The effects of anoxia, 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP), and carbon dioxide (CO2) on the late receptor potential of Balanus lateral ocelli, Limulus ventral eyes, and the retinular cells of Linulus lateral eyes have been studied. Either anoxia, DNP, or exposure to 100% CO2 causes a depolarization of 5-30 mV and a gradual reduction and eventually abolition of the late receptor potential and an increase in the latency and time to peak of the response. This lengthening of the time scale is in contrast to the response obtained in photoreceptors that have been light-adapted or injected with calcium. In that case a loss in sensitivity is associated with a decrease in latency and time to peak. Because of these observed differences, the effects of metabolic inhibition cannot be attributed merely to a loss in regulation of intracellular free calcium. Rather, because alteration of intracellular pH (pHi) by using either (NH4)2SO4 or CO2 produced changes in the photoresponse similar to those caused by metabolic inhibition, it is suggested that changes in pHi during metabolic inhibition can account in part for the lengthening of the time scale. In addition to the changes in pHi and internal Ca++ concentration due to metabolic inhibition, the possible role of other consequences of metabolism in the transduction mechanism is also discussed.

Abstract This experiment was conducted to explore rumen carbon dioxide (CO2) species equilibrium. Three lactating, fistulated cattle were consecutively exposed to three dietary treatments tailored to produce low rumen pH and increase the risk of subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) by reducing physically effective neutral detergent fiber (Low peNDF), increasing rumen degradable starch (High RDS) or both (Combined). Under these conditions, high and varied rumen concentrations of the CO2 associated to water or dissolved CO2 (dCO2) were found. The results suggest that the activity of dCO2 and bicarbonate (HCO3−) represents an important component of the rumen environment. Rumen CO2 holdup was associated with high dCO2 and HCO3− activity as well as changes in the viscosity and surface tension of the rumen fluid. All dietary treatments produced low rumen pH, <5.5 for >3 h/d, a condition associated with SARA, but clinical SARA was observed only during CO2 holdup. This pilot study highlights the possible role of CO2 holdup and rumen CO2 species in cattle performance and nutritional diseases. In the future, better estimations of CO2 species might help clarify these findings.

ABSTRAKPeran Respirator Dalam Pencegahan Dampak Kesehatan Akibat Polusi Udara Di Desa Klari, Kecamatan Klari, Kabupaten Karawang. ABSTRACTThe Role of Respirators in Preventing Health Impacts Due to Air Pollution in Klari Village, Klari District, Karawang Regency. This activity is in the background of Klari Village which requires attention to the role of respirators due to the impact of air pollution. In addition, it is hoped that this Real Work Lecture (KKN) activity can help the community in increasing public awareness of the importance of the impact of air pollution on health in Klari Village, Klari District. This is done by asking and distributing questionnaires to the Klari Village community with the role of respirators for health impacts due to air pollution. With the level of public awareness that is still minimal on the importance of the role of respirators on health due to air pollution. This is based on the condition of air pollution in Klari Village which is not very good due to pollution from many motorized vehicles, factory smoke, and indiscriminate burning activities. With the KKN activities in Klari Village, it is expected not only to increase the role of respirators for the Klari community but are also encouraged to overcome air pollution by planting trees that contain carbon dioxide gas absorption (CO2) and making trash cans to reduce the level of waste volume in the Klari Village environment. . Keywords: respirators; pollution; carbon dioxide (CO2); klari village; volume
