We have developed a low threshold detector consisting of Bragg curve counter (BCC), two siliconsurface barrier detectors (SSDs) and BGO scintillator to obtain experimental double-differential cross section (DDX) data for low energy proton production. Since the BCC offers advantage of self particle identification capability and a few μm-thick entrance window, protons produced by nuclear reactions down to 1 MeV have been identified. The capability of the detector is demonstrated in measurements using 70-MeV protons. Measured spectra are compared with calculation results of intra-nuclear cascade (INC) plus evaporation models and nuclear data library.

The differential cross section for the inelastic scattering of 135 MeV protons leading to the9/2+ (9·5 MeV) state in 13C has been measured. Microscopic DWBA analyses show that the angular distribution is well described by a pure (or nearly pure) 1p3/2 to 1d5/2 neutron transition with a total angular momentum transfer of 4, a description which is consistent with the previously observed large asymmetry in inelastic π+ and π- scattering to this state.

The differential cross section, spin-flip probability amplitude, and asymmetry for the inelastic scattering of196 MeV protons to the 2+ state in 54Feat 1409 MeV are analysed. The antisymmetrized distorted wave approximation is used to evaluate the scattering amplitudes in which the reaction mechanism is represented by a generalized core polarization model. Good fits are obtained to the differential cross section and spin-flip probability data. The exchange core polarization contributions are shown to be essential to obtain such fits. However, the asymmetry data cannot be fitted simultaneously, and this failure demonstrates the limitations of the current collective model representation of the core polarization process
