Aspects of the biology of Caranx bucculentus (Teleostei: Carangidae) from the Gulf of Carpentaria, Australia

Caranx bucculentus is the most abundant secondary consumer and the most important predator of commercially important penaeids in the Gulf of Carpentaria. More than 18 000 individuals of this species were collected from 406 trawls during 13 cruises in the Gulf of Carpentaria from 1986 to 1991. The species was most abundant in coastal waters, with a maximum biomass at a depth of 28.1 m. Catches were higher in prawn-trawling grounds than elsewhere in the gulf, and prawns comprised a greater proportion of the diet than is the case for other predatory fishes. Interannual variations in biomass occurred, but there were no differences between cruises or seasons. The decreased catches at night may have resulted from vertical die1 migration of C. bucculentus. Sexual maturity is reached at 110 mm standard length and about one year of age, which is much younger than in congeners. Back-calculated birth dates of C. bucculentus show year-round recruitment that peaks in the pre-wet season months of spring, and gonadosomatic index values are generally higher in the pre-wet season than in the wet season. Gonadosomatic index values remain relatively high (> 1.0), which indicates continuous spawning by C. bucculentus in the gulf. Other large tropical species of Caranx spawn annually, in summer. C. bucculentus fecundities range from 18 000 eggs for a 120-mm fish to about 650 000 eggs for a 460-mm fish. A possible switch is seen in the sex ratio-males seem to predominate at smaller sizes, whereas females seem to predominate among bigger fish. MULTIFAN length-frequency analysis gave values of L∞ = 538.8 mm (8 years old) and K= 0.305 year -1. A growth rate of 822 mm year-1 at L∞/2 is comparable to the growth rates of other tropical carangids. The diet of C. bucculentus throughout the gulf is dominated by epibenthic crustaceans and teleosts.

Some aspects of the reproductive characteristics of the commercially important squid Sepioteuthis lessoniana (Lesson, 1830) in the coastal waters of Mandapam, Palk Bay was studied with a view to provide possible management measures in this region. A total of 984 individuals (508 males and 476 females) were collected between April, 2009 to March, 2010. The size of specimens ranged from 40 mm to 290 mm in mantle length. Sex ratio was not significantly different from the expected ratio of 1:1 except for months of July, October and December. Spawning season as revealed by seasonal maturity stages, gonadosomatic index of sexes and nidamental gland length (NGL) and dorsal mantle length (DML) ratio of females, lied between January to June with peak at February. Size at maturity as determined by graphical method was 83.5 for males and 112.5 for females.

Portunus pelagicus a commercially important crab species found in Chilika lagoon constitutes about 20% of the total crab production. The carapace width (CW) ranges from 4.5–10.5 cm in both the sexes during the study period. The maximum abundance of male was at 6.6 to 7.5 cm CW whereas the females predominate from 6.6 to 9.5 cm CW. The relationship between carapace length (CL) and CW is linear in both sexes which indicates isometric growth. However, the relationship between CL, CW with total body weight (TW) is exponential. The food habit from gut content analysis shows that the species is highly carnivorous and the main food items include prawn carapace and appendages (27.58%), molluscan remaining (21.55%), fish bone (7.75%), seagrass (1.72%), unidentified materials (4.31%) and the mixed food (37.06%). The feeding index was found highest (80.95%) in February whereas it is lowest (60.9%) in June. The mature females are observed from May to July with a peak in July in the lagoon. The highest gonadosomatic index is found in July with an average CW of 10.5 cm. No berried females are found in the study period, which indicates that it did not spawn inside the lagoon and migrates to the sea during the rainy season.

Here is a communicating about time differences between branch and diameter growth in a tree community of ten species in Neotropical savanna ("cerrado") of Central Brazil. This work was conducted to study branch expansion and diameter growth in a period of one year between 2006 and 2007. Branch growth had begin in middle dry season and had the peak occurrence during the dry period in September, while diameter growth had begin in late dry season and peaked in the middle of wet season in December. The majority of species followed the same pattern. Branch growth did not have relation with rainfall, while diameter growth had a clear and positive relation with rainfall records. These results suggested that branch growth was not depend on rainfall but only on water status recover, while diameter growth probably depends strongly on water and to carbon assimilation that occurs after branch and leaf expansion.

A total of 593 samples of Lethrinus lentjan (Lacepede, 1802) were collected from the Red Sea, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to study their productive biology and spawning season of the local population. Sampling was carried out on a monthly basis for a period of one year. The monthly sex ratios indicated that females were dominant throughout the study period, with an overall male:female sex ratio of 1:7.98, although males were larger than females. The highest monthly performance maturation index (PMI), as well as the male and female gonadosomatic index (GSI) and ovarian maturation rate (OMR) were observed in February and March. Histological examination of the gonads confirmed the process of sexual transformation in this fish species, wherein individuals mature first as female, and then change sex to male (protogynous hermaphroditism). Histological sections also showed that the sexual maturation of males of L. lenjtan comprised three main stages, while the sexual development of females could be classified into four main stages. Extended spawning in the form of batches released during different months throughout the year were recorded for this fish species, with the main spawning season in February and March, and an additional, shorter spawning season in September.

