The problem of quantum description of fields is discussed in the framework of operator theory of electromagnetic field. Equations for noncommutative operators are established for a system under consideration immersed in the gravitational background space–time. Consistency of the theory is checked using Jacobi identities. The vector-potential appears in the theory only as a c-number function. It is planned to write a series of papers, of which this is the first. In the second paper, solution of the problem of vacuum zero-point energy divergency is to discuss.

We study the eigenvalue problem of the Faraday tensor associated with the Liénard–Wiechert electromagnetic field. We find all the eigenvectors (null and nonnull ones) that do not appear explicitly in the literature. PACS Nos.: 03.50De, 02.10Sp, 41.20-q
