AbstractObjectiveTo develop a simple but reproducible overuse induced animal model of Achilles tendinopathy in mice for better understanding the underlying mechanism and prevention of calcific Achilles tendinopathy.Methods80 C57/B6 mice (8-9 weeks old) were employed and randomly divided into control group and experimental group. Unilateral Achilles tenotomy was performed on the right hindlimb of experiment group. After 12 weeks, the onset of Achilles tedinopathy in the contralateral Achilles tendon was determined by radiological assessment, histological analysis, electron microscopy observation and biomechanical test.ResultsThe onset of calcific Achilles tendinopathy in contralateral Achilles tendon was confirmed after 12 weeks unilateral tenotomy. The contralateral Achilles tendon of experimental group was characterized as hypercelluarity, neovascularization and fused collagen fiber disarrangement, compared to the control group. Importantly, intratendon endochondral ossification and calcaneus deformity was featured in contralateral Achilles tendon. Additionally, poor biomechanical properties in the contralateral Achilles tendon revealed the incidence of Achilles tedinopathy.ConclusionWe hereby introduce a novel simple but reproducible spontaneous contralateral calcific Achilles tendinopathy model in mice, which represents the overuse conditions during the tendinopathy development in human-beings. It should be a useful tool to further study the underlying pathogenesis of calcific Achilles tendinopathy.

<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Although biomechanically corrected intraocular pressure (bIOP) is available, the effectiveness of intraocular pressure (IOP) correction in keratoconus and forme fruste keratoconus (FFK) eyes has not been investigated. <b><i>Objective:</i></b> Evaluation of bIOP measurements in eyes with keratoconus and FFK. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> Forty-two eyes in 21 patients with keratoconus in one eye and FFK in the fellow eye were examined (KC/FFK group; mean age 24.62 ± 8.6 years; 16 males and 5 females). The control group consisted of 62 eyes in 31 unaffected subjects (mean age 26.26 ± 3.64 years; 15 males and 16 females). The bIOP was determined using a Scheimpflug-based tonometer (Corvis Scheimpflug Technology [Corvis ST®]) after measuring the IOP with a conventional non-contact tonometer (NIOP). The agreement between NIOP and bIOP values was examined using the Bland-Altman plot. The difference between NIOP and bIOP (bIOP correction amount) was compared between keratoconus and FFK eyes. <b><i>Results:</i></b> In the control group, there were no significant differences between right and left eyes in both NIOP and bIOP values (<i>p</i> = 0.975 and <i>p</i> = 0.224, respectively). In the KC/FFK group, NIOP values were significantly lower in the keratoconus eyes (9.93 ± 1.96 mm Hg) than in the FFK eyes (12.23 ± 3.03 mm Hg; <i>p</i> = 0.0003). There was no significant difference in bIOP values between the right and left eyes of the KC/FFK group (<i>p</i> = 0.168). The bIOP correction amount was significantly increased in keratoconus eyes (3.58 ± 2.12 mm Hg) compared to in FFK eyes (1.80 ± 3.32 mm Hg; <i>p</i> = 0.011). <b><i>Conclusions:</i></b> For eyes with keratoconus and FFK, the bIOP method is effective to adjust IOP measurements based on corneal biomechanical properties.

Introduction Sulcus vocalis is defined as a longitudinal depression on the vocal cord, parallel to its free border. Its most marked characteristic is breathlessness, caused by incomplete glottal closure, in addition to roughness, due to the decrease in mucosal wave amplitude of the vocal cords. Vocal acoustic aspects, such as fundamental voice frequency, jitter, and shimmer, may also be altered in individuals with this type of laryngeal disorder. To assess the voice of individuals with sulcus vocalis, studies generally include a sample of subjects with vocal symptoms, excluding asymptomatic persons. To better characterize the vocal characteristics of individuals with sulcus vocalis, their asymptomatic counterparts must also be included. Objective Characterize the larynx and voice of asymptomatic adults with sulcus vocalis. Method A total of 26 adults, 13 with sulcus vocalis (experimental group) and 13 without (control group) were assessed. All the participants were submitted to suspension microlaryngoscopy, voice self-assessment, auditory perception and acoustic evaluation of the voice. Results Among the individuals with sulcus vocalis, 78% of the sulci were type I and 22% type II. Auditory perception assessment obtained statistically significant lower scores in individuals with sulcus vocalis compared with the control group, and a slight difference in the overall degree of hoarseness and roughness. No statistically significant intergroup diferences were found in self-reported voice or acoustic assessment. Conclusion Type I was the predominant sulcus vocalis observed in individuals without voice complaints, who may also exhibit slight changes in vocal quality and roughness.

