Abstract Oedaleus decorus asiaticus (Bei-Bienko, 1941) has been regarded as one of the most dominant locusts in the northern grassland, the adjacent area of agriculture and animal farmland, in China. The aims of this study were to investigate the effects of vegetation type on the oviposition behavior of this pest in an open field and the hatching success of the offspring in the following year. The results showed that vegetation type did have a significant effect on whether any egg pods were laid by O. d. asiaticus. Once the females laid eggs, vegetation type and cage number had a significant effect on the number of egg pods laid. The highest number of egg pods was found in the Cleistogenes squarrosa treatment, followed by Stipa krylovii and then Leymus chinensis, while the Artemisia frigida treatment contained the lowest number of egg pods. The O. d. asiaticus eggs laid in S. krylovii and C. squarrosa treatments had a significantly higher hatching success rate (over 53%) than the other two grasses (below 40%). In short, habitats with C. squarrosa and S. krylovii grasses are likely to be preferred by ovipositing females, thus population monitoring efforts of O. d. asiaticus should focus on these habitats.

ABSTRACT We investigated the insect gall distribution along savanna (xeric) and forest (mesic) vegetation in the Floresta Nacional de Silvânia, Goiás, Brazil. We tested if the insect gall diversity is higher in the xeric vegetation than in the mesic vegetation, as predicted by the hygrothermal stress hypothesis. The insect gall fauna was surveyed between December 2009 and June 2010 in two transects established each vegetation type. In total we found 186 insect gall morphotypes, distributed on 35 botanical families and 61 plant species. Cecidomyiidae (Diptera) induced the most insect galls (34.1%), and the plant family Fabaceae had the greatest richness of insect gall morphotypes (18). We recorded 99 insect gall morphotypes in the forest and 87 morphotypes in the savanna vegetation, being that none insect gall morphotype occurred in both habitats. We found that the insect gall richness and abundance did not differ between forest and savanna transects. On the other hand, the estimated insect gall richness was higher in the forest than in the savanna. Our findings contrary the hygrothermal stress hypothesis possibly because forest habitats have higher plant architecture complexity and occurrence of super-host taxa than the savanna habitats.

Tempeh is a traditional Indonesian food that has many advantages as food and the process of making it is quite simple. However, the community knowledge about tempeh and the skills to produce healthy tempeh are still low. This community service aimed to increase the knowledge about tempeh and to improve the skills of its manufacturers in making healthy and good quality tempeh. The activities were carried out for mothers living in Villa Dago Tol complex, Ciputat, South Tangerang 15414, by using the methods of counseling, demonstration, and mentoring. Monitoring was conducted to measure the success rate of participants in producing healthy tempeh. The level of community knowledge about tempeh was evaluated through survey method. The results of counseling, demonstration, and mentoring succeeded in improving the participant skills as seen from the participants' success in following the healthy tempeh-making procedure. The results were also reinforced by the results of monitoring where all participants managed to create healthy tempeh. Survey results showed participants’ increasing knowledge of healthy tempeh and motivation in producing healthy tempeh. Assessment of participants showed good results, especially in improving knowledge (73% stated strongly agree and the rest agree). The ability of the facilitators in delivering the material was also considered good by the participants (92% stated strongly agree and the rest agree). As a follow-up, the participants suggested that the training be extended to the other communities and the training also include a variety of topics such as the manufacturing of tofu, healthy food processing, sewing, and many others.

Usage of social media within organizations' value chains has been increasing rapidly. There are several benefits and savings projected due to usage of social media. As a result, there is also a lot of hype that is typical of any new web phenomenon. On the other hand, saner voices are cautioning against excessive hype and point to high failure rate of social media initiatives. Lack of best practices or frameworks and incomplete understanding of how to make best use of social media are some of the reasons cited for this high failure of social media initiatives. In addition, there are several other aspects related to governance, people, and processes that need to be addressed to improve success rate of these initiatives. Therefore, effective implementation of a social media initiative includes addressing all those aspects that relate to governance, people, and processes. The authors use a construct, “Social Media Readiness,” that encapsulates these aspects. This chapter summarizes research that shows how readiness can impact social media use.

Australia's offshore petroleum legislation is the product of a constitutional compromise enshrined in the Offshore Constitutional Settlement of 1979 between the Commonwealth and the States. Whilst it is current Federal Australian Labor Party policy to dismantle the Offshore Constitutional Settlement and re-assert exclusive Commonwealth jurisdiction from the low-water mark seawards, the Hawke Labor Government has been reluctant to implement this particular policy.A practical consequence of the Offshore Constitutional Settlement for the industry is that many offshore titles are now being split into two separate titles — one under State legislation within the three-mile territorial sea and the other under Commonwealth legislation for the Adjacent Area beyond the territorial sea. The Commonwealth proposal to introduce cash bonus bidding for highly prospective offshore exploration permits after being defeated in the Senate in the first half of 1985 was subsequently passed in November 1985.An APEA proposal for the introduction of a new form of title under the Petroleum (Submerged Lands) Act (PSLA) to protect currently non-commercial reserves has been adopted by legislation.Following the cash bidding debate the Commonwealth Minister has proposed a new set of guidelines for the award of offshore permits which will contain both a fixed dry-hole commitment plus a discretionary program in the event of technical encouragement. The paper concludes with some recommendations for establishing a more secure and certain system of title under the PSLA and to minimize the current administrative delays being experienced by industry. Finally it urges that the current level of consultation between Government and industry on matters of interest arising under the PSLA should be allowed to continue.

