AbstractWe discuss our program of narrow-band (Hα + [Nil]) imaging of a sample of 30 powerful far-infrared galaxies (FIRG’s) chosen to have far-infrared spectral energy distributions similar to the prototype FIRG’s Arp 220, NGC 3690, NGC 6240, and M82. The emission-line nebulae of these IR color-selected sample (ICSS) galaxies as a class are both impressively large (mean half light radius, r ~1.3 Kpc, and mean diameter, D ~16 Kpc) and luminous (LTOT ~108 Lo; uncorrected for internal extinction). The mean total Hα + [Nil] luminosity of the FIRG’s is comparable to that found for pairs of optically selected interacting galaxies (Bushouse, Lamb, and Werner 1988), but is a factor of ~5 greater than that of isolated spirals (Kennicutt and Kent 1983). Only ~25% of the nearby (z ≤ 0.10) FIRG’s have morphologies suggesting that large HII~regions contribuí significantly to their emission-line appearance. The broad-band morphologies of our IR color-selected galaxies fall into three major categories. Nearly 75% are single galaxy systems, with the remaining FIRG’s being either multiple nuclei systems, or members of interacting pairs. Since we see few (10%) currently interacting FIRG’s, yet many (80%) with highly distorted continuum morphologies, our IR color criteria may be preferentially selecting galaxies that have undergone highly inelastic, rapidly merging interactions.

Rest-frame 0.48–1.1 μm emission line strengths and molecular gas mass (H2) upper limits for three luminous infrared sources – the hyperluminous infrared galaxies (HyLIGs: Lir ≥ 1013L⊙ where Lir ~ L(8 – 1000μm) IRAS F09105+4108 (z = 0.4417), IRAS F15307+3252 (z = 0.926), and the optically-selected QSO PG 1634+706 (z = 1.338) - are presented. Diagnostic emission-line ratios ([O III] λ5007/Hβ, [S II] λ6724/Hα, [N II] λ6583/Hα, and [S III] λλ9069+9532/Hα) indicate a Seyfert 2-like spectrum for both infrared galaxies, consistent with previously published work. Upper limits on the molecular gas mass for all three sources are M(H2) < 1 - 3 × 1010h−2M⊙ (q0 = 0.5, H0 = 100h km s−1 Mpc−1), less than the H2 mass of the most gas-rich infrared galaxies in the local Universe. All three sources have Lir/L′CO ~ 1300 – 2000, the most extreme values for extragalactic sources measured to date. Given the relatively warm far-infrared colors for all three objects, much of their infrared luminosity may emanate from a relatively small quantity of hot dust near an AGN.

OH megamasers having very high luminosities in the spectral line can be effectively used for the probing of the evolutionary properties of the galaxies in the earliest cosmological epochs. The frequency shift of the emission line uniqually determines the redshift z, which tells about the epoch of emission. One of the important cosmological problems is the investigation of the galaxy mass spectrum in the expanding Universe. There is the empirical relation between the OH and far-infrared luminosities of galaxies. Therefore, if in the earliest cosmological epochs, there were galaxies with sufficient powerful infrared excesses and containing molecular material, they can be detected using the observations of their OH maser emission. The interacting and merging galaxies can be considered as the best candidates for such objects.

AbstractWe present the first results of a multiwavelength study of IRAS galaxies with excess radio emission. The sample was selected by cross-correlating the IRAS Faint Source Survey (for |b| ≥ 50°) and the Point Source Catalogue (for 10° < |b| < 50°) with the Texas radio survey. Recent optical (imaging and spectroscopic) and radio (VLA) observations are discussed. These observations will be used to investigate possible connections between radio galaxy activity, star formation and galaxy interactions.
