Nihilism and the New RealismsRita ŠerpytytėSummaryThe article deals with the controversy ‘concerning reality’ – an ongoing and constantly updated discussion in the contemporary philosophy. The analysis stems from the premises proposed by Maurizio Ferraris – one of the most prominent initiators and representatives of the so-called ‘new realism’. The roots of Maurizio Ferraris’s inclination to ‘realism’ can be recognized in his specific interpretation of Nietzsche’s phrase “There are no facts, only interpretations”. The article reveals that there is a link between this revised phrase and Ferraris’s criticism of modern and postmodern philosophy as well as the concept of reality represented by ‘new realism’. The relationship between modernism and postmodernism, the postFerraris, modern ‘loss’ of reality, expressed as a ‘virgolettazione della realtà’ (i.e. putting the reality into commas) is discussed from the perspective of new realism. The question is what do these commas mean for reality? Or one could ask together with Gianni Vattimo: “Who would need the truth without commas, and whom would this truth serve?” In fact, Vattimo’s ontological hermeneutic and the concept of reality intertwined with interpretation appears as an alternative to Ferraris’s position. Finally, the article discloses the affinity of Ferraris’s concept with the Jacobi’s commonsense take on reality and its relation to nihilism.Key words: reality, interpretation, postmodernism, putting into commas, nihilism.

This Element looks at religious experience and the role it has played in philosophy of religion. It critically explores the history of the intertwined discourses on mysticism and religious experience, before turning to a few specific discussions within contemporary philosophy of religion. One debate concerns the question of perennialism vs. constructivism and whether there is a 'common core' to all religious or mystical experience independent of interpretation or socio-historical background. Another central discussion concerns the epistemology of purportedly theophanic experience and whether a perceptual model of religious experience can provide evidence or justification for theistic belief. The Element concludes with a discussion of how philosophy of religion can productively widen its treatment of religious experience in the service of creating a more inclusive and welcoming discipline.

This paper attempts to offer a pluralist realist account of the diversity of religious experience. In the first part, I show that an influential trend in contemporary philosophy of religious experience and religious pluralism is based on the mediational image of knowledge and a problematic notion of interpretation, which generates irresoluble problems. I then attempt a redescription based on an extension of Heidegger’s theory of understanding as pre-theorical engagement with the world, which allows for the conciliation of the diversity of religious experience with its claimed epistemic force. To develop this argument, finally, I present the experience of diversity proper of the contemporary world as a type of spiritual experience in which the traits of a pre-theoretical religious understanding can be found. As a result, the paper suggests a move from epistemology to spirituality for a better understanding of religious experience.

The author of the review analyzes the book that focuses on three challenges of evolution to religion: teleology, origin of a human being, and the evolution of religion itself. De Smedt and Helen De Cruz show how these tensions arise and offer potential responses for religion. Individual religions can meet these challenges, if some of their metaphysical assumptions are adapted or abandoned.
