The Z-scan technique was employed to explore the third-order nonlinear optical properties of disperse red 13 organic chromophore solutions in tetrahydrofuran. A continuous-wave He–Ne laser (632.8 nm) was used as a source of irradiation. The nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refractive index coefficients of this dye were investigated. The results showed that this dye has a good nonlinear response with its real and imaginary quantities of third-order susceptibility. The solutions showed negative nonlinear refraction. The best obtained value of the third-order susceptibility was 6.37 × 10–3 esu at a dye concentration of 3.15 × 10–4 mol/L. Moreover, the nonlinear optical properties were enhanced with higher dye concentrations, and an elevated trend in nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refractive index coefficients was observed. Also, it was found that the reverse saturable absorption was the main mechanism responsible for the two-photon absorption effect in DSR13/THF samples.

We present an experimental investigation into the third-order nonlinearity of conventional crystalline (c-Si) and porous (p-Si) silicon with Z-scan technique at 800-nm and 2.4- μ m wavelengths. The Gaussian decomposition method is applied to extract the nonlinear refractive index, n 2 , and the two-photon absorption (TPA) coefficient, β , from the experimental results. The nonlinear refractive index obtained for c-Si is 7 ± 2 × 10 − 6 cm 2 /GW and for p-Si is − 9 ± 3 × 10 − 5 cm 2 /GW. The TPA coefficient was found to be 2.9 ± 0.9 cm/GW and 1.0 ± 0.3 cm/GW for c-Si and p-Si, respectively. We show an enhancement of the nonlinear refraction and a suppression of TPA in p-Si in comparison to c-Si, and the enhancement gets stronger as the wavelength increases.

Titanium dioxide (titania) is a cheap, nontoxic and highly efficient photocatalyst being extensively applied for the degradation of organic pollutants, air purification, water splitting, reduction of nitrogen to ammonia, and optical devices due to its optical behaviors. The third-order nonlinear optical properties of TiO 2/ PS nano-composite were studied by means of single beam transmission technique, using a continuous-wave (CW) He - Ne laser beam with a wavelength of 632.8 nm with three different incident intensities. The magnitude and sign of the third-order nonlinear refractive index ( n 2) and nonlinear absorption (β) of TiO 2/ PS nano-composite were determined by use of both the closed-aperture and opened-aperture z -scan techniques. Z -scan technique, developed by Sheik-Bahae et al., has been used widely in material characterization. A single-beam (also called z -scan method) for measuring the sign and magnitude of nonlinear refraction that has simplicity and very high sensitivity has been reported recently. Optical limiting property of TiO 2/ PS nano-composite is studied. The positive sign obtained for nonlinear refractive index indicated that there is a self-focusing effect in the sample. The nonlinear refractive index was in order of 10-8 (cm2/W) and the nonlinear absorption coefficient was obtained in order of 10-2 (cm/W) with negative sign. The values of nonlinear refractive index and nonlinear absorption coefficient are enhanced by decreasing the intensity.

A huge potential from researchers was presented for enhancing the nonlinear optical response for materials that interacts by light. In this work, we study the nonlinear optical response for chemically prepared nano- fluid of silver nanoparticles in de-ionized water with TSC (Tri-sodium citrate) protecting agent. By the means of self-defocusing technique and under CW 473 nm blue laser, the reflected diffraction pattern were observed and recorded by CCD camera. The results demonstrate that, the Ag nano-fluid shows a good third order nonlinear response and the magnitude of the nonlinear refractive index was in the order of 10−7 cm2/W. We determine the maximum change of the nonlinear refractive index and the related phase shift for the material at six input laser intensities.

The single beam Z-scan technique was used to determine the nonlinear optical properties of the organic dye Nile Blue chloride in the solvent ethanol. The experiments were performed with a He-Ne laser with a wavelength of 632.8 nm. The negative nonlinear refractive index and two-photon absorption coefficient were observed in this dye. The intensity-dependent nonlinear refractive index was investigated. The result shows that the dye exhibits a great nonlinear response with the real and imaginary parts of the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility χ(3) being -4.12×10-5 esu and 1.35×10-6 esu, respectively. These results show that the Nile Blue chloride dye has potential applications in nonlinear optics.

Alongside its other favorable properties, the large refraction nonlinearity of graphene-related material makes it ideal for use in optoelectronics applications. Numerous experimental studies about nonlinear optical refraction have been conducted, but theoretical verification is lacking. In this paper the nonlinear refractive index for rectangular graphene quantum dots (RGQDs) was calculated using the relationship between nonlinear refractive index and the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility. The third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility for third harmonic generation was derived employing the electronic states obtained from the Dirac equation around K point in RGQDs under hard wall boundary conditions. Results revealed that the calculated nonlinear refractive index, n 2 , was in the magnitude of 10−14 m2/W in the visible region, which is nearly five orders larger than conventional semiconductor quantum dots, while in the infrared region the nonlinear refractive index reached up to the magnitude of 10−11 m2/W for M = 3M0 sized RGQDs where the resonance enhancement occurred. The nonlinear refractive index could be tuned both by the edges and sizes.
