The functional-integral quantization of non-Abelian gauge theories is affected by the Gribov problem at non-perturbative level: the requirement of preserving the supplementary conditions under gauge transformations leads to a nonlinear differential equation, and the various solutions of such a nonlinear equation represent different gauge configurations known as Gribov copies. Their occurrence (lack of global cross-sections from the point of view of differential geometry) is called Gribov ambiguity, and is here presented within the framework of a global approach to quantum field theory. We first give a simple (standard) example for the SU(2) group and spherically symmetric potentials, then we discuss this phenomenon in general relativity, and recent developments, including lattice calculations.

Yang-Mills theories based on the symplectic groups – denoted by Sp(2N) – are inter-esting for both theoretical and phenomenological reasons. Sp(2N) theories with two fundamental Dirac fermions give rise to pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons which can be interpreted as a composite Higgs particle. This framework can describe the existing Higgs boson without the need for unnatural fine-tuning. This justifies a programme of wider investigations of Sp(2N) gauge theories aimed at understanding their general behaviour. In this work, we study the glueball mass spectrum for Sp(2N) Yang-Mills theories using the variational method applied to Monte-Carlo generated gauge config-urations. This is carried out both for finite N and in the limit N → ∞. The results are compared to existing results for SU(N) Yang-Mills theories, again, for finite- and large-N. Our glueball analysis is then used to investigate some conjectures related to the behaviour of the spectrum in Yang-Mills theories based on a generic non-Abeliangauge group G. We also find numerical evidence that Sp(2N) groups confine both for finite and large N. As well as studying the glueball spectrum, we examine the quenched-meson spectrum for fermions in the fundamental, antisymmetric and sym-metric representations for N = 2 and N = 3. This study enables us to provide a first account of how the related observables vary with N. The investigations presented in this work contribute to our understanding of the non-perturbative dynamics of Sp(2N) gauge theories in connection with Higgs compositeness and, more in general, with fun-damental open problems in non-Abelian gauge theories such as confinement and global symmetry breaking.

Chapter 11 is the first of four chapters that discuss various issues connected with the Standard Model of fundamental interactions at the microscopic scale. It discusses the important notion of gauge invariance, first Abelian and then non–Abelian, the basic geometric structure that generates interactions. It relates it to the concept of parallel transport. Due to gauge invariance, not all components of the gauge field are dynamical and gauge fixing is required (with the problem of Gribov copies in non–Abelian theories). The quantization of non–Abelian gauge theories is briefly discussed, with the introduction of Faddeev–Popov ghost fields and the appearance of BRST symmetry.

A joint introduction of composite and background fields into non-Abelian quantum gauge theories is suggested based on the symmetries of the generating functional of Green’s functions, with the systematic analysis focused on quantum Yang–Mills theories, including the properties of the generating functional of vertex Green’s functions (effective action). For the effective action in such theories, gauge dependence is found in terms of a nilpotent operator with composite and background fields, and on-shell independence from gauge fixing is established. The basic concept of a joint introduction of composite and background fields into non-Abelian gauge theories is extended to the Volovich–Katanaev model of two-dimensional gravity with dynamical torsion, as well as to the Gribov–Zwanziger theory.

In the available literature, only the Becchi–Rouet–Stora–Tyutin (BRST) symmetries are known for the Jackiw–Pi model of the three (2 + 1)-dimensional (3D) massive non-Abelian gauge theory. We derive the off-shell nilpotent [Formula: see text] and absolutely anticommuting (sbsab + sabsb = 0) (anti-)BRST transformations s(a)b corresponding to the usual Yang–Mills gauge transformations of this model by exploiting the “augmented” superfield formalism where the horizontality condition and gauge invariant restrictions blend together in a meaningful manner. There is a non-Yang–Mills (NYM) symmetry in this theory, too. However, we do not touch the NYM symmetry in our present endeavor. This superfield formalism leads to the derivation of an (anti-)BRST invariant Curci–Ferrari restriction, which plays a key role in the proof of absolute anticommutativity of s(a)b. The derivation of the proper anti-BRST symmetry transformations is important from the point of view of geometrical objects called gerbes. A novel feature of our present investigation is the derivation of the (anti-)BRST transformations for the auxiliary field ρ from our superfield formalism, which is neither generated by the (anti-)BRST charges nor obtained from the requirements of nilpotency and (or) absolute anticommutativity of the (anti-)BRST symmetries for our present 3D non-Abelian 1-form gauge theory.

Physical Consequences

The magnetofluid unification is constructed using lagrangian approach by imposing a non-Abelian gauge symmetry to the matter inside the fluid. The model provides a general description for relativistic fluid interacting with either Abelian or non-Abelian gauge field. The differences with the hybrid magnetofluid model are discussed, and some physical consequences of this formalism are briefly worked out.
