Finch trichomonosis, caused by the protozoal parasite Trichomonas gallinae , was first recognized as an emerging infectious disease of British passerines in 2005. The first year of seasonal epidemic mortality occurred in 2006 with significant declines of greenfinch Carduelis chloris and chaffinch Fringilla coelebs populations. Here, we demonstrate that large-scale mortality, principally of greenfinch, continued in subsequent years, 2007–2009, with a shifting geographical distribution across the British Isles over time. Consequent to the emergence of finch trichomonosis, the breeding greenfinch population in Great Britain has declined from ca 4.3 million to ca 2.8 million birds and the maximum mean number of greenfinches (a proxy for flock size) visiting gardens has declined by 50 per cent. The annual rate of decline of the breeding greenfinch population within England has exceeded 7 per cent since the initial epidemic. Although initially chaffinch populations were regionally diminished by the disease, this has not continued. Retrospective analyses of disease surveillance data showed a rapid, widespread emergence of finch trichomonosis across Great Britain in 2005 and we hypothesize that the disease emerged by T. gallinae jumping from columbiforms to passeriforms. Further investigation is required to determine the continuing impact of finch trichomonosis and to develop our understanding of how protozoal diseases jump host species.

Lead isotope abundances are reported for ninety-eight galena specimens from Great Britain and Ireland. The analyses were made with a solid-source mass spectrometer. Comparison analyses show excellent agreement with results from other laboratories using solid-source techniques, but differences of 1 to 5% may occur for individual abundances when comparison is made with laboratories utilizing the lead tetramethyl vapour technique. The model chosen for calculation of ages from the isotopic composition is that of Holmes and Houtermans, using the published values of Patterson for the isotopic comparison of primeval lead in iron meteorites and modern lead in ocean sediments. This model permits calculation of the parameters uranium-238/lead-204 and thorium-232/uranium-238 in the source of the ores, which may exhibit small regional differences. The Holmes-Houtermans model ages of three suites of galenas from south-west England, northern England and southern Norway give excellent agreement with published values of the absolute ages of genetically associated igneous rocks. Other models used for interpreting lead isotope abundances do not generally give such satisfactory agreement. The significance of the isotope data from Great Britain and Ireland is discussed regionally in terms of the age of mineralization as well as the possible correlation and origin of different deposits. Of the ninety-eight leads investigated, eighty-six are assumed to be normal and to obey the conditions of the Holmes-Houtermans model. The remaining twelve are B -type leads, as defined by Houtermans, i.e. the model ages are demonstrably older than the true age of mineralization. The main criteria for recognizing normal leads are, first, the close regional grouping of isotope abundances and, secondly, that the model age does not exceed the age of the enclosing sedimentary rocks on the basis of the most recently published geological time-scales of the fossiliferous strata. Detailed consideration of normal leads suggests the existence of six periods of mineralization in the British Isles, ranging in age from Lower Palaeozoic to Upper Mesozoic. The two most important and clearly defined groups are associated with the Caledonian and Hercynian orogenies, respectively. There is, as yet, no isotopic evidence for Tertiary mineralization in the British Isles. A discussion of the causes of normal lead isotope abundances indicates that the latter could be the result of large-scale crustal homogenization processes in continental geosynclinal-orogenic belts. However, there is not enough critical evidence to identify definitely the source of normal lead ores with either crust or mantle. B -type leads probably arise by comparatively localized remobilization and regeneration of lead from metamorphic basement complexes with high lead/uranium ratios, or low radiogenic lead content. The source of such leads frequently appears to be somewhat heterogeneous and ore solutions may not have the opportunity for extensive mixing before the site of deposition is reached. However, B -type leads in some cases give an approximation to the true age of the basement rocks from which they are derived. Processes of this type probably account for the 5-type leads in the north-west and central highlands of Scotland and in County Galway, western Ireland, where the occurrences are situated in metamorphic basement rocks. No cases have been definitely recognized within the British Isles in which lead has a negative, or anomalously young, model age ( J -type leads). The results presented in this paper do not support the view of Russell and co-workers that most vein-type deposits which have traversed sedimentary rocks exhibit J -type anomalies—a consequence of their suggestion that B -type leads, as defined by Houtermans, should be regarded as normal leads.