The Medical Management Analysis (MMA) system of quality assurance by screening medical records for “occurrences” was trialled at the Royal North Shore Hospital, a major 780 bed teaching hospital in Sydney, in 1988. This Californian approach has now evolved into a more focused hospital-based peer review system (called QARNS) which is operating effectively and efficiently at the hospital. Whilst still based on the 23 MMA criteria, QARNS has achieved greater acceptance and action from the clinical staff. Implementation of QARNS at the other four acute general hospitals within the adjacent Area Health Service is now under active consideration.

Many Neodiprion sawflies lay their eggs in a row in small pockets cut into the edges of the mature needles of various pines. These rows of eggs are remarkable for the regularity of the spacing between successive egg pockets. The regularity of egg spacing by N. sertifer is shown to arise from a stereotyped pattern of leg movements during the shift between the sites of successive egg pockets. Spacing is effected by two sets of leg movements, in each of which the three pairs of legs move forward in order from back to front. While the effective forward movement of all legs is the same, the total forward movement of the metathoracic legs is greater than that of the other legs by an amount equal to the length of an egg pocket. The metathoracic legs retrace their steps by this length as the initial incision for each new egg pocket is cut, evidently providing the force by which this incision is made. The grip-points of the legs are on the needle edge opposite to that receiving eggs, so that the wider the needle, the greater the proportion of leg length required to reach across it, and the smaller the proportion of leg movement reflected in the spacing between eggs. In this way egg spacing varies inversely with needle width. Observations on copulation, antennal movement, and related oviposition behavior are included.

SUMMARYFor phase I of a rotational grazing experiment (three grazing cycles; May–July) a group of nine cows (group S) were ‘conditioned’ to eat fouled herbage by being allowed to graze only on slurry-treated pasture (area 1), and two further groups of nine (groups H and C) grazed on an adjacent area (2) of untreated pasture. One-third of area 2 was harrowed after each grazing. During phase II (the fourth grazing cycle; August) group H grazed on the harrowed part and groups S and C grazed on the remainder of area 2. The herbage allowance was 15 kg dry matter per cow per day in phase I and 12 kg in phase II.In phase I, group S cows ate significantly less than groups C and H combined (9·2 v. 10·5 kg organic matter per day), and lost weight (– 0·37 v. + 0–03 kg/day), but their milk yields were not significantly lower (16·1 v.16–6 kg/day). In phase II neither intake nor milk yield differed significantly between the three groups, but group S cows gained weight while the other two groups lost weight. It was concluded that neither conditioning the cows nor harrowing the pasture was an effective means of avoiding rejection of fouled pasture.

Objective. High intraluminal pressure during ureterorenoscopy (URS) increases risk of infectious and haemorrhagic complications. Intrarenal pressure may be reduced by the use of ureteral access sheaths (UASs), which on the other hand may cause ureteral damage. We have previously shown that the β-agonist isoproterenol (ISO), when administered topically in the irrigation fluid, is able to inhibit ureteral muscle tone and lower intrarenal pressure during URS. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of ISO on the success rate of UAS insertion in a porcine model. Materials and Methods. 22 pigs in which a UAS could not initially be placed were randomized to endoluminal irrigation with either ISO (0.1 μg/mL) or saline before a new insertion trial. Subsequently, it was registered whether the UAS could be passed without resistance. During extraction of the sheath, any ureteral lesions were characterized ureteroscopically using the PULS classification system. Surgeons were blinded to randomization. Results. In the ISO group, the observed effect of irrigation was 63% successful UAS insertions, compared to 27% in the saline group. No serious lesions (<PULS grade 2) were observed in the ISO group. Conclusions. Endoluminal irrigation with ISO may facilitate UAS insertion and potentially decrease UAS related ureteral lesions.

The management of nasal septal perforation remains unsatisfactory. Various operative techniques have been described, with modest success. A novel method for repair of septal perforations up to 2.6 cm in diameter was investigated. A double layer closure of nasal septal perforation was designed, one with the cartilage and the other by a flap based on the anterior septal branches of the sphenopalatine artery. Fourteen patients have been operated upon. The current analysis reveals a success rate of 13 patients (93%) who had complete closure and one patient (7%) with incomplete closure. The operative techniques and results are reported here.
