Techniques have been developed to produce microbial phytase for addition to diets for simple-stomached animals, with the aim to improve phosphorus availability from phytate-P in plant sources. The activityof the crude microbial phytase showed pH optima at pH 5-5 and 2·5. The enzyme was able to degradephytate in vitro in soya-bean meal, maize and a liquid compound feed for pigs. When microbial phytasewas added to low-P diets for broilers the availability of P increased to over 60 % and the amount of Pin the droppings decreased by 50%. The growth rate and feed conversion ratio on the low-P dietscontaining microbial phytase were comparable to or even better than those obtained on control diets.Addition of microbial phytase to diets for growing pigs increased the apparent absorbability of P by24%. The amount of P in the faeces was 35% lower.

Considering the inherent attributes of processed African Yam bean meal (Sphenostylis stenocarpa), it's appropriate utilization for chicken diets may enhance performance of finisher broilers. The study was therefore carried out to determine the dietary substitution of soybean meal with processed African yam bean meal as protein source in the diets of finisher broilers. The Processed African yam bean meal was used to substitute soya bean meal at various levels to determine the best substitution that would give optimal performance in finisher broilers. The seeds of the African yam beans were soaked in water for 24 hours The soaked seeds were thereafter air dried for three days. The seeds were toasted for 35 minutes in a frying pan and milled using hammer mill. In the finisher feeding trial, the  substitutions were 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% processed African yam bean meal respectively. Each finisher diet was fed to a group of 30 broilers for 4 weeks using completely randomized design. Each treatment group was divided into 3 replicates of 10 broilers chicks each. The finisher broilerswere kept in pens in deep litter and given feed and water ad libitum. The parameters measured included initial body weight, final body weight, feed intake, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, cost of production and carcass characteristics. The proximate composition of processed African yam bean meal showed that it contained 8.29% moisture, 91.71% Drymatter, 3.40% ash, 21.12% crude protein, 5% ether extract, 5.73% crude fiber and 56.4% nitrogen free extract. In the finisher feeding trial, the broiler group on 40% processed AYBM significantly (P<0.05) recorded higher body weight gain than the rest of the treatments possibly because of the proper substitution of soya bean meal with processed AYBM in their diets and it appeared that the finisher broilers could tolerate high levels of processed AYBM in their diets. The group on diet 2 (20% AYBM) and control diet recorded similar body weight gain (P>0.05) which were significantly (P<0.05) superior to the groups on diets 4 (60% AYBM) and 5(80% AYBM). The internal organs expressed as percent of the live weight were not affected by the treatments. Cost of production (cost/kg feed x feed conversion ratio) was lowest for diet 2 (N450.64) as against N480 for the control diet. The finisher broiler on diet 3 (40% AYBM) recorded the highest dressing out percentage of 78.78. The results of the trial have shown that processed African yam bean meal can be used to substitute soya bean mealin the diet up to 40% for optimum performance of the finisher broilers without affecting the body weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio and carcass  characteristics as indicated in this study.