My dear Sir,—In your work on 'Pendulum Experiments,’ and subsequently in a paper printed in the ‘Philosophical Magazine’ for April 1846, you have directed attention to the influence of the Gulf-stream on the winters of the British Islands. You have been led to attribute the remarkably mild winters which we sometimes experience, to an abnormal extension of the warm waters of that stream towards our latitudes. In this view I entirely concur, and beg to submit the following additional proof of its correctness. An abnormal extension of the Gulf-stream in the direction of the British Isles necessarily implies that the waters bathing our coasts acquire a temperature which exceeds their mean temperature for the season of the year at which the extension takes place. The temperature of the air over the sea, and finally of the air over the islands, becomes sensibly increased. The entire temperature at any point will thus depend chiefly on what it gains from sunshine, and from the warm sea-air, and on what it loses by radiation. If the excess of what it gains from sunshine over its losses by radiation be considerable compared to its gain from the influence of the sea, the temperature will depend principally on the latitude. If, on the contrary, the thermal influence of the sea be very considerable, places at different latitudes may possess nearly equal temperatures. It follows that during cold winters we should expect a greater difference between the temperatures of the southern coasts of Great Britain and Ireland, and the remainder of their coasts, than during mild winters. It also follows, that during warm winters the difference of temperature between stations situated on coast and inland stations having nearly the same latitude, should be greater than during cold winters.

I quite agree with the submergence of the British Isles during the last or any Glacial period; but I totally disagree with the theory that there has been any such depression of the land as is generally put forward by geologists. Where is the evidence of such depression? Certainly not since Pliocene times, unless the whole of Great Britain sunk and rose simultaneously like the parallel motion of a beam engine. Such a motion would imply not only a surface movement, but also a sinking of all underlying strata.

AbstractPeople rely on data-driven AI technologies nearly every time they go online, whether they are shopping, scrolling through news feeds, or looking for entertainment. Yet despite their ubiquity, personalization algorithms and the associated large-scale collection of personal data have largely escaped public scrutiny. Policy makers who wish to introduce regulations that respect people’s attitudes towards privacy and algorithmic personalization on the Internet would greatly benefit from knowing how people perceive personalization and personal data collection. To contribute to an empirical foundation for this knowledge, we surveyed public attitudes towards key aspects of algorithmic personalization and people’s data privacy concerns and behavior using representative online samples in Germany (N = 1065), Great Britain (N = 1092), and the United States (N = 1059). Our findings show that people object to the collection and use of sensitive personal information and to the personalization of political campaigning and, in Germany and Great Britain, to the personalization of news sources. Encouragingly, attitudes are independent of political preferences: People across the political spectrum share the same concerns about their data privacy and show similar levels of acceptance regarding personalized digital services and the use of private data for personalization. We also found an acceptability gap: People are more accepting of personalized services than of the collection of personal data and information required for these services. A large majority of respondents rated, on average, personalized services as more acceptable than the collection of personal information or data. The acceptability gap can be observed at both the aggregate and the individual level. Across countries, between 64% and 75% of respondents showed an acceptability gap. Our findings suggest a need for transparent algorithmic personalization that minimizes use of personal data, respects people’s preferences on personalization, is easy to adjust, and does not extend to political advertising.

Marcel Breuer was in the first year of architectural technicians to graduate from Bauhaus School. The peculiar education he received there allowed him to explore the concept of design in its broadest sense. In his European stage we find, on the most private and small scale, unique solutions for furniture. In his first American stage we see a strong commitment with solutions related to the residential land and, when he earned international recognition, he developed large scale solutions for his public non-residential buildings and urban equipments in locations all over the world. It is strange to see that an architect like him did not have the opportunity to materialize any of his proposals associated with the public space. The 1945 Cambridge Servicemen’s Memorial project, also known as the Memorial War, is the most significant one he developed in his last years in Cambridge. Had it been built, it would have been a valuable example of modernity and contemporary reinterpretation of the monument in the public space.
