Abstract In 1979, a graduate school with a hitherto unusual name opened its doors at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul, the ‘Graduate School of Simultaneous Interpretation’, as the school GSIT, HUFS was called at that time. Up to then, translation and interpreting had not been considered as proper occupations in Korea. It was actually not known which people with what kind of qualifications performed translation or interpreting. It was therefore a completely novel idea that translators and interpreters should be trained at a higher education institution. Yet, GSIT proved to be a huge success. GSIT attracted a great deal of public attention and many talented young people. The hitherto accumulated T&I needs in society and the trend of globalization played their part in GSIT’s popularity. As the only educational institution for T&I for the first 18 years and beyond, GSIT has written key chapters in the history of T&I in modern Korea. This paper summarizes GSIT’s footsteps in order to discuss the developments of the past four decades in Korea in T&I education and studies, in the T&I profession and the economic and socio-cultural aspects of those developments. Based on the results of the discussion, the current situation of T&I in Korea is observed with a focus on ‘professionality’ so as to identify tasks for the future.

The article concerns the history of creation and activities of the Odessa Higher International Institute (1916-1920) as the first private special diplomatic educational institution in the world. The author briefly describes the history of the first such universities in the world, presents a comparative analysis of the Institute’s statutes in 1916 and 1918, considers the process of organization of the Institute and the main components of its activity (teaching staff, formation of educational process). The paper examines the students composition, the process of their rights evolution in the system of the Russian Empire / Ukrainian State higher education, the transformation of a higher education institution against a backdrop of reorganization of the Odessa Higher School in 1919–1920.

At present, the Primorye Territory is most susceptible to migration outflow, as a result of which it loses school graduates, students, postgraduates and highly qualified specialists. The emigration loss of potential highly professional personnel of a particular territory is not always compensated by their return to this territory. This situation can be regarded as a certain threat to the stability of the territory (region), the possibility of its development. In this regard, in order to develop management solutions to curb "educational migration" and identify motivators for young people, it is necessary to determine the factors that influence the choice of educational institutions. Knowing the "starting points" on the way to choosing a higher education institution among applicants, you can determine the competitive forces of higher education institutions and strengthen them, which will allow you to keep young people from migrating from the Primorye.

One of the most significant cooperative industry–higher education projects in Europe during the past decade has been EuroPACE, the European Programme of Advanced Continuing Education. In January 1993, EuroPACE ceased its broadcasts and re-entered the planning process. By the time this article has been published, EuroPACE should again be broadcasting, but with a somewhat different format and content. In this article, Bill Weimer presents a brief history of the first five years of EuroPACE and analyses the project. He examines key assumptions and decisions made, points out those which now appear to have been in error, and lists the lessons learned. Many of the assumptions and decisions made were correct; some of these are also discussed. This article will contribute the experience and lessons learned by EuroPACE to other joint industry–higher education projects. It may help them to avoid making some of the same mistakes.

Legal education in Pakistan was initiated before independence and dates back to the 1800s. The first legal education institution was established under the name of ‘University Law College’ in 1868. Currently, there are more than 150 institutions offering law programs, which include universities and law colleges. These institutions are regulated by the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) and Higher Education Commission (HEC). Over the past decades, there have been a lot of concerns raised on the quality assurance mechanism with regards to legal education in Pakistan. In line with this, the objectives of the current study is to identify and analyse the roles and responsibilities of the HEC and the PBC as regulators of legal education in the country as well as to identify the strengths and weaknesses within this regulatory system as a result of an overlapping of powers between the two bodies. The article ends with recommendations for improvement.

