To analyse characteristic patterns of dynamic and chronic photoinhibition within a plant community, a new technique is proposed, which is based on the long- and short-term recovery time of maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII (F v/F m) after environmental stress. Chronic photoinhibition was determined as a sustainable decrease in predawn F v/F m, occurring during periods of prolonged stress, whereas dynamic photoinhibition was assessed from the fully reversible diurnal decline in F v/F m. Applied to a Mediterranean macchia ecosystem, this definition allowed the characterization of typical annual patterns of chronic and dynamic photoinhibition. Both types of photoinhibition were highest during summer drought. However, differences emerged among the ten dominant macchia species regarding their susceptibility to chronic photoinhibition during different seasons. Chronic and dynamic photoinhibition were dependent on leaf orientation. Semi-deciduous species avoided enhanced chronic photoinhibition through a reduction of excessive light interception by vertical foliage orientation during summer, whereas evergreen sclerophylls did not exhibit pronounced structural photoprotective mechanisms. Chronic and total photoinhibition were significantly correlated with predawn and midday water potentials, respectively, and a grouping of the macchia species into three functional groups is proposed according to this relationship.

Drought stress significantly limits cotton growth and production due to the necessity of water at every stage of crop growth. Hence, it is essential to identify tolerant genetic resources and understand the mechanisms of drought tolerance in economically and socially important plants such as cotton. In this study, molecular and physio-biochemical investigations were conducted by analyzing different parameters by following standard protocols in three different cotton species, namely TM-1 (Gossypium hirsutum), Zhongmian-16 (Gossypium arboreum), and Pima4-S (Gossypium barbadense). Drought stress significantly decreased plant growth, chlorophyll content, net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs), maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm), and relative water content. TM-1 resulted in more tolerance than the other two species. The accumulation of proline, soluble proteins, soluble sugars, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and superoxide radicals (O2•−) increased significantly in TM-1. In addition, TM-1 maintained the integrity of the chloroplast structure under drought conditions. The relative expression level of drought-responsive genes including coding for transcription factors and other regulatory proteins or enzymes controlling genes (ERF, ERFB, DREB, WRKY6, ZFP1, FeSOD, CuZnSOD, MAPKKK17, P5CR, and PRP5) were higher in TM-1 under drought, conferring a more tolerant status than in Zhongmian-16 and Pima4-S. The findings of this research could be utilized for predicting a tolerant cotton genotype as well as evaluating prospective cotton species in the variety development program.

A nickel-catalyzed synthesis of 1,3-diaryl-6H-pyrazino[2,1-b]quinazolin-6-one was developed. This method enabled to access valuable pyrazino-fused quinazolinones with tolerance of many functional groups even at room temperature. The desired pyrazino-fused quinazolinones emit...

We present image processing algorithms for a new technique of ceramic proppant crush resistance characterization. To obtain the images of the proppant material before and after the test we used X-ray microtomography. We propose a watershed-based unsupervised algorithm for segmentation of proppant particles, as well as a set of parameters for the characterization of 3D particle size, shape, and porosity. An effective approach based on central geometric moments is described. The approach is used for calculation of particles’ form factor, compactness, equivalent ellipsoid axes lengths, and lengths of projections to these axes. Obtained grain size distribution and crush resistance fit the results of conventional test measured by sieves. However, our technique has a remarkable advantage over traditional laboratory method since it allows to trace the destruction at the level of individual particles and their fragments; it grants to analyze morphological features of fines. We also provide an example describing how the approach can be used for verification of statistical hypotheses about the correlation between particles’ parameters and their crushing under load.

Responses ofUlva proliferaandUlva linzato Cd2+stress were studied. We found that the relative growth rate (RGR), Fv/Fm, and actual photochemical efficiency of PSII (Yield) of twoUlvaspecies were decreased under Cd2+treatments, and these reductions were greater inU. proliferathan inU. linza.U. proliferaaccumulated more cadmium thanU. linzaunder Cd2+stress. WhileU. linzashowed positive osmotic adjustment ability (OAA) at a wider Cd2+range thanU. prolifera.U. linzahad greater contents of N, P, Na+, K+, and amino acids thanU. prolifera. A range of parameters (concentrations of cadmium, Ca2+, N, P, K+, Cl−, free amino acids (FAAs), proline, organic acids and soluble protein, Fv/Fm, Yield, OAA, and K+/Na+) could be used to evaluate cadmium resistance inUlvaby correlation analysis. In accordance with the order of the absolute values of correlation coefficient, contents of Cd2+and K+, Yield, proline content, Fv/Fm, FAA content, and OAA value ofUlvawere more highly related to their adaptation to Cd2+than the other eight indices. Thus,U. linzahas a better adaptation to Cd2+thanU. prolifera, which was due mainly to higher nutrient content and stronger OAA and photosynthesis inU. linza.
