The distribution and abundance of the New Holland mouse (Pseudomys novaehollandiae) was assessed at Anglesea, Victoria, between February 1995 and October 1996. Twenty sites were trapped within the Forest Road Flora Reserve during April and May 1995. The twenty sites were distributed over four vegetation communities, and four successional post-fire ages. Pseudomys novaehollandiaewas found at only four sites, two located in heathy woodland vegetation, and two within a regenerating pine plantation. All four sites had a post-fire age of 7-9 years. Sites inhabited by P. novaehollandiae were found to have a high floristic richness of heath plants, and density of the understorey vegetation was greatest at a level below 20 cm. The population density of P. novaehollandiae was found to be high (10-20 ha-1 ) during early 1995 but declined after June 1995 to 3-10 ha-1 . Home ranges of males and females were similar and overlap occurred amongst individuals at the four sites, indicating that the populations on the four grids formed a single contiguous population.

The socio-ecology of Petauroides volans has been studied for subtropical and temperate populations, but not for the northern tropical subspecies, Petauroides volans minor. Data on the effects of a high population density on home ranges, time budgets and food-tree use were obtained by means of radio-telemetry. Three techniques were used to estimate home-range area (kernel, MCP and harmonic mean) and the kernel method was preferred. Estimates of home-range area (defined by the 95% kernel) gave mean values of 2.5 and 1.3 ha for males and females, respectively. Broad overlap of home ranges of males was observed, which has not been reported previously for populations of P. volans. Behaviour patterns for males and females were similar to those in previous studies, although the mating system may differ, possibly because of the high population density. Dietary patterns were similar to those previously reported for this species, the most important food items being young leaves and flower buds of particular eucalypt species, notably Eucalyptus acmenoides.

Patterns of movements and dispersion were studied in a population of the bank vole, Clethrionomys glareolus, during two winters near Uppsala, Sweden. Forty-one percent of the individuals studied were involved in multiple captures. However, multiple captures accounted for only 2% of all captures. Males and females were most often caught together in multiple captures. An overlap in home range was more pronounced in females than in males during winter. The reverse was observed during the reproductive season. An increase in mean distance, calculated for neighbours within 40 m of the center of activity, was observed among persistent females from October to May. Statistically significant differences were obtained when mean distances were compared between females still present in the trapping area in May who then produced young and females trapped up to April but not thereafter. Thus, early access to optimally spaced, high quality home ranges may be important for reproductive success in spring. Extensive overlapping of female home ranges in winter at low population density may be a consequence of habitat conditions.

The feral cat population at a 178-ha dockland site was studied for 18 months by direct observation assisted by radio-tracking. Although food appeared to be abundant and widely distributed, the population density was low (10-15 adults km-2). There were few females in the population (7 of 22 cats of known sex) and little breeding success: only one weaned litter was seen during the entire study. Home range sizes were similar for males and females, and were much smaller (15 +/- 17 ha and 10+/-7 ha, respectively) than would be expected from the low density. The cats were mostly solitary rather than group-living, with little contact or social interaction. The implications of the findings for feral cat control are discussed, with particular emphasis on emergency measures for rabies outbreaks.

Many forms of polygyny are observed across different animal groups. In some species, groups of females may remain with a single male for breeding, often referred to as “harem polygyny”. The environment and the amount of habitat available for feeding, mating and oviposition may have an effect on the formation of harems. We aimed to determine how the surrounding environment (a harvested or unharvested pine plantation) and availability of local substrate affect the harems of the bark beetle, Ips grandicollis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae). In a harvested pine plantation with large amounts of available habitat, the population density of these beetles is much higher than in unharvested plantations. We found the number of females per male to be significantly greater in the harvested plantation than the unharvested one. Additionally, the amount of substrate available in the immediate local vicinity (the number of logs in replicate piles) also influences the number of beetles attracted to a log and size of individual harems. We also examined how females were distributing themselves in their galleries around the males’ nuptial chamber, as previous work has demonstrated the potential for competition between neighbouring females and their offspring. Females do not perform clumping, suggesting some avoidance when females make their galleries, but they also do not distribute themselves evenly. Female distribution around the male’s nuptial chamber appears to be random, and not influenced by other females or external conditions.

