Modeling the Growth of Black Soldier Fly Hermetia illucens (Diptera: Stratiomyidae): An Approach to Evaluate Diet Quality

Abstract The black soldier fly (BSF, Hermetia illucens (Linnaeus), Diptera: Stratiomyidae) is an edible insect widely reared by using various types of organic wastes as its diet. Developing tools to evaluate the growth performance of BSF is crucial for improving its production. In this study, we monitored the daily growth of BSF larvae reared with 10 diets with diverse nutritional quality and compared 7 growth models for quantifying growth performance. We found that BSF generally exhibited an S-shaped growth curve and that the Richards model was the best-fitting growth model. We estimated asymptotic growth limit (W∞) and constructed a time-series curve of absolute growth rate (AGR) by using the Richards model. We used Gaussian functions to estimate AGR parameters (maximum AGR, m; timing of maximum AGR, T; the deviation of AGR, d) to evaluate whether these parameters adequately quantify the growth performance of BSF. Correlation analysis showed that the AGR parameters were mostly independent of W∞ but were correlated with the duration of the larval stage, indicating that W∞ and the AGR parameters respond to different dietary factors. The results of pairwise comparisons showed that the diets rich in carbohydrates and protein had high W∞, m, and d, and early T. The diets with low levels of carbohydrates had low W∞, and the diets with low levels of protein had low m and d and delayed T. We conclude that the parameters estimated by the Richards model could be effective indices for evaluating the growth performance of BSF and their diet quality.

The use of black soldier fly (BSF) (Hermetia illucens L.) larvae fat as a lipid supplement in growing rabbit’s diet was evaluated at two levels of supplementation in comparison to two levels of extruded linseed. Forty-eight weaned rabbits aged 35 days were individually housed in digestibility cages and randomly allocated to one of the four diets: Linseed-Low (30 g/kg of fat from linseed), Linseed-High (60 g/kg of fat from linseed), BSF-Low (30 g/kg of BSF fat), BSF-High (60 g/kg of BSF fat). Animals had ad libitum access to water and feed during 5 weeks, and were slaughtered at 70 days of age. In the fourth week of the trial, faeces were collected to allow the evaluation of total tract apparent digestibility (TTAD) of the diets. Mortality, dry matter (DM) intake, average daily gain, slaughter live weight, and carcass, liver, perirenal fat, scapular fat, and digestive tract weights were not affected (P > 0.05) either by fat source or fat level. The TTAD of DM, organic matter, ether extract, and gross energy were lower (P < 0.05) in the diet containing BSF fat than in linseed diets, and the decrease observed ranged between 2.3 to 3.1 percent points. With increasing the fat inclusion level, ether extract TTAD increased (P < 0.001) but the cellulose TTAD decreased (P < 0.01). Overall, diets containing BSF fat resulted in a slightly lower TTAD than linseed diets, but this seemed not to have affected growth performance and carcass yield. In conclusion, BSF fat could be considered an alternative lipid source for growing rabbit diets highlighting similar productive results to linseed.

Black soldier fly (BSF, Hermetia illucens) larvae are considered as insects with a high potential to convert organic waste into high-value products. The objective of this study was to investigate the growth performance, waste reduction efficiency, and nutritional composition of BSF reared on different ratios of coconut endosperm (C) and soybean curd residue (S), with or without supplementation, compared to standard diets (Gainesville: G and starter chicken diet: CK). Seven-day-old larvae were randomly divided into eight experimental groups (G, CK, and three different ratios of C and S with or without supplementation) with three replicates with an equal weight of larvae. The supplement contained calcium, phosphorus, amino acids, and a mineral–vitamin premix which was formulated to correlate with CK. Each replicate was terminated, measured, and evaluated when 40% of larvae had reached prepupal stage. The highest larval weight gain was presented in BSF fed CK, followed by those fed coconut endosperm and soybean curd residue at a ratio of 20 : 80 (C20S80), and coconut endosperm and soybean curd residue at a ratio of 50 : 50 (C50S50) without supplementation (numbers after C and S represent their percentage in the formulation; p < 0.001). Harvesting was delayed in the BSF fed C80S20 with and without supplementation (p < 0.001). The number of total larvae and prepupae was not significantly different between groups (p > 0.05). The greatest waste reduction efficiency was observed in the G, C50S50, and C20S80 groups without supplementation (p < 0.001). All groups with supplementation had a higher proportion of ash in both larvae and prepupae compared to non-supplemented groups (p < 0.001), but lower growth performance. The highest percentage of crude protein in larvae was presented in the Gainesville and C20S80 groups followed by the CK and C50S50 groups (p < 0.001). Equal proportions of C and S without supplementation are suggested as a rearing substrate. However, growth performance was lower than for CK; therefore, further studies could investigate cost-efficient techniques to promote this parameter.

<p class="NoParagraphStyle"><strong>ABSTRACT</strong></p><p class="NoParagraphStyle"><em> </em></p><p class="NoParagraphStyle">This study was aimed to analyze the growth performance of African catfish <em>Clarias gariepinus</em> cultured in the biofloc system at high stocking density. African catfish with an average weight of 1.85±0.09 g were cultured in four units of tarpaulin tank at a diameter of 1.72 m and a height of 1.05 m with a volume of ±2,000 L at the different density of 1,000 fish/m<sup>3</sup>; 1,500 fish/m<sup>3</sup>; 2,000 fish/m<sup>3</sup>; 2,500 fish/m<sup>3</sup>. During rearing period, fish were given the artificial feed with protein contents of 28.75% with the frequency of twice a day, as much as 3% of the body weight. The results showed that different treatment of high stocking density in the biofloc system had a significant effect on the absolute growth rate, lipid retention and energy retention (P&lt;0.05) but not significant effect on daily growth rate. The results showed that the highest lipid retention and energy retention were found in the group of fish treated at a stocking density of 2,500 fish/m<sup>3</sup> but declining protein retention and growth in fish occurred. Selama 40 hari masa pemeliharaan, ikan diberi pakan buatan berkadar protein 28,75% dengan frekwensi dua kali sehari, sebanyak 3% dari berat tubuh. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan perbedaan padat penebaran tinggi pada sistem bioflok memberikan pengaruh yang nyata terhadap pertumbuhan mutlak, retensi lemak dan retensi energi (P&lt;0,05) namun tidak memberikan pengaruh nyata terhadap laju pertmbuhan harian. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa semakin tinggi padat penebaran terjadinya peningkatan retensi lemak dan retensi energi yaitu pada perlakuan padat penebaran 2.500 ekor/m<sup>3</sup> tetapi terjadi penurunan nilai retensi protein dan pertumbuhan pada ikan.
