The Logging Sector in the Lake States of Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin: Status, Issues, and Opportunities

Abstract Coordinated mail surveys of logging businesses in the Lake States of Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin were conducted in spring 2017 to assess the status and capacity of the sector in 2016. Many similarities among logging businesses were noted across the region. Despite the presence of many small logging businesses, much of the volume (58 percent) is produced by a few large producers (13 percent) who seem to have an advantage over their smaller counterparts. Businesses and business owners are aging (average business duration, 27 years and average owner age, 54 years), and the majority are producing below their full operational capacity and achieving break-even profit levels. About one-fourth of the businesses intend to exit the market in the next 5 years, and there is a lack of factors attracting new workforce members into business. Differences exist among states in terms of harvesting systems used, source and method of timber procurement, and transportation strategy adopted.

<p>Religion, in particular Christianity, has a large impact on Business in Samoa. Through surveys and interviews, this research was able to ascertain areas in which Christianity and business intersect to determine its daily function and the broader implications of doing business in a highly Christian nation. Christianity has taken on its own form of ‘Samoan Christianity’ through the merging of religion and fa’aSamoa which allows business owners facilitate the practice of religion, primarily for their staff members, while not being deeply religious themselves. This ‘Samoan Christianity’ is influenced by the disproportionate number of Catholics represented in the private sector who face fewer practical and financial demands than other denominations along with the assistance of historical privileges gained the status of the Catholic Marist Brothers. Businesses in Apia are heavily impacted by staff loans, theft and cultural demands, but owners maintain a positive outlook on the spiritual benefits that religion brings to their lives. Business owners are heavily critical of organised religion in Samoa, particularly the church and priests, believing fewer financial demands on staff members would ease the negative impacts of religion on business. However, interested in preserving the culture and religion of their unique homeland, business owners have opted to observe religiously motivated practises such as closing on Sundays as they believe this to be more important than financial gain.</p>

Mail surveys were sent to field staff of the Agriculture Protection Board of Western Australia to assess the distribution and status of four species of parrot in the agricultural region of south-west Western Australia in 1970, 1980 and 1990. The surveys indicated that the populations of the Regent Parrot (Polytelis anthopeplus) and the Western Rosella (Platycercus icterotis) have declined in range considerably since 1970. The populations of the Red-capped Parrot (Purpureicephalus spurius) and the Port Lincoln Ringneck (Barnardius zonarius) have suffered little or not at all during the same period. Factors which appear to have contributed to the observed changes in distribution and status include clearing for agriculture, dietary preferences, physiology, habitat requirements, altered fire regimes, grazing by exotic herbivores and reduced winter rainfall. These surveys have shown that species which were formerly considered common and widespread have declined with little comment having been made of these changes. The implications of this are serious, both for these formerly common species and for rarer bird species which have similar ecological requirements. The technique of mail surveys has considerable merit for quickly assessing the status of some species of birds, but will be limited by the expertise of the respondents and the degree to which the species in question can be observed.

This paper studies the future development choices of small business owners, getihu which literally means an individual family household in the People's Republic of China (P.R.C.). We attempt to find out what the major factors are that determine these getihu's choices of expanding, contracting or even closing down their businesses. By using a data set which includes 4,649 getihu collected from a nation-wide survey in 1991, we conduct an ordered probit analysis to obtain the following results: (1) About three quarters of sampled getihu would like to maintain the status quo and do not plan for any change. (2) Being a member of the Chinese Communist Party does not exert any statistically significant effect on their choices. (3) The level of financial risk has no significant effect while the level of failure risk is negatively related to the likelihood of business expansion. However, diversifying into different lines of business has a positive effect on the likelihood of business expansion. (4) The annual wage income of households has a positive and significant effect on the business development plan while company profit does not have any statisccally significant effect at all. (5) Female, aged getihu are less interested in expanding their business.

Abstract: During a threat, tracking men/women from any location at any time is considered as extremely beneficial. Using the Global Positioning System (GPS) and Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) technology, a real-time Google map and Arduino based tracking system is implemented. Geographic coordinates are provided by the GPS module periodically. When a person's location is transmitted, the GSM module sends the latitude and longitude of that location to their cell phone. Finally, a cell phone shows the place's name and location via Google map. This would enable owners/users to monitor moving people/vehicles using their cell phones. This research presents experimental results in order to demonstrate the system's feasibility and effectiveness. In spite of GPS technology's excellent accuracy, it's not always applicable due to technical restrictions, for instance limiting participants' views of the satellites when using public transportation, which is crucial. However, GSM is less accurate in terms of spatial accuracy. Incorporating both technologies could be the key to tracking individual's geographical information (origin, route, destination) in a more comprehensive way. Transportation research can be supported by both kinds of tracking technologies in numerous ways. A GPS/GSM system can be used to track women or children 24/7 respectively to interview them on site in real time. This system may also be employed on vehicles in order to prevent theft. This tracking system works for both business owners and individuals wanting to keep track of their fleets or to keep track of expensive assets in the field without having to be there physically. The vehicle's location (Latitude and Longitude) is communicated continuously from a remote location by means of a GSM modem. The GSM modem automatically returns a realtime latitude and longitude coordinates as a response to that particular mobile phone when a request by the user reaches the number in the GSM modem. On demand, this system will continuously monitor the status of a vehicle in motion.

One measure of the maturity of a device technology is the ease and reliability of applying contact metallurgy. Compared to metal contact of silicon, the status of GaAs metallization is still at its primitive stage. With the advent of GaAs MESFET and integrated circuits, very stringent requirements were placed on their metal contacts. During the past few years, extensive researches have been conducted in the area of Au-Ge-Ni in order to lower contact resistances and improve uniformity. In this paper, we report the results of TEM study of interfacial reactions between Ni and GaAs as part of the attempt to understand the role of nickel in Au-Ge-Ni contact of GaAs.N-type, Si-doped, (001) oriented GaAs wafers, 15 mil in thickness, were grown by gradient-freeze method. Nickel thin films, 300Å in thickness, were e-gun deposited on GaAs wafers. The samples were then annealed in dry N2 in a 3-zone diffusion furnace at temperatures 200°C - 600°C for 5-180 minutes. Thin foils for TEM examinations were prepared by chemical polishing from the GaA.s side. TEM investigations were performed with JE0L- 100B and JE0L-200CX electron microscopes.

Measurement of the egg's electrical activity, the fertilization potential or the activation current (in voltage clamped eggs), provides a means of detecting the earliest perceivable response of the egg to the fertilizing sperm. By using the electrical physiological record as a “real time” indicator of the instant of electrical continuity between the gametes, eggs can be inseminated with sperm at lower, more physiological densities, thereby assuring that only one sperm interacts with the egg. Integrating techniques of intracellular electrophysiological recording, video-imaging, and electron microscopy, we are able to identify the fertilizing sperm precisely and correlate the status of gamete organelles with the first indication (fertilization potential/activation current) of the egg's response to the attached sperm. Hence, this integrated system provides improved temporal and spatial resolution of morphological changes at the site of gamete interaction, under a variety of experimental conditions. Using these integrated techniques, we have investigated when sperm-egg plasma membrane fusion occurs in sea urchins with respect to the onset of the egg's change in electrical activity.
