Evaluation of forest fire retardant removal from forest fuels by rainfall

Long-term forest fire retardants for fire prevention purposes are currently used, or are under consideration, in many parts of the world. Their use requires, among other things, knowledge about weathering of retardants with time, which may lead to the need for re-application. Rainfall is a factor that can lead to retardant depletion from the fuels. In this study, the rate of depletion was evaluated experimentally using Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) needles. The needles were made into small bundles and immersed in retardant, which was FIRE-TROL 936 concentrate, diluted to 20% (v/v) with water. The retardant-treated needles, after drying, were exposed to natural rain in three different rainfall events, and retardant depletion was measured. A regression equation was developed with percentage retardant removal as the dependent variable. The natural logarithm of rainfall quantity, expressed in mm of rain, and the duration of rain, expressed in min, were the two independent variables. A simple equation can be used to support pre-suppression planning and to assess environmental effects.

The application of fire retardants for forest fire prevention purposes can result in chemicals leaching from soil to the drainage water during the annual rainfall period. In addition, wildland fires can have an impact on the leaching of various chemicals from treated forest soils. In leachates, large concentrations of phosphorus (P) – one of the major components of long-term retardants – could affect the groundwater quality. In this present study, the leaching of phosphorus (contained in FIRE-TROL 931 – a long-term fire retardant based on polyphosphates) from a typical Mediterranean forest soil, was studied at the laboratory scale. The concentrations of P from the application of retardant in the resulting leachates from pots, containing forest soil and pine trees (Pinus halepensis), alone and in combination with fire, were determined by an inductively coupled plasma analytical method. The leaching of P, under the conditions used, was found to be a small percentage of the initially applied P quantities. However, it was different among the treated samples affected by both plant and fire conditions.

Indonesia is the fourth longest coastal country in the world, so it has the potential to become a salt exporting country. But appareantly, Indonesia has very high salt imports. This paper seeks to raise the irony bya modeling Indonesian salt imports. Based on various theories and result of previous studies, this paper proposes the price of imported salt, the real exchange rate, the need for salt, and domestic production as an independent variable. The sample used stretches from 2001 to 2018. This paper uses a time series model to analyze data. With the conditional ECM (error correction model), this paper finds that in the short or long term, all selected independent variables have a significant effect on the volume of salt imports, although the exchange rate requires lag to influence the import. This paper suggests increasing the education of salt farmers related to the salt content desired by industry.

Since the beginning of the 1930s research has been directed towards improving the effectiveness of water as a forest fire extinguishing agent. Throughout this time various chemical substances have been added to the water, and this is still the case today. Among these substances are the various types of long-term forest fire retardant, which maintain their ability to alter combustion when the water has been removed by evaporation. In order to provide an account of the current state of development of studies on long-term forest fire retardants, we carried out a bibliographic analysis with special attention to work done after 1976 on the different aspects that influence the final effectiveness of forest fire retardant: quality (programs and evaluation), effectiveness, application and environmental impact on streams and aquatic organisms, vegetation and humans. The scope of this work covers the wide subject of fire retardants and it introduces significant work related to all the aspects of fire retardant use.

Predominant analyses of energy offer insufficient theoretical and political-economic insight into the persistence of coal and other fossil fuels. The dominant narrative of coal powering the Industrial Revolution, and Great Britain's world dominance in the nineteenth century giving way to a U.S.- and oil-dominated twentieth century, is marred by teleological assumptions. The key assumption that a complete energy “transition” will occur leads some to conceive of a renewable-energy-dominated twenty-first century led by China. After critiquing the teleological assumptions of modernization, ecological modernization, energetics, and even world-systems analysis of energy “transition,” this paper offers a world-systems perspective on the “raw” materialism of coal. Examining the material characteristics of coal and the unequal structure of the world-economy, the paper uses long-term data from governmental and private sources to reveal the lack of transition as new sources of energy are added. The increases in coal consumption in China and India as they have ascended in the capitalist world-economy have more than offset the leveling-off and decline in some core nations. A true global peak and decline (let alone full substitution) in energy generally and coal specifically has never happened. The future need not repeat the past, but technical, policy, and movement approaches will not get far without addressing the structural imperatives of capitalist growth and the uneven power structures and processes of long-term change of the world-system.

In The Body in Pain, Elaine Scarry analyzes the structure of torture as an unmaking of the world in which the tools that ought to support a person’s embodied capacities are used as weapons to break them down. The Security Housing Unit (SHU) of California’s Pelican Bay State Prison functions as a weaponized architecture of torture in precisely this sense; but in recent years, prisoners in the Pelican Bay Short Corridor have re-purposed this weaponized architecture as a tool for remaking the world through collective resistance. This resistance took the form of a hunger strike in which prisoners exposed themselves to the possibility of biological death in order to contest the social and civil death of solitary confinement. By collectively refusing food, and by articulating the meaning and motivation of this refusal in articles, interviews, artwork, and legal documents, prisoners reclaimed and expanded their perceptual, cognitive, and expressive capacities for world-making, even in a space of systematic torture.

There is a culture of disengagement from social consideration in engineering disciplines. This means that first year engineering students, who arrive planning to change the world through engineering, lose this passion as they progress through the engineering curriculum. The community driven technology innovation and investment program described in this paper is an attempt to reverse this trend by fusing community engagement with the normal engineering design process. This approach differs from existing project or trip based approaches – outreach – because the focus is on local communities with which the university team forms a long-term partnership through weekly in-person meetings and community driven problem statements – engagement.

Recently, a new Ostrowski type inequality on time scales for k points was proved in [G. Xu, Z. B. Fang: A Generalization of Ostrowski type inequality on time scales with k points. Journal of Mathematical Inequalities (2017), 11(1):41-48]. In this article, we extend this result to the 2-dimensional case. Besides extension, our results also generalize the three main results of Meng and Feng in the paper [Generalized Ostrowski type inequalities for multiple points on time scales involving functions of two independent variables. Journal of Inequalities and Applications (2012), 2012:74]. In addition, we apply some of our theorems to the continuous, discrete, and quantum calculus to obtain more interesting results in this direction. We hope that results obtained in this paper would find their place in approximation and numerical analysis.
