Variations in Distribution of Western Grey Kangaroos, Macropus-Fuliginosus-Ocydromus, in the Tutanning Nature Reserve and Their Impact on Adjacent Farmland

The distribution of western grey kangaroos, Macropus fuliginosus ocydromus, within the Tutanning Nature Reserve, near Pingelly W.A., was monitored for six years from faecal accumulation on fixed transects throughout the reserve, and from locations of animals sighted. Animal density varied between the eastern and western halves of the reserve, but this variation could not be explained by differences in the vegetation characteristics that were measured. Significantly more use was made by the kangaroos of Eucalyptus wandoo-E. accedens open woodland than of dense areas of Casuarina huegliana or of tall kwongan vegetation. Animal numbers declined by 40% in 1982 (from 800 to 500), a drought year, and remained at this lower level for the final three years of the study. The numbers of animals seen on farmland at night were higher on crops than on pastures, and higher in areas adjacent to parts of the reserve with greater densities of kangaroos. The proportion of the population seen on farmland on any one night varied seasonally, but averaged 4.5% in 1981, before the population decline, to 5.6% in 1983, a year of very low winter rainfall. Estimation of crop damage made in one year shows that damage was restricted to those parts within 100 m of the reserve. The crop losses appear to be around 1% of paddock yields.

The density of the burrowing scorpion Urodacus armatus in relation to vegetation type was assessed by counting the number of burrows, both the annual cohort of dispersing second instar and all older scorpions. The counts were made in 18 two metre wide transects across a 730 ha portion of Durokoppin Nature Reserve in the central wheatbelt of Western Australia. Densities were highest in woodlands (593/ha to 1950/ha), whereas in shrub and mallee associations densities were considerable lower (47/ha to 382/ha). Productivity, as measured by the ratio of second to older instar scorpions, ranged from 0.42 in low, open heath to 2.68 in Wandoo/Salmon Gum Eucalyptus capillosa/E. salmonophloia woodland. However, the correlation between productivity and the density of older scorpions in the vegetation associations was not significant. Total population in the study area was 254 954, of which 165 934 were second instar scorpions. Biomass estimates for second instar and older scorpions were 12 kg and 156 kg respectively. Observations throughout the wheatbelt indicated that the relationship between density and vegetation was comparable to that found in the study area. Using the data on the areas of the vegetation associations in the Avon Botanical District, before and after agricultural clearing (Beard and Sprenger 1984), and the densities in the present study, the abundance and biomass, pre- and post-clearing were calculated. The standing population (excluding the annual cohort) would have been of the order of 1.2 billion, with an annual influx of 2.6 billion. The biomasses would have been 690 tonnes and 210 tonnes respectively. Clearing reduced the area of habitat by 86% and the standing population by 92% and in woodland by 97%. The implications of these results for other species are discussed.

In a 42,750-ha survey area in subtropical Queensland, rabbit warrens are confined mainly to sandy soils. Within these favoured areas the population is distributed unevenly, and there is further selection for preferred habitats. Detailed studies on a 246-ha area of sandhill showed that the open woodland and grassy open woodland associations contain most warrens per unit area, and also the largest warrens. The quality of habitat for rabbits appears to be determined by availability of food, type of soil, and vegetation cover providing protection from predators. In some vegetation associations, use of burrows varies only slightly, in others there are significant changes. There is a significant correlation between the estimated numbers of rabbits in the population, the total number of rabbits seen on spotlight transect counts in the evening, the numbers of rabbits seen on warrens during late afternoon watches, and the total number of active burrow entrances present in the study area. A list of plant species present and a description of the 23 vegetation associations in the study area is presented.

