Taxonomy and reproduction in Australian species of Diliphus (Dictyotales, Phaeophyta)

Eight species of Dilophus are recognised for Australia. Detailed descriptions are given for five species, D. fastigiatus, D. gunnianus, D. intermedius, D. marginatus and D. robustus. D. moniliformis and D. crinitus from Western Australia and D. decumbens from subantarctic Macquarie I. remain poorly known. Sporophytes and gametophytes are reported for the five species providing first records of sporophytes of D. robustus, female gametophytes of D. intermedius, and both male and female gametophytes of D. robustus and D. marginatus. The arrangement and structure of sporangia and gametangia have been intensively studied and many reproductive characters not previously used in species discrimination have been incorporated into species' descriptions and used to develop species' concepts. Species are delimited on the following combination of characters: arrangement, size and structure of sporangia, arrangement and structure of gametangia, and the number of medullary cell layers.

Eleven species of Dictyopteris are recognised for Australia. The tropical species D. australis (Sonder) Askenasy, D. deliculata Lamouroux, D. plagiogramma (Montagne) Vickers, D. repens (Okamura) Børgesen, D. serrata (Areschoug) Hoyt and D. woodwardia (R.Brown ex Turner) C.Agardh are recorded for warmer coasts, although isolated populations of D. australis occur in the Gulfs region of South Australia. Dictyopteris acrostichoides (J.Agardh) Bornet and D. crassinervia (Zanardini) Schmidt are endemic to eastern Australia, with D. acrostichoides also extending to the eastern end of the southern coast. Dictyopteris gracilis Womersley and D. muelleri (Sonder) Reinbold occur on temperate southwestern and southern coasts. The west coast species Dictyopteris secundispiralis J.A.Phillips sp. nov. is described, and D. nigricans Womersley is reduced to a taxonomic synonym ofD. muelleri. Detailed comparative studies undertaken on these species have identified several new taxonomically-informative characters useful for generic circumscription and species discrimination. Thallus branches which have a cortical layer composed of large cuboidal cells and reproductive organs scattered in fertile zones are additional characters which characterise the genus. Australian species of Dictyopteris are now well defined by differences in several distinctive vegetative and reproductive characters such as thallus morphology, blade cell layer number, structure of the thallus apex, presence of marginal teeth and lateral veins, distribution and structure of hair bundles, sporangia, oogonia and antheridial sori.

This is the first revision of Neogoniolithon species on the east coast of Mexico based on both DNA sequences (psbA) and morpho-anatomical characters. Nine species names are provisionally applied based on morpho-anatomical comparisons with type specimens or with species descriptions: N. accretum, N. acropetum, N. erosum, N. mamillare, N. propinquum, N. rhizophorae, N. solubile, N. spectabile and N. strictum. For none of these species was type or topotype material sequenced, but all have their type localities in the subtropical or tropical western Atlantic Ocean. Neogoniolithon siankanensis is described on the basis of a distinctive branched thallus, apical tetrasporangial conceptacles and DNA sequence. Another four species are present, each characterized by DNA sequence, but insufficient reproductive material was available to adequately describe these species. A suite of vegetative and reproductive characters can adequately segregate the currently named Mexican east coast Neogoniolithon species, including 1) branched versus unbranched thalli, 2) monomerous versus dimerous construction, 3) disposition of trichocytes, 4) interior dimensions of mature tetrasporangial conceptacles, 5) number of cell layers comprising tetrasporangial conceptacle roof and 6) shape of cells that line tetrasporangial pore canal. Morpho-anatomical descriptions and distributions are provided for all named species.

Persectania ewingii (Westwood) is one of the more important armyworms in southern Australia and Tasmania. Conflicting information about its ,ecology in Tasmania and Western Australia has led to a critical examination of the identity of specimens referred to this species from various parts of its reputed range. It is shown that a second species, P. dyscrita, sp. nov., which is apparently restricted to areas of southern Australia with a low summer rainfall, has previously been confused with P. ewingii. In New Zealand, a third distinct species, P. acema (Walker), has been misidentified as P. ewingii. P. ewingii and P. dyscrita are confined to Australia, and P. aversa to New Zealand. The male and female genitalia of the three species are figured and a key to the two Australian species is provided.

