SUMMARY Sexual abuse is considered as a crime against the person all over the world. Despite the age of victims, it could trigger serious physical and psychological consequences, psychoactive substances and drug abuse, reproductive disorders, suicides and even death. The aim of retrospective investigation was to analyze the incidence of sexual assault in the regions of Varna (V), Silistra (S) and Gabrovo (G) in the period 1998-2006. The material used in the study involved the archive records of the Forensic Medicine Wards in the three studied regions. The comparative study employed inquiries and the documental interpretation method. The data of the investigations are filled in questionnaires in Microsoft Excel and compared. In conclusion, we could state that: 1. The female age group, most affected by sexual assault, was that of 14-17 years. 2. Most commonly, the sexual crimes are performed by persons familiar to the victims (50.10%). 3. Among men, the most affected age group was that under 14 years of age.

Abstract Purpose This study aims at clarifying the links between sexual violence and eating disorders (EDs). Methods In a sample of 12638 victims of sexual violence, we analyzed the situation of 546 victims that declared having developed ED. We assessed the characteristics of the assault (age, type of aggression) and the medical consequences (PTSD, depression, suicide attempts, anxiety disorders …). Results ED prevalence was 4.3% in the victim sample. The age of the first assault in ED victims was significantly lower than that of the whole population (12y vs 16 y for median; p<0.001). A much higher prevalence of sexual assault consequences was present in victims developing ED with odd ratios (OR) for: self-mutilation (OR = 11.5 [8.29-15.95], p<0.001); depression (OR=5.7 [4.81-6.86], p<0.001); self-medication (OR = 5.3 [3.86-7.19], p<0.001); suicide attempts (OR =4.5 [3.59-5.67], p<0.001); Post-traumatic stress disorder (OR = 3.8 [2.99-4.78], p<0.001) ; anxiety troubles (OR = 5.2 [4.11-6.47], p<0.001); alcoholism (OR =4.0 [2.81-5.58], p<0.001). Conclusion This study confirms the link between ED and sexual violence, especially in childhood, leading to severe psychological consequences. In this context, ED should be envisaged as a coping strategy accompanying emotional dysregulation due to traumatic events, and be treated as such.

Psychological trauma primarily affects children and adolescents; it mostly results from physical and sexual maltreatment. In the Medico-Judicial Unit Center for Sexual Violence Victims in Tours, France, which I joined in 1992 for research and to give treatment, underage patients represented about three-quarters of patients. At the same time, a national survey was conducted in collaboration with Marie Choquet’s “Adolescent Health” group (INSERM), which targeted several thousand adolescents representing the general population. It revealed that almost one out of five adolescents had experienced physical or sexual assault, and that although the number of sexual assaults probably does not exceed that of physical assaults, most of the time their psychological consequences do considerably exceed those of physical assaults. Several symptoms appear after experiencing rapes or assaults. They have a distinct semiology and independent evolutions. We isolated three of them: dissociative and phobic traumatic syndrome, re-experiencing traumatic syndrome, and borderline-like traumatic syndrome. They are generally triggered all at the same time or in close succession. Re-experiencing traumatic syndrome is profound, but the other two are often more worrying, particularly in relation to children and adolescents, because they generate disorders in their psychological development.

The central prerogative of rape fiction of the 1980s is to underscore the legitimacy of the traumatic experience by providing in-depth accounts of the assault and its physical and psychological repercussions. The 1980s rape novels contain harrowing rape scenes that use their detail to emphasize the fact that rape engenders deep psychological consequences. Far from glamorizing sexual violence, these novels present an alternative narrative focus that educates the uninformed reader and provides affirmation to those survivors seeking an empathetic community. That these texts bridge ethnic literary traditions testifies to the vital importance of rape fiction as a genre: to create a literary memorial to all victims of sexual assault.