Season of fire has marked effects on floristic composition in fire-prone Mediterranean-climate shrublands. In these winter-rainfall systems, summer-autumn fires lead to optimal recruitment of overstorey proteoid shrubs (non-sprouting, slow-maturing, serotinous Proteaceae) which are important to the conservation of floral diversity. We explored whether fire season has similar effects on early establishment of five proteoid species in the eastern coastal part of the Cape Floral Kingdom (South Africa) where rainfall occurs year-round and where weather conducive to fire and the actual incidence of fire are largely aseasonal. We surveyed recruitment success (ratio of post-fire recruits to pre-fire parents) of proteoids after fires in different seasons. We also planted proteoid seeds into exclosures, designed to prevent predation by small mammals and birds, in cleared (intended to simulate fire) fynbos shrublands at different sites in each of four seasons and monitored their germination and survival to one year post-planting (hereafter termed ‘recruitment’). Factors (in decreasing order of importance) affecting recruitment success in the post-fire surveys were species, pre-fire parent density, post-fire age of the vegetation at the time of assessment, and fire season, whereas rainfall (for six months post-fire) and fire return interval (>7 years) had little effect. In the seed-planting experiment, germination occurred during the cooler months and mostly within two months of planting, except for summer-plantings, which took 2–3 months longer to germinate. Although recruitment success differed significantly among planting seasons, sites and species, significant interactions occurred among the experimental factors. In both the post-fire surveys and seed planting experiment, recruitment success in relation to fire- or planting season varied greatly within and among species and sites. Results of these two datasets were furthermore inconsistent, suggesting that proteoid recruitment responses are not related to the season of fire. Germination appeared less rainfall-dependent than in winter-rainfall shrublands, suggesting that summer drought-avoiding dormancy is limited and has less influence on variation in recruitment success among fire seasons. The varied response of proteoid recruitment to fire season (or its simulation) implies that burning does not have to be restricted to particular seasons in eastern coastal fynbos, affording more flexibility for fire management than in shrublands associated with winter rainfall.

Objective: To study the safety and efficacy of Surecut needle in obtaining the liver tissue by percutaneous liver biopsy. Design: Single centered prospective hospital based study. Place and duration of study: Department of Internal medicine (Unit-1) & Family ward, Combined military hospital Lahore for more than one year from August 2002 to March 2004. Materials and Methods: One hundred and fifty patients of either gender having asymptomatic hepatitis C carrier state, healthy blood donors, with positive HCV-PCR were included in study. The patients liver biopsy was done with Surecut needle 16G with patient breath suspended in expiration from the periphery of right lobe of liver. Result: Majority of patients, 135 ( 90% ) were male and 15 (10%) were female. The mean age was 30.3 years with range of 25-55years. In 146(97.31%)patients successful biopsy was done while the biopsy was non-diagnostic in 4(2.69%) patients. Mean core length of liver tissue obtained was Mean+sd(1.2+0.42cm) and histopathologic diagnosis was made in 97.31% cases. Total number of attempts were 1-2. In 99% single attempt was done. No major complications related to procedure was seen. Conclusions: liver biopsy with Surecut needle is safe and effective in establishing the diagnosis of Chronic hepatitis.

This chapter discusses value added tax (VAT) in the UK. VAT is charged on supplies of goods and services made in the UK. Where a person makes taxable supplies in excess of a set limit in any one-year period, he must register with Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC). He must then account to HMRC for VAT on all taxable supplies made. The total amount payable may be reduced by the amount of VAT paid on certain taxable supplies made to him. The liability to pay VAT to HMRC rests on suppliers of goods and services. However, the cost of the tax is actually borne by suppliers’ customers who are charged VAT on the goods and services they purchase. VAT is charged in the UK under the Value Added Tax Act (VATA) 1994.