Apalochrini comprises nearly half of the genera of Australian Melyridae, which are all recognized by male specific characters, and are commonly found on grasses, flowers and riverside or seashore rocks. Here we describe a new genus Salsolaius gen. nov. from Lake Way of Western Australia, representing the first known genus of Australian Melyridae inhabitating in salt lakes. The new genus can be easily distinguished by asymmetrically biserrate antennae and exposed apical abdomen from above in both male and female, the former characters is firstly found in Melyridae. Consequently, Salsolaius biserratus sp. nov. was described as the type species of this genus. An updated key to genera of Australian Apalochrini is provided.

The reproductive and associated organs of both male and female T. georgianus are briefly described. In females, only the right ovary is functional and pregnancies occur only in the right horn. They are monovular and the corpus luteum occupies most of the ovary and is deeply embedded in its stroma. Females are monotocous and the gestation period is probably about 4 months, young being born from October to February. They are monestrous and there is an autumn and early winter dioestrousanoestrous period. Spermatozoa are not stored in the reproductive tract of females and copulation appears to coincide with the oestrous condition. In males, spermatogenesis proceeds throughout the year and spermatozoa are present in the epididymis and vas deferens in all months that males were collected (no records for December). Spermatozoa are also found in the ampulla of Henle and vesicula seminalis in most months of the year. The position of the testes varies with season: in summer they descend to the scrota1 sacs; in autumn, winter, and spring they are more abdominal.

The Australian species of the small heterogastrid genus Parathyginus Scudder, 1957 have been reviewed, resulting in the establishment of the junior subjective synonymy of P. doddi (Distant, 1918) with P. signifer (Walker, 1872), and the description of two new species, P. australis sp. nov. and P. acuminatus sp. nov. A redescription of the genus is provided with emphasis on male and female genitalia characters, along with a key to all included Australian species. Male genitalia, particularly the details of the aedeagus, have been rarely studied in this genus or for that matter the family Heterogastridae particularly due to the difficulty in inflating the inflatable sections. In this study, therefore, an attempt was made to fully inflate and describe the aedeagus of all the species included in this contribution, as well as of Heterogaster urticae (Fabricius, 1775), the type species of the oldest genus Heterogaster Schilling, 1829, of the family Heterogastridae.

Four species of angel sharks (family Squatinidae) occur in temperate and subtropical Australian waters. Two of these, Squatina albipunctata sp. nov. and S. pseudocellata sp. nov., which occur mainly off subtropical eastern and western Australia respectively, are formally described and illustrated. The new species differ from temperate Australian species, S. australis and S. tergocellata, in morphometrics, meristics, squamation, and coloration. Another new angel shark, S. legnota sp. nov. from eastern Indonesia, is compared to these species. Unlike Australian Squatina, it has unfringed (rather than fringed) barbels on its nasal flap.

Examination of museum specimens belonging to the cyphophthalmid Gondwanan family Pettalidae has rendered a collection of specimens placed in the new genus Karripurcellia. The genus includes three species, K.�peckorum, sp. nov., K. sierwaldae, sp. nov. and K. harveyi, sp. nov., from the Pemberton area in Western Australia. These are the first cyphophthalmid species found outside Queensland in Australia. Karripurcellia, gen. nov. is distinguished from other Australian pettalids by the lack of modifications in the anal plate, as well as the lack of the typical male anal glands of pettalids, sironids and the stylocellid genus Fangensis Rambla, 1994. Two of the species, K. peckorum, sp. nov. and K. sierwaldae, sp. nov., live sympatrically and have been collected in the same litter samples in one locality. The proposition of the new genus is accompanied by a cladistic analysis of all pettalid genera and most species within each genus, with the exception of the species-rich genus Rakaia Hirst, 1925. The cladistic analysis supports the monophyly of the Karripurcellia, gen. nov. species, but their sister-group relationships are unclear. However, the remaining Australian species cluster with the pettalids from New Zealand and South Africa, but not with Karripurcellia, sp. nov.

The genus Lanocira Hansen, 1890 is recorded from the southwestern Pacific for the first time. Lanocira grebarree sp. nov. from the Great Barrier Reef is described, and Lanocira gardineri Stebbing, 1904 and Lanocira sp. cf. anasicula Jones, 1982 are recorded from the Great Barrier Reef and Hibernia Reef, in the Timor Sea off Western Australia, respectively. Lanocira grebarree sp. nov. can be identified by the anteriorly rounded, upturned and short rostral process in males in combination with the lack of stiff setae on the dorsal surface of the pleotelson. The similar L. gardineri Stebbing, 1904 is distinguished from L. grebarree sp. nov. by the presence of stiff hyaline setae on the dorsal surface of the pleotelson. A key is provided to the Australian species of Lanocira.
