The outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic has had an adverse effect on China's economy. This paper uses the event study method to test and measure the impact of the open market reverse repo (OMRR) operation on the Chinese stock market. The results show that the OMRR operation generates a positive daily abnormal return and a positive daily cumulative abnormal return on average for all stocks. The impact is larger for non-state-owned enterprise (non-SOE) firms than for SOE firms, stocks of non-Hubei provinces than those of the Hubei province, and for stocks of the information transmission and technology industry than those of other industries. We suggest that our government implement more prudent monetary policies and more proactive fiscal policies.

PurposeThis paper explores how a firm's public stand on a social-political issue can be a salient signal of the firm's values, identity and reputation. In particular, it investigates how boycott participation–conceptualized as a cue of a corporation's stand on important social-political issues–may affect the stock market valuation of that corporation, as well as how corporations legitimise their stand on the issues.Design/methodology/approachThe authors employ a mixed-methods design that uses both qualitative techniques (content analysis) and quantitative methods (event study methodology) to examine a sample of US firms who participated in a boycott campaign that sought to call attention to issues of hate speech, misinformation and discriminatory content on social media platform Facebook.FindingsFindings from the qualitative content analysis of company statements show that firms legitimise their stand on, and participation in, the boycott by expressing altruistic values and suggesting to stakeholders that their stand aligns not only with organizational values/convictions but also with the greater social good. Importantly, the event study results show that firms who publicly announced their intention to participate in the boycott, on average, earn a statistically significant positive abnormal stock return of 2.68% in the four days immediately after their announcements.Research limitations/implicationsFindings relate to a specific case of a boycott campaign. Also, the sample size is limited and restricted to US stocks. The signalling value of corporate social advocacy actions may vary across countries due to institutional and cultural differences. Market reaction may also be different for issues that are more charged than the ones examined in this study. Therefore, future research might investigate other markets, use larger sample sizes and consider a broader range of social-political issues.Practical implicationsThe presence of significant stock price changes for firms that publicly announced their decision to side with activists on the issue of hate propaganda and misinformation offers potentially valuable insights on the timing of trades for investors and arbitrageurs. Insights from the study also provide a practical resource that can be used to inform organizations' decision-making about such issues.Social implicationsTaking the lead to push on social-political issues, such as hate propaganda, discrimination, among others, and communicating their stands in a way that speaks to their values and identity, could be rewarding for companies.Originality/valueThis study provides novel evidence on the impact that corporate stances on important social-political issues can have on stock market valuation of firms and therefore extends the existing related research which until now has focused on the impact on consumer purchasing intent and brand loyalty.

Using an event study analysis, we aim to investigate the impact of political, economic, social and terrorism events, on the Tunisian financial sector, over the period of the Tunisian Revolution; from (12)2010 to (04)2014. Based on a daily data analysis using three selected variables ; Sectoral index of performance of Tunisian banks ,Index of Tunisian stock market and the exchange rate Euro/ Dinar,  the EGARCH model results have highlighted that general events decrease the return of our variables, and increase their volatility. More, results have shown that stock market is very sensitive to political and terrorism events, bad economic events increase the volatility of the exchange rate, and decrease the performance of banking sector. Political events remain the more important component, they affect negatively all the endogenous variables; coefficients in the mean equation show an important decline in term of the return of banking sector ,the stock market and the exchange rate.

South–South cooperation has been on the rise in recent years. One of the latest examples is the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) proposed by the Chinese and Pakistani governments in 2013. Using event study methodology, this article examines the impact of events and announcements associated with CPEC on the Pakistan Stock Exchange in Pakistan and the Shanghai Stock Exchange in China. The first key finding of this article is that the initial announcement associated with CPEC had stronger and positive short-term impact on the Pakistan Stock Exchange in comparison with the impact of subsequent CPEC events on the stock market. The second key finding is that the short-term impact of the CPEC initial announcement was stronger on the Pakistan Stock Exchange than on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, possibly due to the substantial difference in the size of the two economies. The empirical results of this article have important implications for investors, corporations and regulators to the Global South.

There have always been North Korea Risks in South Korea stock market since its opening. Some studies have concluded that it does not have a substantial impact on South Korea’s economy due to chronic geopolitical risks, while others have argued it has had an impact. However, in light of the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) it can be argued that both opinions view that information about North Korea Risks affects stock markets and that stock prices react to it. This study analyzed the effects of North Korea Risks on South Korea’s stock market using event study methodology empirically, and it tested the semi-strong EMH-a market in which prices always fully reflect available information. The research results are following: First of all, North Korea Risks have an impact on South Korea’s stock market and the data was statistically significant. In particular, stock market already reflected information about the forewarned events like nuclear test. However, market also responded to information about sudden events such as the impact of Kim Jung-il’s death on the South-North economic cooperation stock. Portfolio analysis demonstrated that small capital stocks were affected more than large caps. These results cannot reject the EMH. Also, estimates of market model and that of Fama-French three-factor model did not show a statistically significant difference in different verification. There was no statistically significant difference between growth and value stock in large caps portfolio either. However, there was a statistically significant difference between defense stock and South-North economic cooperation stock, small caps and big caps, and weighted average and simple average. The significance of this study lies in that it conducted the event study by variety estimation model with objective standards for selecting events when measuring the effect of North Korea Risks.

Differentiation of collusive and efficiency-based synergies in horizontal mergers has proven difficult. The authors propose a theory-backed methodological approach to classify mergers that yields greater information on merger types and merger effects. Moreover, the methodological approach distinguishes between mergers characterized largely by collusion-based synergies and those characterized largely by efficiency-based synergies. Crucial to the proposed method is that it considers the impact of merger events not only on merging firms, as is common in the literature, but also on non-merging rivals. The authors demonstrate how the proposed approach clarifies the nature of merger activity through an event-study procedure based on stock market data on samples of large horizontal mergers drawn from the US and UK (an Anglo-American sub-sample) and from the European continent the authors demonstrate how the proposed schematic clarifies the nature of merger activity.

ABSTRACT This paper conducts an event study analysis to empirically assess the industry-wide impact of cartels. Using a sample of recent European cartel cases, we estimate the effect of the surprise inspection and final decision on the stock market value of cartel and noncartel firms. The overall effect of both events is negative for cartel members and statistically insignificant for noncartel members. However, the impact of the inspection is significantly negative for European noncartel suppliers and for noncartel suppliers in nonchemicals industries. This is consistent with the theory that cartels can create additional damages through positively affecting the performance of their competitors.

This paper proposes excess stock market return as a way to measure the impact of marketing strategy on firm value. First, it provides an overview of event study method. An event study examines the excess return to a firm's stock price after the release of information that is relevant to the firm's financial success. Second, it shows how excess return captures a marketing strategy's impact on firm value. It presents a model that illustrates how a marketing strategy impacts consumers, future cash flows, firm value, investor's expectations, and excess return. Third, a comparison shows that excess return stacks up well against standard marketing metrics. Excess return yields unbiased estimates, allows direct causal inference, is future oriented, includes all cash flows, accounts for opportunity costs, factors in risk, and takes into account the time value of money.