Koala dispersal was investigated as part of a detailed ecological study of a nationally significant koala population located 20 km south-east of Brisbane, Queensland. From 1996 to 2000, 195 koalas from three sites were captured and fitted with radio-collars. A total of 40 koalas (23 males and 17 females) dispersed from these sites. Most (93%) dispersing individuals were 20–36 months of age. Three adult females (more than 36 months old) dispersed and no adult males dispersed during the study. A significantly higher proportion of young males dispersed than females. Dispersal occurred between June and December, with most dispersal of males commencing in July and August and that of females commencing between September and November prior to, and early in, the annual breeding season. The mean straight-line distance between the natal and breeding home ranges for males and females was similar and was measured at 3.5 km (range 1.1–9.7 km) and 3.4 km (range 0.3–10.6 km) respectively. Dispersing males and females tended to successfully disperse south and west of their natal home ranges and were generally unable to successfully disperse to urban areas within the study area, as a high proportion of the mortality of dispersing koalas was associated with attacks by domestic dogs and with collisions with vehicles on roads. Information from other studies indicates that most young koalas disperse from their natal areas. It is likely that the social behaviour and mating systems of koala populations provide mechanisms for young koalas to disperse. The potential role of dispersal in the dynamics of regional koala populations is discussed.

The Water Rat Hydromys chrysogaster is Australia's largest amphibious rodent, occupying freshwater rivers, lakes, and coastal and estuarine habitats throughout the continent (Watts and Aslin 1981). Little is known of the species' social organisation or use of space in the wild although Harris (1978) suggested that adults might be intrasexually aggressive. The home ranges of all sex and age classes overlap to some extent but home ranges of adults of the same sex appear to overlap less (Harris 1978). Adult males occupy the largest home ranges which overlap those of one or more females. In captivity individuals kept in groups form hierarchies in which only the dominant females usually breed successfully (Olsen 1982). Fighting occurs primarily among males, with the highest incidence of injuries observed at the beginning of the main September-March breeding season (Olsen 1980, 1982). The results of trapping studies indicate that population density may vary considerably, with the greatest numbers of animals typically occupying man-modified habitats such as irrigation channels or fish farms (McNally 1960, Watts and Aslin 1981, Smales 1984). Aggressive behaviour appears to be related to pelage colour (phenotype) and population density; the higher the density the greater the number of injured individuals (Olsen 1980).

Plantations are the most common means of reforestation following stand-replacing wildfires. As wildfires continue to increase in size and severity as a result of fire suppression or climate change, establishment of plantations will likely also increase. Plantations’ structural characteristics, including dense, uniform spacing and abundant ladder fuels, present significant wildfire hazards. Large-scale fuels reduction techniques may be necessary to reduce potential fire behavior in plantations and to protect surrounding forests. In the present study, four different manipulations aimed at reducing potential fire behavior in a Sierra Nevada pine plantation are compared. The treatments include: mechanical shredding, or mastication, of understorey vegetation and small trees; mastication followed by prescribed fire; fire alone; and controls. Fire behavior modeling shows that mastication is detrimental whereas prescribed fire is effective in reducing potential fire behavior at moderate to extreme weather conditions. Predicted fire behavior was compared with actual values from the prescribed burns in an effort to explore the limitations of fire modeling. Fire behavior predictions were similar to field observations in the more structurally homogeneous stands, but differed greatly where mastication created forest openings and patchy fuels distributions. In contrast to natural stands, the homogeneity of pine plantations make the results of the present work applicable to other regions such as the south-eastern US, where similar fuels reduction techniques are used to increase fire-resistance and stand resilience.

