This paper deals with the concept of falsification in hypothesis testing research. A theoretical analysis of assumptions about falsifying behaviour and hypothesis-falsifying observations is presented, with two experimental studies. Both the theoretical analysis and the experimental results point to a number of paradoxes underlying the normative principle of falsification in cognitive psychology. First, subjects experience the falsificatory testing strategy as an impossible strategy to conduct. Obtaining falsifying results is a consequence of the quality of the hypothesis rather than of specific testing behaviour (Experiment 1 and Experiment 2). Second, under some conditions falsifying results impede rather than facilitate discovery (Experiment 2). Confirmatory testing and falsificatory testing, which have been the crucial concepts in the study of hypothesis-testing behaviour, may actually be questionable approaches to testing behaviour. The theoretical analysis is related to the standard analyses of Popper (1963) and Klayman and Ha (1987). The empirical results are discussed in relation to previous studies on falsificatory testing behaviour.

AbstractDeveloping reliable processes is one of the key elements in producing high-quality composite components using an automated fiber placement (AFP) process. In this study, both simulation and experimental studies were carried out to investigate fiber steering and cut/restart under different processing parameters, such as layup rate and compaction pressure, during the AFP process. First, fiber paths were designed using curved fiber axes with different radii. Fiber placement trials were then conducted to investigate the quality of the steered fiber paths. Furthermore, a series of sinusoidal fiber paths were fiber placed and investigated. Moreover, a six-ply laminate with cut-outs in it was manufactured in the cut/restart trials. The accuracy of the fiber cut/restart was compared at different layup rates for both one- and bi-directional layups. Experimental results show that it was possible to layup steered fiber paths with small radii of curvature (minimum 114 mm) designed for this study when the proper process condition was used. It was observed from the cut/restart trials that the quality of tow cut was independent of layup speed; however, the accuracy of tow restart was related to the layup speed. The faster the layup speed, the less accurate was the tow restart.

A theoretical analysis is presented in this paper to predict the dynamic plastic response of aluminium alloy and mild steel circular plates when struck normally by blunt solid cylindrical masses at the center. Reasonable agreement is obtained with experimental results for the permanent transverse displacements. Different failure mechanisms, which have been found in previous experimental studies on aluminium alloy and mild steel plates, are also illustrated by the proposed theory.

An actively cooled and activated cooling approach is proposed and examined in this project in order to deal with the problems associated with methods such as the cryogenic cooling method. It is also aimed to further improve the surface quality of the workpiece after grinding by combining the advantages of the existing cooling methods. Both computational and experimental studies were conducted for grinding the brittle materials with the proposed approach. Optical examinations were used to study the surface morphology. The experimental results show that the surface quality can be improved by up to 23.75% on average in terms of surface roughness Ra. The computational test reveals that the heat can be taken away more effectively by the proposed approach.

The system of indicators of quality of carbon-carbon composite material and technological operations of its production is proved in the work. As a result of the experimental studies, with respect to the existing laboratory equipment, the optimal number of cycles of saturation of the reinforcing frame with a carbon matrix is determined. It was found that to obtain a carbon-carbon composite material with a low cost and the required quality indicators, it is necessary to introduce additional parameters of the pitch melt at the impregnation stage.

An original poling method using purely optical means and based on a dual-frequency interference process is presented. We show that the coherent superposition of two beams at fundamental and second-harmonic frequencies results in a polar field with an irreducible rotational spectrum containing both a vector and an octupolar component. This enables the method to be applied even to molecules without a permanent dipole such as octupolar molecules. After a theoretical analysis of the process, we describe different experiments aiming at light-induced noncentrosymmetry performed respectively on one-dimensional Disperse Red 1 and octupolar Ethyl Violet molecules. Macroscopic octupolar patterning of the induced order is demonstrated in both transient and permanent regimes. Experimental results show good agreement with theory.

Quality prediction plays an essential role in the business outcome of the product. Due to the business interest of the concept, it has extensively been studied in the last few years. Advancement in machine learning (ML) techniques and with the advent of robust and sophisticated ML algorithms, it is required to analyze the factors influencing the success of the movies. This paper presents a hybrid features prediction model based on pre-released and social media data features using multiple ML techniques to predict the quality of the pre-released movies for effective business resource planning. This study aims to integrate pre-released and social media data features to form a hybrid features-based movie quality prediction (MQP) model. The proposed model comprises of two different experimental models; (i) predict movies quality using the original set of features and (ii) develop a subset of features based on principle component analysis technique to predict movies success class. This work employ and implement different ML-based classification models, such as Decision Tree (DT), Support Vector Machines with the linear and quadratic kernel (L-SVM and Q-SVM), Logistic Regression (LR), Bagged Tree (BT) and Boosted Tree (BOT), to predict the quality of the movies. Different performance measures are utilized to evaluate the performance of the proposed ML-based classification models, such as Accuracy (AC), Precision (PR), Recall (RE), and F-Measure (FM). The experimental results reveal that BT and BOT classifiers performed accurately and produced high accuracy compared to other classifiers, such as DT, LR, LSVM, and Q-SVM. The BT and BOT classifiers achieved an accuracy of 90.1% and 89.7%, which shows an efficiency of the proposed MQP model compared to other state-of-art- techniques. The proposed work is also compared with existing prediction models, and experimental results indicate that the proposed MQP model performed slightly better compared to other models. The experimental results will help the movies industry to formulate business resources effectively, such as investment, number of screens, and release date planning, etc.

The paper presents the novel HF-GEN method for determining the characteristics of Electrical Appliance (EA) operating in the end-user environment. The method includes a measurement system that uses a pulse signal generator to improve the quality of EA identification. Its structure and the principles of operation are presented. A method for determining the characteristics of the current signals’ transients using the cross-correlation is described. Its result is the appliance signature with a set of features characterizing its state of operation. The quality of the obtained signature is evaluated in the standard classification task with the aim of identifying the particular appliance’s state based on the analysis of features by three independent algorithms. Experimental results for 15 EAs categories show the usefulness of the proposed approach.

Peeling fibre is an indispensable process in the production of preserved Szechuan pickle, the accuracy of which can significantly influence the quality of the products, and thus the contour method of fibre detection, as a core algorithm of the automatic peeling device, is studied. The fibre contour is a kind of non-salient contour, characterized by big intra-class differences and small inter-class differences, meaning that the feature of the contour is not discriminative. The method called dilated-holistically-nested edge detection (Dilated-HED) is proposed to detect the fibre contour, which is built based on the HED network and dilated convolution. The experimental results for our dataset show that the Pixel Accuracy (PA) is 99.52% and the Mean Intersection over Union (MIoU) is 49.99%, achieving state-of-the-art performance.
