ABSTRACT Results of fitness estimates for the Lap locus in Drosophila melanogaster revealed that under crowded media conditions gene frequency equilibrium was maintained by frequency-dependent selection. Evidence was obtained that indicated that mating and egg-to-adult viability were frequency dependent.

Results of fitness estimates at the acid phosphatase locus in D. melanogaster revealed that the observed gene frequency equilibrium at the locus was maintained by frequency-dependent selection. Selection was due mostly to larva-adult viability. Gene-frequency response on media with substrate (IX-naphthyl acid phosphate) added may have been caused in part by selection at the acid phosphatase locus, although the possibility of a correlated response cannot be excluded.

SUMMARYIf a polymorphic locus is maintained in finite populations by frequency-dependent selection with selective neutrality at equilibrium, it is generally accompanied by two genetic loads, i.e. the dysmetric and the drift loads. The former arises because the fitness of the population may not be at a maximum at the equilibrium gene frequency and the latter because genetic drift in small populations displaces the gene frequency from its equilibrium value. In some simple models of frequency-dependent selection considered, the drift load is independent of selection coefficients and is approximately equal to (n−1)/(2Ne), where n is the number of alleles and Ne is the effective population size.
