This case engages students on a number of issues common to doing business in other countries, specifically in the Middle East. It is intended to be a basis for class discussion rather than to illustrate either effective or ineffective handling of the situation. The case seeks to integrate issues of international management and cross-cultural conflict and negotiation. Students are challenged to diagnose a cross-culturally sensitive situation and develop solutions in a team environment under limiting time restraints. This case is also designed to help students understand the cultural aspects of a situation and how different solutions could have major consequences on the bottom line of a company.

This chapter looks at how the timely development of an interdisciplinary archaeology (modern conflict archaeology) of the First World War from the late 1990s offered a comprehensive and nuanced way of investigating the many interlocking military and cultural aspects of the Arab Revolt and its aftermath. Ephemeral archaeological traces in the sands of southern Jordan, it was hoped, would speak to the origins of modern guerrilla warfare which itself contributed to the shaping of the Middle East after 1918. The new approach showed the power of objects to create and transmit impressions and evaluations of the Revolt and its personalities—not least by the catalysing effects of finding similar items during excavations of the original landscapes whence all such objects derived their historical significance. The desert, so apparently empty of information and insight, would prove to be full of both. The key to deciphering its archaeological message lay in understanding the landscape, its layers and its objects—a quest which began with the largest artefact of all, the Hejaz Railway.

ABSTRACTSérgio Tutikian is a pioneer for two reasons: on the one hand, he is one of the first diplomats of Armenian origins in the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and on the other hand he is the first one to have served in the key posts of the Middle East, mastering many local languages, cultural aspects and political sensitivities. The testimony here is an Oral History interview, in which the deponent shares the story of the arrival of his family in Brazil -  in the context of persecutions the Armenians suffered in the last phase of the Ottoman Empire -, their settlement in Rio Grande do Sul, his non obvious choice for the diplomatic career, and then focuses his testimony on events he witnessed in Iran, Iraq and Kuwait, among other Middle Eastern places.Palavras-chave: Diplomacia; Armênios; Diáspora; Oriente Médio.keywords: Diplomacy; Armenians; Diaspora; Middle East.Recebido em 09 de Novembro de 2017 | Aceito em 11 de Novembro de 2017Received on November 9, 20017 | Accepted on November 11, 2017DOI: 10.12957/rmi.2016.31421

Two views of Human-Nature relation can be found: anthropocentrism and ecocentrism. In order to understand how school textbooks refer to the human’s position in nature we analysed how “Human as guest versus Humans as owners of nature” is present in the three topics of environmental education—Ecosystems, Pollution, and Use of Resource—in textbooks of 14 countries from Europe, Africa, and Middle East. A specific grid of analysis, which was constructed in the context of the European Project BIOHEAD-CITIZEN, was used in this study. Results show that this axis of analysis is present in the majority of textbooks addressing the above three topics but not in the “Biodiversity” topic. Textbooks for 12–15-year old pupils were the ones having more occurrences than those for 6–11- or 16–18-year olds. The textbooks present mainly an ecocentric position, whereas the aesthetic, ethical, and cultural aspects are limited and inadequate, limiting the full perspective of education for sustainable development.