The article raises the topical issue of training competitive professionals capable of working under modern market conditions. The transition to market relations changes the education policy and the system of educational services provision. The professional destiny of a future manager and the success rate of an educational institution depend on the quality of providing educational services to graduate students specialised in educational institution management. The purpose of the article is to analyse the results of a survey of graduate students aimed at determining the status of educational services given within the specialty 073 "Management" (specialization "Educational Institution Management") in various higher education institutions of Ukraine. Monitoring the state of the educational services provided to graduate students majoring in educational institution management has been carried out on the basis of general scientific and empirical cognition methods: comprehensive study of quality training of master-course students, observation, survey in the form of questionnaires, analysis of graduate students’ responses, analogy. The criteria enabling graduate students to assess the quality of educational services provided by higher education institutions have been defined: the fundamental nature of training; level of knowledge and experience of teaching staff; organization of the educational process; culture and communication level of teachers; reaction of teachers and administration of higher education institution to further demands of graduate students, etc. On the basis of the analysis and generalisation of the processed material, the basic demands of master-course students majoring in educational institution management for increase in the level of educational services have been defined: decrease in theorising of educational material; practice orientation; increase in the use of interactive teaching methods by teachers; expansion of the list of optional courses; increase in opportunities for individual counselling at a convenient time; involvement of leading specialists, experts, experienced educational institution managers in teaching; improvement of facilities and resources of an institution; increase in the level of additional educational services provision in higher education institutions. According to the results of the study, it has been concluded that it is necessary to establish a flexible system of training master-course students majoring in educational institution management.

The article reveals the problem of finding pedagogical conditions of the formation of a sanitary and hygienic culture of future engineer-teacher in the field of food technologies. The peculiarities of the formation of sanitary and hygienic culture in future specialists in the educational process of higher education are highlighted. They will provide the following pedagogical conditions: providing positive motivation of future engineer-teachers of food technologies to form sanitary and hygienic culture through updating introduction of interdisciplinary links with the relevant software and methodological support; introduction of the discipline of free choice; using the potential of industrial practice to gain experience in the formation of sanitary and hygienic culture.The transition of the state from a planned to a market economy requires an increase in the competitiveness of food production, so the future engineer-teacher in the field of food technologies must meet high requirements for the level of ability and willingness to act effectively in professional activities, which involves solving various socio-psychological, economic and technical problems with the possibility of introducing new educational technologies. Purposeful activity in the direction of rethinking the formed stereotypes, the search of new pedagogical approaches in terms of increase of own professional readiness and professional and personal qualities will allow the future engineer-teacher on completion of the higher education institution to possess a complex of engineering and pedagogical knowledge necessary for future productive professional activity. The effectiveness of training depends on the environment of the higher education institution and specific conditions for the educational process, i.e., to establish the level of readiness of the future engineer-teacher, it is necessary to determine the pedagogical conditions to ensure an effective educational process. The idea of Africanization is arguably one of the most important and prevalent in African historiography and African studies. I first encountered this notion some eight years ago when I started graduate school. With a background in Mexican and Latin American history, I found it necessary to immerse myself in the historiography of Africa. It was in this process that I encountered the idea of Africanization. It was not always identified in this manner, but it was clear that historians were, in one way or another, articulating a concern about how “African” was African history.The objective of this paper is to examine the history of Africanization in African historiography. It departs from two basic premises. First, the issues that come with the idea of Africanization are more pronounced in the field of African history. When compared to other fields, such as Latin American history, this indigenizing of history is not given nearly so much attention. Second, the idea that African history needs to be Africanized has been taken for granted, and has not been critically examined. Here I will contend that the historical conditions that have framed the emergence and development of African historiography have made it necessary to emphasize the issue of Africanization. I will also argue that those conditions have changed in the past fifty years, and that the questions raised in the quest to Africanize history should be redefined in view of the new challenges for African history and of historiography at large.

This article illuminates potential obstacles facing the reproductive justice movement and the way those obstacles might be overcome. Since 2010, reproductive justice—an agenda that fuses access to reproductive health services and demands for social justice—has energized feminist scholars and activists and captured broader public attention. Abortion rights advocates in the past dismissed reproductive justice claims as risky and unlikely to appeal to a broad enough audience. These obstacles are not as daunting as they first appear. Reframing the abortion right as a matter of women’s equality may eliminate some of the constitutional hurdles facing a reproductive justice approach. The political obstacles may be just as surmountable. Understanding the history of the constitutional discourse concerning reproductive justice and reproductive rights may allow us to move beyond the impasse that has defined the relationship between the two for too long.
