A mathematical model for a group of electrons drifting in a gas in a uniform electric field is proposed. The relevance of this model for the assessment of the errors that arise from forward and backward diffusion to anode and cathode in time of flight measurements of drift velocity is discussed. The theory of steady streams from pole and dipole sources is related to that of the travelling group.

In a recent paper, Crompton, Elford, and Robertson (1970; hereafter referred to as CER) considered certain questions concerning the steady-state distribution of electrons moving in a neutral gas under the influence of a uniform electric field E. The present communication comments on some aspects of the error discussion in the Appendix of the paper by CER. The analysis will be restricted to the case of isotropic scattering.

Electron drift velocities have previously been calculated from the transient waveforms recorded with a pulsed radiolysis drift tube (PRDT) using a first order theory in which it is assumed that diffusion during the drift of the electrons to the anode effectively increases the drift distance. In this paper the modifications to the transient waveforms caused by diffusion have been analysed more accurately by using a model representation of a group of electrons drifting and diffusing in a uniform electric field between plane, parallel absorbing electrodes. It is shown that, when account is taken of loss of electrons to the electrodes by diffusion, the correction factor differs in both magnitude and sign from that assumed in the first order theory.
