Abstract Smoking modifies morphological and physiological parameters of the lungs. Due to the irritation of airways, the natural self-cleaning ability of the lungs is impaired. The mucus accumulates in the airways and various infections develop, leading to chronic bronchitis. After the cessation of smoking, the lungs of the smoker start to heal and regenerate. Cilia in the lungs start to grow again and cleanse the lungs, thus reducing the risk of infection. The regeneration of the lungs takes a long time and depends on the degree of lung damage due to smoking. The aim of this study was to reconstruct the evolution of this regeneration process in chronic smokers by using the biological effects of radon and its decay products. Thus, radon in this study served as a tracer of changes induced by smoking.

Abstract The authors establish that the destabilization of the water and temperature conditions in farming areas is currently the most significant factor limiting the development of fruit plants. The results of the weather monitoring in 2020 show significant deviations of the water and temperature conditions in that year from the long-time annual averages, the most significant of which are abnormally dry February and March, cold and humid May, as well as the alternating hot and cold spells and dramatic temperature drops between days and nights. The monitoring of the physiological parameters of apple trees showed that the vegetation period of 2020 featured an early start of plant growth, the suppression of photosynthesis in midsummer due to high air temperatures, low precipitation, and the late beginning of winter lethargy for apple trees.

Through continuous experiments, scientists have found that nanomaterials have self-cleaning properties. Solar cells coated with nanometer film can keep their surface clean for a long time and maintain high photoelectric conversion efficiency. nanodiamond films were prepared on glass substrate by sol-gel method. nanosilicon carbide was also selected as the contrast material. Silicon carbide (SiC) has good chemical stability, corrosion resistance and other characteristics. nanosic films were prepared by sol-gel method on glass substrate. The production cost of sol-gel method was relatively low, the coating uniformity was suitable for mass production

Coronavirus infection causes lung damage and leads to the development of disabling conditions. The development of the Covid-19 pandemic leads to a one-stage increase in the number of patients who need assistance not only from infectious disease specialists and intensive care specialists, but also from rehabilitation specialists. However, patients suffering from other non-infectious conditions need rehabilitation despite the pandemic. Thus, rehabilitation specialists are faced with new tasks to organize rehabilitation in the epidemic for both patients with Covid-19 and patients at high risk of infection, but without coronavirus infection, to develop specific programs for pulmonary rehabilitation, data collection on the nature of disability, organization of outpatient programs and telerehabilitation.

The anthrax pathogen trapped in the soil forms spores that retain their viability and virulence for a long time. Analysis of the available data shows that the anthrax microbe can retain virulence in soil up to 1300 years. All this time, the soil remains dangerous for people during earthworks on the territory of anthrax soil foci. Soil foci of anthrax include anthrax burial grounds (burials), places of death, sites, spontaneous burials of animals killed by anthrax and other environmental objects containing the causative agent of anthrax. Under favorable conditions, the pathogen, being in the soil, can go through a full multiple biological cycle of its development. As a result, we observed a change in properties the pathogen isolated from soil samples taken from a 70 years age cattle burial ground. Key words: anthrax, burial ground, risk of infection, PCR

Paris Linnaeus (Linnaeus 1753: 367) is the largest genus within Melanthiaceae, with more than 27 species (The Plant List 2013, Wang et al. 2017). It is widely distributed in the regions of southwestern China, especially Yunnan, Guizhou and other plateau provinces (Li 1998, Wu et al. 2004, Zhang et al. 2007, Huang et al. 2012). The genus Paris has 22 species in China, of which 14 are distributed in Yunnan (Li 1998) and five species are endemic to Yunnan; therefore, their species diversity ranks first in China (Zhao et al. 2016). Most species of Paris with a thick rhizome have been widely used in China for a long time to treat tumors, chronic bronchitis, for traumatic injuries, and as antimicrobial agent, achieving significant effect (Wu et al. 2004).

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis that occurs in an aged population. It affects any joints in the body and degenerates the articular cartilage and the subchondral bone. Despite the pathophysiology of OA being different, cartilage resorption is still a symbol of osteoarthritis. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are important proteolytic enzymes that degrade extra-cellular matrix proteins (ECM) in the body. MMPs contribute to the turnover of cartilage and its break down; their levels have increased in the joint tissues of OA patients. Application of chondroprotective drugs neutralize the activities of MMPs. Natural products derived from herbs and plants developed as traditional medicine have been paid attention to, due to their potential biological effects. The therapeutic value of natural products in OA has increased in reputation due to their clinical impact and insignificant side effects. Several MMPs inhibitor have been used as therapeutic drugs, for a long time. Recently, different types of compounds were reviewed for their biological activities. In this review, we summarize numerous natural products for the development of MMPs inhibitors in arthritic diseases and describe the major signaling targets that were involved for the treatments of these destructive joint diseases.

Most of the works published since the beginning of the 20th century have brought interesting results about beneficial effects of titanium (Ti) on plants, but much less is known about its phytotoxic effects at higher doses. Here we demonstrate the influence of Mg treatment on the phytotoxic effects of Ti. Mg, Ti + Mg and two different concentrations of Ti leaf sprays were applied on oats (Avena sativa L. cv. Zlaťák) grown on three different soil types (Fluvisol, Luvisol and Chernozem). Physiological parameters of oats as well as some essential elements contents were analyzed. The foliar applications of Ti caused significant toxic manifestations on oats at ≥ 10 mg/kg concentrations. Mg partially ammeliorates these toxic effects if applied together with Ti. The effect was strong on Fluvisol, but weaker on Chernozem and Luvisol. Ti effects are more significant the further the soil is from the nutritional optimum of the plants. This is most evident in the case of Fluvisol, which is deficient in Mg, Fe, Mn, and Zn. It seems that Ti possesses a generally equalizing effect on the elements content in the plant.

Anemia is a condition in which red blood cells are not able to carry adequate oxygen to the body’s tissues, and is widely found in nearly a quarter of the world population. The typical method to screen for the iron-deficiency anemia, which is the major anemia found in the world, is to implement a blood test called a complete blood count (CBC). However, even though this test gives a highly accurate result, it requires an invasive blood drawing and lab analyzing which could potentially cause physical pain, high risk of infection and take a long time to analyze. Therefore, this research presents an alternative method using an optical technique to measure hemoglobin concentration, which is the common indicator for diagnosing anemia. The light absorbance of the oxyhemoglobin at the wavelength of 660 nm and the deoxyhemoglobin at the wavelength of 880 nm were measured using the MAX30100 sensor. These wavelengths of light are obtained from red and infrared (IR) LEDs. The concept is based on the different absorption coefficients of blood at different electromagnetic wavelengths. This fact is used to indirectly calculate the hemoglobin concentration of blood through the modified Beer–Lambert law. Moreover, the result has been further converted to absolute hemoglobin concentration using a calibration curve derived from the cyanmethemoglobin test, which is the regular method for hemoglobin determination. Besides, the android application was also provided which can wirelessly record or monitor the data. The experiment shows that an accuracy of 90.9% can be achieved by our proposed noninvasive method. Therefore, the noninvasive portable hemoglobin concentration monitoring by the optical sensor has an acceptable result when compared with the invasive method, with less pain and lower risk of infection, as well as shorter processing time.