1. A co-ordinated trial has been carried out at eighteen centres to study the effects of feeding various quantities of high-protein supplement to growing-fattening pigs. In treatment 1, 10% white fish meal was included from weaning to 150 lb. live weight and 3% soya-bean meal was included from 150 lb. live weight to slaughter (approximately 210 lb.). Treatment 2 was the same as treatment 1 except that only 7% white fish meal was included during the first stage. Treatment 3 was the same as treatment 2 except that the rations were changed at 1001b. live weight instead of 1501b. Treatment 4 was the same as treatment 3 except that highprotein supplement was omitted altogether after 1501b. live weight; thus there were three rations involved in treatment 4—7% white fish meal from weaning to 100 lb. live weight, 3% soya-bean meal from 100 lb. to 150 lb. and no high-protein supplement thereafter.2. Growth rate and feed conversion both differed significantly between treatments. Pigs on treatment 1 grew 5·0% faster than those on treatment 4; the average growth rate for treatments 2 and 3, the difference between which was negligible, was 3·3% higher than for treatment 4. Feed conversion for treatment 1 was 5·4% better than for treatment 4 and the average for treatments 2 and 3 was 3·8% better than for treatment 4.3. Treatment differences were not significant for killing-out percentage, length, quality of fat, proportions of gammon, middle and fore-end of the cured side, thickness of streak, size of eye muscle and amount of fat over it. Some of the fat measurements differed significantly between treatments; differences in fat thickness at the shoulder, middle and rump between treatments 1, 2 and 3 were generally small, but the lowest protein level (treatment 4) resulted in carcasses with about 2% more fat along the back than the average of treatments 1, 2 and 3. These slight differences in back-fat thickness did not result in significant differences in the percentage of pigs in the highest grades.4. An economic appraisal of the results suggested that under the conditions prevailing at the time of the experiment treatment 3 would have resulted in the greatest profit per year, and the greatest profit per pig. This ration was relatively cheap compared with those of treatments 1 and 2 but it did not lead to a seriously impaired performance, as did that of treatment 4, the cheapest ration.

Four experiments were conducted to compare different methods for estimating the availability of lysine in protein feeds. The same feeds were used in all experiments. In the first experiment the apparent digestibility of lysine to the ileum of growing pigs was found to be 0.92, 0.69, 0.73, 0.85, 0.84 and 0.97 for soya-bean meal, cottonseed meal 1, cottonseed meal 2, meat meal, sunflower meal and skim milk respectively. In the second experiment the utilization of lysine (relative to free lysine) for weight gain, as measured in weaner pigs, was found to be 0.68, 0.73, 0.81, 0.86 and 1.00 for cottonseed meal 1, cottonseed meal 2, meat meal, sunflower meal and skim milk respectively. In Expt 3 diets were formulated to contain soya-bean meal, sunflower meal or cottonseed meal 2 with the same available lysine content from the measurements made in Expts 1 and 2. The feed conversion ratios of weaner pigs given these diets were similar for the three sources of protein when the values were adjusted for the differences in digestible dry matter intake. In the fourth experiment isoenergetic and isonitrogenous diets were formulated with increasing amounts of lysine from synthetic lysine or cottonseed meal 2. The diets were given to weaner pigs and resulted in a curvilinear response to lysine particularly for the cottonseed meal, so that the availability of lysine in cottonseed meal was similar to that of synthetic lysine at low lysine intakes and much lower than synthetic lysine at higher lysine intakes. Possible reasons for the curvilinear responses are discussed.

Abstract Rumen degradability of crude protein (CP) of feed is a major factor that determines the utilization of CP in ruminant production. This study briefly reviewed the findings from six international studies of microwave (MW) heat treatment effect on feed CP rumen degradability and intestinal CP digestibility. Six in vitro studies of concentrate feed (canola seed, canola meal, soya bean meal, cottonseed meal, corn, and barley) showed a decrease in effective rumen degradability of dry matter and protein by 4–40% and 17–40%, respectively compared to control group (untreated concentrate feed). Among the six studies, four studies identified the MW heat treatment effect on intestinal protein digestibility. Due to MW heat treatment, canola seed, canola meal, soya bean meal, and cottonseed meal showed an increase in intestinal CP digestibility by 17%, 20%, 21%, and 19%, respectively. Overall the briefly reviewed studies showed that, MW heat treatment substantially reduced feed CP ruminal degradability and increased in vitro CP digestibility of ruminally undegraded CP.

