This paper reports recent results from an ongoing effort to develop an implantable accelerometer-based heart-monitoring device for ischemia monitoring. The latest device prototype utilizes a new and more compact accelerometer (1.2 × 1.5 × 0.8 mm3), a prototype device from Bosch SensorTec, Reutlingen, Germany. This paper presents the fabrication and testing of the device, including an explorative study of the effect of the capsule shape on the stability of the implanted device in the heart tissue. The stability study indicated sufficient stability of the device and a higher resistance to retraction for one of the capsule designs. The device was able to carry out acceleration monitoring and it meets the leakage current requirements of the IEC60601 standard.

An improved design for a combination Scanning Tunnelling Microscope/TEM specimen holder is presented. It is based on earlier versions which have been used to test the usefulness of such a device. As with the earlier versions, this holder is meant to replace the standard double-tilt specimen holder of an unmodified Philips 400T TEM. It allows the sample to be imaged simultaneously by both the STM and the TEM when the TEM is operated in the reflection mode (see figure 1).The resolution of a STM is determined by its tip radii as well as its stability. This places strict limitations on the mechanical stability of the tip with respect to the sample. In this STM the piezoelectric tube scanner is rigidly mounted inside the endcap of the STM holder. The tip coarse approach to the sample (z-direction) is provided by an Inchworm which is located outside the TEM vacuum.

ABSTRACT This paper presents an evaluation study of the feasibility of harvesting energy from rolling tire deformation and using it to supply a tire monitoring device installed within the tire cavity. The developed technique is simulated by using a flexible piezoelectric fiber composite transducer (PFC) adhered onto the tire inner liner acting as the energy harvesting element for tire monitoring systems. The PFC element generates electric charge when strain is applied to it. Tire cyclic deformation, particularly at the contact patch surface due to rolling conditions, can be exploited to harvest energy. Finite element simulations, using Abaqus package, were employed to estimate the available strain energy within the tire structure in order to select the optimum location for the PFC element. Experimental tests were carried out by using an evaluation kit for the energy harvesting element installed within the tire cavity to examine the PFC performance under controlled speed and loading conditions.