A report was made on cholera El Tor in children under 2 years of age with mute gastroenteritis admitted to the pediatric ward of the Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya. Twenty-three out of 115 cases (20%) showed positive stool cultures. A similar report was made in the same period on patients with gastroenteritis in private practice. Four out of 108 cases (3.6%) showed positive stool cultures. A brief description of the disease pattern of infantile gastroenteritis was presented. The increasing incidence of cholera, below one year was also discussed.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the water sorption and solubility of different adhesives. Adper Easy Bond, Adper Single Bond Plus, Bond Force, Clearfil SE Bond (bonding resin only), and Xeno IV were the materials evaluated. Ten disks of each adhesive were made in Teflon molds and evaporation of any volatile components was allowed. The disks were weighed daily in an analytical balance until a constant mass was obtained (m1). Disks were then immersed in water for 12 months when their wet weight was recorded (m2). The disks were again weighed daily until a constant mass was obtained and the final weight recorded (m3). Water sorption and solubility (percentages) were calculated using the recorded mass values. Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to compare the average water sorption and solubility among the different adhesives. Mann-Whitney tests with a Bonferroni correction were used to determine the pairwise differences between adhesives in water sorption and solubility. The level of significance was set at 0.05. Water sorption and solubility were significantly different among the groups (p<0.05). Pairwise comparisons showed no significant differences (p>0.05) between Adper Single Bond Plus and Bond Force, or between Clearfil SE Bond and Xeno IV in either water sorption or solubility. Xeno IV did not differ from Adper Easy Bond in water sorption (p>0.05). Water sorption and solubility of all-in-one adhesives increased with time, and the rates of increase were composition-dependent. The results suggest that monomers other than HEMA contribute to water sorption and solubility of adhesive systems from different categories.

An investigation on inheritance in hybrids between the three English species of Echinus was carried out in the Marine Biological Laboratory, Plymouth, during 1909–1912 by C. Shearer, W. de Morgan, and H. M. Fuchs. In a paper published in the Phil. Trans. Royal Soo., Ser. B, Vol. CCIV., p. 255, the results of this work were described in detail. At the time of publication, E. miliaris had been raised from the egg to maturity in the laboratory, in the course of one year, and a second generation had been obtained from these individuals, but none of the hybrid urchins had as yet reached maturity. This year, however, some of the hybrids have become sexually mature, and from them a second hybrid generation has been raised.The urchins which have formed ripe genital products are four individuals of the cross E. esculentus X E. acutus (referred to below as EA) derived from fertilizations made in 1912. The largest of these urchins now measures 6 cm. in diameter, exclusive of the spines. On May 11th, 1914, two of these hybrids laid eggs in the tank in which they were kept. Naturally these eggs could not be used for experimental purposes, since they were deposited in the sea water of the aquarium circulation, and therefore not under sterile conditions. On June 6th I induced three of the four to deposit genital products without cutting them open, under conditions which excluded the possible presence of foreign eggs or spermatozoa. It is hardly necessary to mention here that, as in all the previous work on Echinus hybrids, the fact of the complete absence of such sperm was made certain by controls of unfertilized eggs, none of which segmented.

BackgroundPrior studies evaluating the Wingspan stent for treatment of symptomatic intracranial atherosclerotic disease have included patients with a spectrum of both on-label and off-label indications for the stent. The WEAVE trial assessed 152 patients stented with the Wingspan stent strictly by its current on-label indication and found a 2.6% periprocedural stroke and death rate.ObjectiveThis WOVEN study assesses the 1-year follow-up from this cohort.MethodsTwelve of the original 24 sites enrolling patients in the WEAVE trial performed follow-up chart review and imaging analysis up to 1 year after stenting. Assessment of delayed stroke and death was made in 129 patients, as well as vascular imaging follow-up to assess for in-stent re-stenosis.ResultsIn the 1-year follow-up period, seven patients had a stroke (six minor, one major). Subsequent to the periprocedural period, no deaths were recorded in the cohort. Including the four patients who had periprocedural events in the WEAVE study, there were 11 strokes or deaths of the 129 patients (8.5%) at the 1-year follow-up.ConclusionsThe WOVEN study provides the 1-year follow-up on a cohort of 129 patients who were stented according to the current on-label use. It provides a more homogeneous patient group for analysis than prior studies, and demonstrates a relatively low 8.5% 1-year stroke and death rate in stented patients.