The metabolisabie protein system (AFRC, 1992) requires the measurement of the dynamics of the degradation of protein in the rumen. However the recommended method, using fistulated animals, is slow, expensive and may be considered unacceptable by many in terms of animal welfare. The objective of this work was to develop an in vitro technique for the routine assessment of feed protein degradability.A 101 vessel fitted with an automatic stirrer was filled with modified van Soest media and rumen liquor (pooled from two sheep) and maintained under anaerobic conditions at 39.5°C. Small artificial fibre bags (4.5x3cm, pore size 54 micro-m ±4) were filled with 0.4g of soya bean meal and incubated in the vessel for 3,6,10 and 24 hours using 3 replicates at each time. Bags were washed in running cold water for 30 mins immediately after removal. Four replicates of 3g samples in large Dacron bags (10x7cm, pore size 55 micro-m ±22) were also incubated in sacco in fistulated yearling wethers using a 4x4 Latin square design to assess the base line degradability. In sacco bags were rinsed and frozen after removal and washed in a domestic washing machine at the end of the experiment.

Synthetic lysine and fat supplements are widely used in diets for growing pigs. However, there is evidence to suggest that free lysine is more rapidly absorbed than protein bound amino acids resulting in reduced growth performance particularly under infrequent feeding regimes. In addition, the incorporation of conventional fat supplements into cereal based diets is problematic particularly where on-farm mixing of feed is carried out. One potential solution to both these problems is to use fat coated synthetic lysine sources which have recently become available and two such materials were evaluated in this study.Four dietary treatments were compared. These were a control diet (C) with soya bean meal as the protein supplement and diets in which 0.3 of the total lysine was supplied from either synthetic lysine (S) or synthetic lysine coated with a single (SC) or a double layer(DC) of hardened soya oil. All diets were barley based and were formulated to contain the same level of total lysine (0.01) and hardened soya oil.

ABSTRACTIn order to determine the relative digestibilities of nitrogen and amino acids in foodstuffs for pigs and poultry, and the effects of manufacturing methods, equal quantities of soya-bean meal, sunflower meals [hulled (sunflower meal 1) and dehulled (sunflower meal 2)], meat meals [made with (meat meal 1), and without (meat meal 2), blood added at 250 g/kg meat tissue (wet weights)] and rapeseed meals [seeds heated at 80°C (rapeseed meal 1) or 100°C (rapeseed meal 2)] were mixed with protein-free ingredients. The diets were given to five growing pigs with ileo-rectal anastomoses, and, by crop-intubation, to 12 caecectomized and 12 intact cocks. Excreta were collected over 48-h periods. Endogenous excretion was estimated by giving protein-free diets.In the order, soya-bean meal, sunflower meals 1, and 2, meat meals 1, and 2, rapeseed meals 1, and 2, true digestibilities were: with pigs, of nitrogen, 0·81, 0·80, 0·79, 0·64, 0·79, 0·73, 0·70 (s.e.d. 0·030), of lysine, 0·84, 0·83, 0·84, 0·65, 0·84, 0·76, 0·72 (s.e.d. 0·032); with caecectomized birds, of nitrogen, 0·92, 0·91, 0·91, 0·66, 0·78, 0·74, 0·75 (s.e.d. 0·018), of lysine 0·92, 0·91, 0·93, 0·62, 0·79, 0·70, 0·70 (s.e.d. 0·020); with intact birds, values were similar to those with caecectomized birds for soya-bean, and the sunflower meals, but lesser for meat meals 1 and 2; the solubilities of nitrogen in pepsin were 0·96, 0·92, 0·93, 0·80, 0·89, 0·87, 0·87.Two hundred and eighty pigs (initial live weights 10 kg) were used to compare growth response to free lysine with that to lysine in soya-bean meal and sunflower meal 2. Lysine availabilities, assessed by analyses of regressions of live-weight gain against lysine intake were 0·82 (s.e. 0·12) for soya-bean meal, and 0·82 (s.e. 0·18) for sunflower meal 2.Amino acid digestibilities of the sunflower meals were similar to those of soya-bean meal, and were not influenced by dehulling; values for the rapeseed meals were lower, and unaffected by differences in heating severity; values for the meat meal were reduced by blood addition. Values differed between pigs and poultry, but there was consistency in the extent to which each species discriminated between some foodstuffs. The pepsin test was insensitive. The large standard errors associated with availability values prevented meaningful comparisons with digestibility values.

