ABSTRACTWe have studied the photoconductivity of grain boundaries in p–type silicon. The result demonstrates the applicability of the technique for the measurement of minority carrier recombination velocity at the grain boundary. The experimental data are consistent with the thought that the recombination velocity increases with the boundary state density and light intensity.

In this review the investigations of deformation process development are discussed which were carried out by tension and creep in the temperature range Т<0.4Tm (here Тm is the absolute melting point of material) for nanostructured metals produced by the methods of severe plastic deformation. The contribution of grain boundary sliding to the total deformation in the above temperature interval is also considered. An analysis is made of the effect of grain size and grain boundary state on the evolution of grain boundary sliding and cooperative grain boundary sliding in nanostructured metals.

The effective action for the low energy scattering of two gravitons with a D-brane in the presence of a constant antisymmetric B field in bosonic string theory is calculated and the modification to the standard D-brane action to first order in α′ is obtained.

In this work, we studied the axisymmetric elastic equilibrium of transversely isotropic bodies of revolution, which are simultaneously under the influence of surface and volume forces. The construction of the stress-strain state is carried out by means of the boundary state method. The method is based on the concepts of internal and boundary states conjugated by an isomorphism. The bases of state spaces are formed, orthonormalized, and the desired state is expanded in a series of elements of the orthonormal basis. The Fourier coefficients, which are quadratures, are calculated. In this work, we propose a method for forming bases of spaces of internal and boundary states, assigning a scalar product and forming a system of equations that allows one to determine the elastic state of anisotropic bodies. The peculiarity of the solution is that the obtained stresses simultaneously satisfy the conditions both on the boundary of the body and inside the region (volume forces), and they are not a simple superposition of elastic fields. Methods are presented for solving the first and second main problems of mechanics, the contact problem without friction and the main mixed problem of the elasticity theory for transversely isotropic finite solids of revolution that are simultaneously under the influence of volume forces. The given forces are distributed axisymmetrically with respect to the geometric axis of rotation. The solution of the first main problem for a non-canonical body of revolution is given, an analysis of accuracy is carried out and a graphic illustration of the result is given

We show that the super D3-brane action on AdS5×S5 background recently constructed by Metsaev and Tseytlin is exactly invariant under the combination of the electric–magnetic duality transformation of the world-volume gauge field and the SO(2) rotation of N=2 spinor coordinates. The action is shown to satisfy the Gaillard–Zumino duality condition, which is a necessary and sufficient condition for an action to be self-dual. Our proof needs no gauge fixing for the κ-symmetry.

Abstract The boundary state corresponding to the Dp-brane with a transverse rotation in the presence of the Kalb–Ramond and tachyon background fields and a U(1) internal field will be constructed. We shall investigate effects of the open string tachyon condensation on this brane via its boundary state. We demonstrate that the background fields and transverse rotation cannot protect the brane against the collapse. Our calculations are in the context of the bosonic string theory.

We propose a model describing the decrease in the market value of machines (depreciation) with age. Usually it is characterized by the percent good factor, i.e. the ratio of machine’s value to the value of similar new machinery item. Often, appraisers know about a used machinery item only by its age, but not its performance. Therefore, for the valuation of the machinery item of a known age, they have to use the mean (for machines of this age) of percent good factor. In the proposed model, the state of the machine is characterized by the intensity of the benefits it brings. In this case, the benefits from using the machine in a certain period are defined as the market value of the work performed by it minus operating costs. We describe the change in the intensity of benefits over time by the Wiener process with negative drift. This allows us to take into account the tendency for the performance of machine to deteriorate during operation. The market value of a machine is defined as the maximum mathematical expectation of the sum of discounted benefits from its use. It is shown that it corresponds to the moment the machine reaches a certain boundary state. The parameters of the Wiener process (drift and volatility) are expressed through the known characteristics of the machine&apos;s durability, namely the average value and the coefficient of variation of the service life. The dependences of the mean percent good factor of machines on the relative age (the ratio of age to the average service life) are found. It turned out that these dependencies are almost independent of the discount rate and average service life.