Abstract The long-tailed pygmy rice rat Oligoryzomys longicaudatus (Rodentia, Cricetidae) experiences marked population density fluctuations. This species is the major reservoir of the Andes orthohantavirus associated with the hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in southern Argentina, and information on dispersal patterns at different population densities, or differences in dispersal between the sexes during those periods, could contribute to understanding risk of viral transmission among individuals. We examined the spatial genetic structure of O. longicaudatus at a local scale to elucidate how variation in population density influences dispersal patterns. Effective dispersal levels were estimated through spatial genetic autocorrelation (SGA) analyses in periods of different density, and for females and males separately, within an area of 510 × 180 m, using seven microsatellite loci. In autumn (high-intermediate and intermediate densities), SGA was primarily determined by females, which show philopatric behavior in defense of their nests and newborns. In summer (low density), neither sex showed SGA, which could be due to spacing behavior combined with high recruitment rates among adjacent environments. At high-intermediate densities, females remained close to each other, contracting their home ranges. These established individuals would “fence” the area, preventing the immigration of individuals from proximate areas, until population density declines again. We detected differential patterns of effective dispersal for both sexes in different stages of the annual and inter-annual population phases of O. longicaudatus. Since high levels of gene flow were reported for both sexes in summer and for males in all analyzed seasons, the transmission risk of diseases such as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome would be high at a local scale. La densidad poblacional del ratón “colilargo” Oligoryzomys longicaudatus (Rodentia, Cricetidae) experimenta marcadas fluctuaciones. Esta especie es el principal reservorio del ortohantavirus Andes, asociado con el síndrome pulmonar por hantavirus en el sur de Argentina. El conocimiento sobre los patrones de dispersión a diferentes densidades poblacionales y entre los sexos durante esos períodos, podría contribuir a evaluar el riesgo de transmisión viral entre individuos. Examinamos la estructura genética espacial de O. longicaudatus a escala local para determinar de qué manera las variaciones en la densidad poblacional influyen sobre los patrones de dispersión del roedor. Los niveles de dispersión efectiva se estimaron mediante análisis de autocorrelación genética espacial (AGE) utilizando siete loci de microsatélites, dentro de un área de 510 × 180 m. Los análisis se hicieron en distintos períodos de densidad para la población general y para hembras y machos por separado. En otoño (densidad alta-intermedia e intermedia), la AGE estuvo determinada principalmente por las hembras, lo que podría explicarse por su comportamiento filopátrico en relación a la defensa de sus nidos y crías. En verano (baja densidad), ninguno de los sexos mostró AGE, debido a un comportamiento de espaciamiento combinado con altas tasas de reclutamiento entre ambientes adyacentes con diferentes recursos. A densidades altas-intermedias, las hembras permanecieron cerca una de la otra, contrayendo su área de acción. Estos individuos cercarían el área, evitando la inmigración de individuos de áreas cercanas, hasta que la densidad poblacional disminuya nuevamente. Detectamos patrones diferenciales de dispersión efectiva para ambos sexos en cada una de las fases de densidad poblacional (anual e interanual) de O. longicaudatus. El riesgo de transmisión del síndrome pulmonar por hantavirus sería elevado a escala local, dado que se detectaron altos niveles de flujo génico para ambos sexos en verano y para los machos en todas las estaciones analizadas.

We examined the effects of population density on body size and burrow characteristics ofUca bengaliCrane, 1975. We predicted that (1) males in high-density areas (HD) should be larger in size and build higher quality burrows than males in low-density areas (LD), and (2) HD females should be larger in size, but build lower quality burrows than LD females, as HD females can find higher numbers of good quality male burrows around them for breeding and egg incubation. Our results showed that males and females in HD were larger in size than those in LD. Since HD males were larger in size, they built higher quality burrows than males in LD. On the other hand, even though LD females were smaller in size than HD ones, they built higher quality burrows than HD females. Our results thus indicate that density effects both body size and burrow characteristics.