SUMMARYA sheep-feeding experiment was carried out to compare the influence of starch supplementation on the utilization of protein contained in a roughage (lucerne hay) and in a concentrated feed (soya-bean meal). Twelve young rams were divided into four groups, all of which received 150% of the theoretical protein requirement for maintenance. Two groups received soya-bean meal, and the two other groups were given alfalfa hay as protein source. One soya-bean group and one lucerne hay group served as control groups and received the theoretical requirement of energy, whereas the energy content of both experimental groups was raised by addition of grain to 150% of the theoretical energy requirement.A N-balance experiment carried out with both control groups did not indicate the superiority of lucerne hay over soya-bean meal as had been found in previous experiments in which the sheep were fed diets just supplying the theoretical protein requirement. The advantage of roughage protein disappeared as a result of changes of dietary regime, such as the ingestion of protein surpluses and the reduction in the amount of cottonseed hulls.The N retention from the lucerne-hay ration was enhanced much more than the soya-bean meal ration by the addition of maize. Biochemical analyses of the rumen oontent showed that a much higher metabolic activity of the micro-organisms was induced by feeding a lucerne-hay diet supplying 150% of the theoretical protein requirement than that induced by ingestion of a corresponding amount of soya-bean meal. It was concluded that the increased biochemical potential of the lucerne-hay diet could be used advantageously only in presence of ample amounts of soluble carbohydrates. The digestibility of the carbohydrates contained in all four diets was examined by in vivo and in vitro methods. The digestibility of crude fibre in the lucerne-hay ration was somewhat raised by the addition of maize whereas the digestibility of crude fibre in the soya-bean meal ration was considerably depressed by the addition of maize.The digestibility of the carbohydrates contained in all four diets was examined by in vivo and in vitro methods. AbstractThis study was carried out to determine ruminal dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) degradation characteristics of untreated, 2-, 4- and 6-min microwave-treated soya-bean meal (SBM) by using nylon bags and sodium dodecyl sulphatepolyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) techniques. Nylon bags of untreated or treated SBM were suspended into the rumen of three Holstein steers from 0 to 48 h, and data were fitted to non-linear degradation characteristics to calculate effective rumen degradation (ERD). There were significant differences (P < 0·05) for DM and CP degradation parameters between untreated and microwave-treated SBM. Microwave treatments decreased the water-soluble fraction and increased the potentially degradable fraction of CP. The degradation rate of the latter fraction decreased with these treatments. As a consequence, microwave treatments decreased (P < 0·05) ERD of CP. From densitometric scanning, SBM proteins were seen to be composed of two major components; β-conglycinin and glycinin, accounting for proportionately 0·30 and 0·40 of buffer-soluble SBM proteins, respectively. Electrophoretic analysis of untreated, 2-, 4- and 6-min microwave-treated SBM protein residues revealed that two of the subunits of β-conglycinin (α -and α) were degraded completely after 2, 4, 24 and 48 h, respectively, whereas the α subunit of this protein was more resistant to degradation. In untreated SBM, the two subunits of glycinin (acidic and basic polypeptides) were degraded in the middle of the incubation period, but in microwave-treated SBM were not degraded until 48 h of incubation. In vitro digestibility of ruminally undegraded CP of untreated and treated SBM increased (P < 0·05) with increases in rumen incubation time from 8 to 24 h. In conclusion, SBM proteins appeared to be effectively protected from ruminal degradation by a 4-min microwave treatment. SDS-PAGE results indicated that ruminally undegraded protein from untreated SBM was mainly composed of the basic subunit of glycinin, whereas that from microwave-treated SBM was composed of β-conglycinin and both basic and acidic subunits of glycinin.
