A New High Excitation Objective Lens (Second-Zone Objective Lens) was discussed at Twenty-Sixth Annual EMSA Meeting. A new commercially available Transmission Electron Microscope incorporating this new lens has been completed.Major advantages of the new instrument allow an extremely small beam to be produced on the specimen plane which minimizes specimen beam damages, reduces contamination and drift.

Total energy calculations of three- and four-atomic silver clusters have been performed by the spin-polarized version of the CNDO/2 method to get the most stable equilibrium geometries, atomization energies, and charge and spin distribution on the atoms for three different basis sets: {s}, {sp}, and {spd}. When viewed from the equilateral triangle and square geometries, the last electronic configuration, i.e. the {spd} one, appears to be most stable with respect to the geometrical deformations considered. In this case, the behaviour of the atoms of both clusters resembles that of hard spheres (i.e. close-packing).

ABSTRACTWe report on a high pressure study of emission from a series of GaInP(ordered)/GaAs heterostructures. A so-called “deep emission” band at 1.46 eV is observed in all our samples. At high excitation power, quantum well emission emerges in only one structure where thin GaP layers are inserted on both sides of the GaAs well. From the pressure dependent emission in this sample we have determined its band alignments. The role of the GaP layers in suppressing the deep emission is elucidated.
