ABSTRACT Objective: In the present paper we present an observational study of the implementation of a Neuropsychological Stimulation Program at an Elderly Day Care Center in low-educated participants with very similar backgrounds concerning social economic status. Methods: The implemented program tackled several dimensions, including daily orientation sessions, cognitive stimulation sessions twice a week, followed by movement sessions, and structured sessions conducted every two weeks. Cognitive Evaluation was performed before and after implementation of the program. Results: Results are discussed taking into consideration cognitive outputs as well as non-cognitive outputs and the specificities of community-based intervention. Conclusion: It was concluded that community-based intervention is set to become vital in promoting dementia prevention.

The most urgent challenge of this year – the COVID-19 pandemic and measures of response to it – has sharpened and accelerated the process which was initially driven by bureaucratization and formalization: increasing depersonalization of academic life and the erosion of the university as a unique form of coexistence. The Assuming the concept of the university as a value category, this article aims to review and assess the changes in the self-perception of the academic community that have matured and acquired institutional forms in an attempt to adapt to rapidly shifting societal expectations and needs. Modern trends in university development are best expressed in terms such as “bureaucratization”, “formalization”, “depersonalization”, “instrumentalization of knowledge”, and “community fragmentation”. The pandemic of effective management that has affected Western universities and has gradually reached Vilnius University, no less than the pandemic of COVID-19 and administrative response to it, weakens the academic community based on autonomous and collegial decisions, which should be considered among the most important grounds of uniqueness of university as an institution.

Several studies report sensitivity and specificity of abdominal computed tomography scans (CT) for the evaluation of acute appendicitis as high as 98 per cent. Despite increased utilization of CT, the rate of negative appendectomy has remained constant at 10 to 20 per cent. The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of CT in the evaluation of acute and perforated appendicitis in an academic community-based setting. A retrospective review of 550 patient charts with International Classification of Diseases-9 (ICD-9) codes for acute and perforated appendicitis from January 2002 to October 2005 was performed. Sensitivity of CT was 87 per cent with a positive predictive value of 92 per cent. Specificity was 42 per cent with a negative predictive value of 29 per cent. Negative appendectomy rates were similar with or without CT (11% vs 13%, respectively). Our data suggests that CT used liberally in everyday practice in a community-based setting to evaluate acute appendicitis may not have as strong of a diagnostic value as those used in protocol-driven research studies. Further prospective studies are needed to formulate criteria to better delineate the role of CT in the evaluation of acute appendicitis.

Social policies in the United Kingdom have undergone a ‘community turn’ over the last two decades, with emphasis increasingly on ‘community cohesion’ rather than ‘social disadvantage’ and exclusion. Whilst academics have explored this trend, there is less reflective work on academic community-based practice that operates on the same terrain. This chapter offers critical self-reflection of our academic practice within the community budgeting and commissioning phase in Balsall Heath, Birmingham. Reflecting on the processes of bringing different parts of the Balsall Heath community together for the project, we consider not just the challenges of ‘constructing community’ in this way, but also, the logics that underpin it.
