardening. Making full use of the advanced performance of Large Scale Integrated Circuits (LSIC), this paper puts forward using Field Programmable Gates Array (FPGA) for the functional modules of CNC system, which is called Intelligent Software Hardening Chip (ISHC). The CNC system architecture with high performance is constructed based on the open system thought and ISHCs. The corresponding programs can be designed with Very high speed integrate circuit Hardware Description Language (VHDL) and downloaded into the FPGA. These hardening modules, including the arithmetic module, contour interpolation module, position control module and so on, demonstrate that the proposed schemes are reasonable and feasibility.

High-speed permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is more and more widely applied in high precision processing and high-performance machines. It is very important to research practical control strategy for the stability operation of the high-speed PMSM. The strategy of sensorless grey prediction fuzzy direct torque control (DTC) is proposed which is suitable for high-speed PMSM control system. The method of prediction fuzzy control based on DTC is used to gain the flux, torque and flux oriented angle through the prediction model of the motor parameters. The best control scheme is gained by fuzzy reasoning to overcome the lag on the system making the adjustment process stable and realizing accurate predictive control. Thereby, the dynamic response of the system, anti-disturbance capability and control accuracy can be improved.

Abstract Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines (PMSMs) have been preferred for high-performance applications due to their high torque density, high power density, high control accuracy, and high efficiency over a wide operating range. During operation, monitoring the PMSM’s health condition is crucial for detecting any anomalies so that performance degradation, maintenance/downtime costs, and safety hazards can be avoided. In particular, demagnetization of PMSMs can lead to not only degraded performance but also high maintenance cost as they are the most expensive components in a PMSM. In this paper, an equivalent two-phase model for surface-mount permanent magnet (SMPM) machines under permanent magnet demagnetization is formulated and a parameter estimator is proposed for condition monitoring purposes. The performance of the proposed estimator is investigated through analysis and simulation under different conditions, and compared with a parameter estimator based on the standard SMPM machine model. In terms of information that can be extracted for fault diagnosis and condition monitoring, the proposed estimator exhibits advantages over the standard-model-based estimator as it can differentiate between uniform demagnetization over all poles and asymmetric demagnetization between north and south poles.