Classical pupillary conditioning to CS-UCS intervals of 1.5, 6, and 9 sec. was studied in adult human beings. There was no evidence of uniform conditioning in any experimental group. Nevertheless, one or more Ss did condition in each experimental group. There was no evidence of conditioning in either control group (0-sec. SI).

Capsular contracture is the most common complication after insertion of silicone implants during breast implant surgery. The discovery that myofibroblasts play an important role in the formation of hypertrophic scars led to the development of pharmacological drugs such as zafirlukast, which prevents capsular contracture by resisting the above mechanism. As a result, the author sought to investigate the effect of the anti-leukotriene montelukast on capsular contracture. Ten white female New Zealand rabbits, each weighing approximately 3 kg, were used as subjects. Through bilateral incision of the midback area, the prostheses were inserted on the subpanniculus carnosus plane. Once the silicone prostheses had been inserted, the right implant was injected with 10 mL of montelukast (10 µg/mL), and the left implant was injected with 10 mL of normal saline. Eight weeks after the procedure, the capsular pressure was measured via tonometry using a circular glass piece weighing 42.7 g. The tissue samples were then extracted, and their thicknesses were measured using hematoxylin-eosin stain and Masson trichrome stain. The average pressure was 4.23±0.99 mmHg in the control group and 3.71±0.51 mmHg in the experimental group, a statistically significant difference (p = 0.02). The average capsular thickness was 947.938±300 µm in the control group and 709.672±274 µm in the experimental group, a statistically significant difference (p = 0.028). The author confirmed that montelukast injections during silicone prosthesis insertion decreased the formation of capsular contracture.

Literature and character education are two things that can not be separated. Literature as a reflection of the life of the community, generally teaches the reader to be able to understand the wisdom of the displayed story. Literature can be used as a medium of learning, especially in the process of internalization of the value of character education to learners. The value of character education in the literary work is expected to be followed by the students. Currently Indonesia is experiencing moral degradation. The need for moral cultivation to the learners aims to create human beings who are virtuous in the future. Each subject has the right to internalize character education to learners. So in the Indonesian language, the process of characterization of character education can be done when learning on literary materials. This study aims to describe the value of character education in Solopos children's stories. this research is included in qualitative discrptive research. The results of this study concluded that in the story Solopos child, there is a value of character education that can be taught to learners, especially at elementary school level. The results showed that this child's story can be used as a reference for teachers, as a medium to internalize character education at elementary school level.

Abstract Background: The diagnosis, treatment and efficacy evaluation of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) partial rupture remains controversial. This research aims to investigate the underlying mechanism of partial ACL injuries to the meniscus degeneration in the rabbit knee.Methods: Sixty New Zealand, white rabbits were randomly divided into three groups including an experimental group, a sham group (n=6) and and a blank control group (n=6). The experimental group is composed of an anteromedial bundle (AMB) rupture group (n=24), a posterolateral bundle (PLB) rupture group (n=24). Rabbits in the experimental group were subjected to right hind limbs knee surgery to induce ACL part injury under the arthroscopy. Finally, eight rabbits including 6 in the model group and 2 in the control group were sampled randomly on the second, fourth and eighth weeks respectively. We observed the typical form of the meniscus through HE staining. Expressions of inflammatory factors including interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and IL-17 in the knee joint fluid were determined by means of an ELISA. Analysis of the mRNA expressions of matrix metalloproteinases-13(MMP-13) was performed to evaluate the inflammatory mediators in the pathogenesis of the meniscus.Results: HE staining results showed that the surface was rough and the tissues were loose displaying collagen fibers of varying thickness. Both IL-1β and IL-17 in the synovial fluid, and the positive rate of MMP-13 in addition to MMP-13 mRNA showed a demonstrable increase treads from the 2nd to the 8th week. The significant difference was found (P<0.05) compared to the control group.Conclusion: We conclude that the elevated levels of IL-1β and IL-17, along with increased MMP13 expression, resulted in meniscus degradation in the rabbit knee joint model with partial ACL injury.

