<p><span>Sprites and halos are transient luminous events occurring above thunderclouds. They can be observed simultaneously or they can also appear individually. Circumstances leading to initiation of these events are still not completely understood. In order to clarify the role of lightning channels of causative lightning return strokes and the corresponding thundercloud charge structure, we have developed a new model of electric field amplitudes at halo/sprite altitudes. It consists of electrostatic and inductive components of the electromagnetic field generated by the lightning channel in free space at a height of 15 km. Above this altitude we solve Maxwell’s equations self-consistently including the nonlinear effects of heating and ionization/attachment of the electrons. At the same time, we investigate the role of a development of the thundercloud charge structure and related induced charges above the thundercloud. We show how these charges lead to the different distributions of the electric field at the initiation heights of the halos and sprites. We adjust free parameters of the model using observations of halos and sprites at the Nydek TLE observatory and using measurements of luminosity curves of the corresponding return strokes measured by an array of fast photometers. The latter measurements are also used to set the boundary conditions of the model.</span></p>

The mammalian main olfactory bulb receives a significant noradrenergic input from the locus coeruleus. Norepinephrine (NE) is involved in acquisition of conditioned odor preferences in neonatal animals, in some species-specific odor-dependent behaviors, and in adult odor perception. We provide a detailed review of the functional role of NE in adult rodent main olfactory bulb function. We include cellular, synaptic, network, and behavioral data and use computational simulations to tie these different types of data together.

The importance of perfusate nonbicarbonate buffer capacity (beta nonHCO3) to intracapillary CO2-HCO3(-)-H+ reactions was assessed by theoretical analysis of CO2 exchange in saline-perfused pulmonary capillaries. Time courses for perfusate PCO2, [HCO3-], and [H+] were computed for capillaries containing different activities of luminal vascular carbonic anhydrase and different amounts of perfusate nonbicarbonate buffers. Mobilization of perfusate HCO3- toward CO2 during capillary transit is determined by the availability of HCO3- and H+. A supply of protons from the nonbicarbonate buffer pool is necessary to maintain a high rate of HCO3- dehydration. The analyses indicate that beta nonHCO3 has marked nonlinear effects on transcapillary CO2 exchange and intravascular pH equilibration. These nonlinear effects differ from those previously computed for CO2 reactions in an open system because the present model system consists of a sequential combination of open (within capillary proper) and closed (within postcapillary vasculature) systems. The role of luminal vascular carbonic anhydrase in capillary CO2 reactions is strongly dependent on beta nonHCO3. Perfusate nonbicarbonate buffer capacity must be considered when the results of experimental studies of transcapillary CO2 exchange and/or intravascular pH equilibration are interpreted.

By incorporating the structure of polytomous variables with ordered categories in the design matrix, nonstandard logit models are used to analyze housing choice. The detailed effects of income, age, and type of housing market on choice are examined. The additional information that is incorporated in the modeling leads to a more parsimonious representation of the data. The results confirm the central and substantial role of income; income effects are linear for owners but there are nonlinear effects for public and private renters. There are important age and region interaction effects on choice for households originally in the rental sector, and for former owners the value of the previous dwelling influences choice.

Significant progress has been made in analyzing low-Reynolds number locomotion in homogeneous fluids. Even though density interfaces due to temperature or salinity gradients (pycnoclines), ubiquitously occur in oceans and lakes, the effects of stratification on the hydrodynamics of swimming of small organisms, their interaction with each other and their migration are very poorly understood. In this article, we implement a direct numerical simulation of the migration of swimmers at pycnoclines and illustrate the role of the diffusivity of the stratified agent on the swimming of small organisms. We demonstrate that for an archetypal swimmer model, squirmer, the migration at density stratified fluid can be largely influenced by buoyancy effects. We also show that the effects of density stratification are increased as the diffusivitty of the stratified agent is reduced. The results demonstrate that the stratification suppresses the vertical migration and consequently affects the life of low Reynolds number swimmers across pycnoclines. Our recent computational results reveal the full nonlinear effects of stratification on the locomotion of small organisms.

Purpose To address the gap of divergent conclusions on the impact of knowledge search (KS) on performance, this paper aims to discuss the nonlinear relationships between KS and reverse internationalization enterprise (RIE) performance, and the co-moderation of causation and effectuation (C&E) on KS–performance. Design/methodology/approach The proposed theoretical model is developed by integrating the theory of knowledge-based view and decision rationality theory. The empirical study is based on survey data collected from 245 RIEs of the Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta regions in China. Hierarchical multiple regression and the appropriate U-test method are used to test the hypotheses. Findings Empirical results suggest that both focused and multi-focus searches have inverted U-shaped effects on RIE performance. Furthermore, causation weakens the curvilinear effect between multi-focus search and RIE performance, whereas effectuation strengthens the curvilinear effect but weakens the inverted U-shaped relationship between focused search and RIE performance. Results also indicate that the integration of C&E positively moderates the relationship between focused or multi-focus searches and RIE performance. Originality/value Findings reveal the nonlinear effects of focused and multi-focus searches on RIE performance and clarify the dispute over the mechanism of KS on performance by proposing the different moderating role of C&E. Moreover, this research provides deeper insight into contingency mechanisms between KS and performance by integrating the co-moderating role of C&E in RIEs.