To determine the best method of pasture establishment on non-cultivable hill country (>20o slope), four treatments were compared in one year on north and south aspects at four sites with contrasting climates and soil types. Sites were located in Waikato (1), Hawke's Bay (2) and Canterbury (1). The treatments included seed mix (grasses, legumes and herbs (GLH); legumes only (LEG)) and sowing time (spring; autumn). Six weeks after sowing, seedling establishment, as a percentage of viable seeds sown, was: i) greater on south than north aspects for perennial ryegrass (31% vs 18%) and birdsfoot trefoil (5% vs 4%); ii) greater for total sown species (14% vs 8%), subterranean clover (7% vs 4%) and red clover (25% vs 14%) in the GLH than LEG mix, but greater for white clover in the LEG than GLH mix (17% vs 8%); iii) greater in autumn than spring for perennial ryegrass (36% vs 13%) and total sown grasses (22% vs 9%) but greater in spring than autumn for lotus (6% vs 3%). Plantain established well in spring in summer-wet environments, while in summer-dry environments establishment was greater in autumn. Broadcasting seed on south aspects during autumn is likely to result in the highest establishment of sown grasses and legumes, but not necessarily of herbs. The trials were conducted in an unusually wet season. Repeating a subset of the treatments at these sites will provide a greater understanding of responses to climatic variation. Dinamika populasi merupakan aspek penting sebagai dasar pengelolaan perikanan dan informasi tentang aspek tersebut pada lobster pasir masih minim di perairan Palabuhanratu. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengkaji aspek pertumbuhan, pola rekrutmen, mortalitas dan laju eksploitasi lobster pasir (Panulirus homarus) di perairan Palabuhanratu. Penelitian ini dilakukan periode Juni 2015-Mei 2016 dengan metode sensus. Lobster pasir hasil tangkapan jaring insang dasar dengan jumlah total sampel 483 ekor mempunyai panjang karapas antara 28-100 mm. Pola pertumbuhan berdasarkan hasil regresi linear memperlihatkan allometrik negatif. Hasil analisis menggunakan metode ELEFAN I (Electronic Length Frequency Analysis) menunjukan koefisien pertumbuhan lobster pasir jantan (K = 0,29 per tahun), lebih kecil dibandingkan dengan betina (K = 0,40 per tahun). Rekrutmen terindikasi dua puncak dalam setahun: yaitu pada Februari-Mei dan September-Oktober). Laju mortalitaskarena penangkapan (F) mencapai 1,9-2,2 kali laju mortalitas alami (M). Nilai Lc<Lrmemperlihatkan lobster pasir sudah tertangkap sebelum mencapaiukuran rata-rata mengerami telur atau ukuran kematangan reproduktif. Laju eksploitasi lobster pasir mencapai 32-38% di atas laju eksploitasi optimum, sehingga lobster pasir sudah mengalamieksploitasi yang berlebih.Population dynamics is an important aspect as basic of fisheries management and little information of this aspect for spiny lobster fishery in Pelabuhanratu waters. This research aims to evaluate of growth aspects, recruitment pattern, mortality, and exploitation rate of scalloped spiny lobster (Panulirus homarus) in Palabuhanratu waters. This research was conducted in June 2015 until May 2016 using census method. The size of P. homarus captured using bottom gill-net with total sample 483 specimen was between 28-100 mm carapace lengths (CL). Linear regression showed that growth pattern was negative allometric. The growth coefficient of male (K = 0.29 per year) was found smaller than female (K = 0.40 per year) based on ELEFAN I (Electronic Length Frequency Analysis) method. Recruitment seems to be accrued twice peaks a year (February to May and September to October) and the highest was at February to May. Fishing mortality (F) reached 1.9 to 2.2 times of natural mortality (M). The LcÂLr value showed that female has been caught before reached the average size of bearing eggs or reproductive maturity size. The exploitation rate of spiny lobsters reaches 32-38% above optimum level. This study suggests that the spiny lobster fishery in Palabuhanratu in the state of overexploitation.

A one-year study conducted to ascertain the prevalence and risk factors associated with helminth infection in Hangul Deer Cervus hanglu hanglu at Dachigam National Park revealed that 40.45% (89 of 220 samples) were infected with four helminth species including Heamonchus contortus, Trichuris ovis, Dictyocaulus viviparus, and Moneizia expansa.  The study signified that the infection was more prevalent during the dry season (summer and autumn) as compared to the wet season (winter and spring).  The overall prevalence of Heamonchus contortus was the highest (23.18%) followed by Trichuris ovis (8.18%), followed by Dictyocaulus viviparus (5.45%), and Moneizia expansa (3.63%).  The present study should be of importance in conserving the erstwhile state animal, listed as Critically Engendered in 2017 by IUCN.

Methods are described by which the component groups may be extracted from polymodal size frequency samples by the use of probability graph paper. Four examples are given illustrating: the solution of a distribution with more than two modes and with only one exposed flank; the coordination of fish age determinations by the two methods, length frequency analysis and scale reading; a bivariate sample where the two means coincide though the standard deviations are different; a method of correcting for truncation.