Insertional Achilles tendinopathy (IAT) is caused by traction force of the tendon. The effectiveness of the suture bridge technique in correcting it is unknown. We examined the moment arm in patients with IAT before and after surgery using the suture bridge technique, in comparison to that of healthy individuals. We hypothesized that the suture bridge method influences the moment arm length. An IAT group comprising 10 feet belonging to 8 patients requiring surgical treatment for IAT were followed up postoperatively and compared with a control group comprising 15 feet of 15 healthy individuals with no ankle complaints or history of trauma or surgery. The ratio of the moment arm (MA) length/foot length was found to be statistically significant between the control group, the IAT group preoperatively and the IAT group postoperatively (p < 0.01). Despite no significant difference in the force between the control and preoperative IAT groups, a significantly higher force to the Achilles tendon was observed in the IAT group postoperatively compared to the other groups (p < 0.05). This study demonstrates that a long moment arm may be one of the causes of IAT, and the suture bridge technique may reduce the Achilles tendon moment arm.

Myocardial mechanics and energetics were investigated in an animal model of moderate chronic heart failure (CHF) created by repeated coronary microembolizations in six dogs. The final fractional area change was 34 +/- 4%. Hearts of these animals were isolated and cross-perfused, and balloons were placed in the left ventricle (LV). Chamber contractile state was markedly depressed in embolized hearts as assessed by the slope (Ees 2.74 +/- 0.49 vs. 4.00 +/- 1.18 mmHg/ml, P < 0.01) and volume axis intercept (V: 8.7 +/- 5.9 vs. 1.0 +/- 3.2 ml, P < 0.01) of end-systolic pressure-volume relation compared with a group of six normal dogs. The end-diastolic pressure-volume relation of embolized hearts was shifted to the right, indicating a dilation of the LV. However, systolic and diastolic stress strain relationships were similar in the two groups, suggesting that the average myocardial properties of the embolized hearts are similar to those of normal hearts. The relationship between oxygen consumption and pressure-volume area in embolized hearts had smaller intercept (2.98 +/- 0.44 vs 3.92 +/- 0.39 x 10(-2) ml O2.beat-1.100 g LV-1, P < 0.01) compared with the control group, with no change in the slope. These results contrast with previous findings in pacing CHF and serve as an important characterization of ventricular properties in this model of CHF from different etiology.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of pulsed magnetic field therapy on peripheral nerve regeneration after median nerve injury and primary coaptation in the rat. Both median nerves were surgically exposed and denervated in 24 female Wistar rats. A microsurgical coaptation was performed on the right side, whereas on the left side a spontaneous healing was prevented. The study group underwent a daily pulsed magnetic field therapy; the other group served as a control group. The grasping force was recorded 2 weeks after the surgical intervention for a period of 12 weeks. The right median nerve was excised and histologically examined. The histomorphometric data and the functional assessments were analyzed byt-test statistics and one-way ANOVA. One-way ANOVA indicated a statistically significant influence of group affiliation and grasping force(P=0.0078). Grasping strength was higher on a significant level in the experimental group compared to the control group permanently from the 9th week to the end of the study.T-test statistics revealed a significantly higher weight of the flexor digitorum sublimis muscle(P=0.0385)in the experimental group. The histological evaluation did not reveal any statistically significant differences concerning the histomorphometric parameters. Our results suggest that the pulsed magnetic field therapy has a positive influence on the functional aspects of neural regeneration. More studies are needed to precisely evaluate and optimize the intensity and duration of the application.

Background: The zone of stasis that forms in acute burn is initially viable, but coagulation progresses to necrosis in the process that follows. Objective: This study investigates the effects of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on apoptosis in the burn zone of stasis and on the viability of living tissue. Methods: Burns were established in the right ears of 20 female New Zealand rabbits using the “comb burn” model. Platelet-rich plasma was obtained from blood collected from rabbits’ ears (n = 10) and was injected subcutaneously into the zone of stasis (n = 10). The same amount of saline solution was injected into the zone of stasis of the control group rabbits (n = 10). Histological and immunohistochemical apoptosis analysis was performed to evaluate viable areas. Results: Apoptosis levels were higher in the control group than in the experimental group. The area of viable tissue in the zone of stasis was greater than in the control group. Infection-induced neutrophil infiltration was statistically significantly lower in the experimental group. Conclusion: In this animal model, apoptosis count and viable tissue area measurement and the anti-inflammatory results in the burn area confirm that PRP therapy has a statistically significant positive impact on the survival of the zone of stasis and in acute burn injury.
