Distribution and significance of copper, lead, zinc and cadmium in the Corio Bay ecosystem

Levels of copper, lead, zinc and cadmium in sediments, waters and mussels (Mytilus edulis) from Corio Bay (Vic.) were measured on two occasions in 1977. The bay has restricted water exchange with Port Phillip Bay and is known to have received a major input of cadmium. The respective concentrations of copper, lead, zinc and cadmium in the sediments were 2-50,2-2l0,4-398 and up to 12.6 �g/g; in the unfiltered waters, I .5-25, <0.4-11, 3.9-67 and 0.11-5.6 �g/l; and in the mussels, 4.8-21. 1.2-9.7, 105-110 and 9.8-53 �g/g on a dry weight basis. The observed levels of heavy metals are compared with threshold levels reported in the literature as causing significant interference with growth of phytoplankton and nutrient cycling by bacterial processes.

       In this paper we design a Simulink model which can be evaluate the concentration of Copper, Lead, Zinc, Cadmium, Cobalt, Nickel, Crum and Iron. So, this model would be a method to determine the contamination levels of these metals with the potential for this contamination sources with their impact. The aim of using Simulink environment is to solve differential equations individually and as given data in parallel with analytical mathematics trends. In general, mathematical models of the spread heavy metals in soil are modeled and solve to predict the behavior of the system under different conditions.

The influence of temperature and rainfall on nutrient levels, heavy metals, and etiologic agents in sludge samples collected at the Sewage Treatment Station of Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, Brazil, was verified over 24 months. The results showed high levels of nitrogen (4.7-5.2%), phosphorus (1.4-2.2%), potassium (0.076-0.106%), magnesium (0.113-0.386%), iron 5.03%) and zinc (38.2-6902.1 mg Kg-1). For most of the investigated samples, the concentration of zinc was above the maximum allowed value (2,800 mg Kg-1). The concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, chrome, copper, and lead were below the maximum values allowed by the legislation. Parasitological analyzes identified thermotolerant coliforms (0.49-160 NMP g-1) and helminth eggs (1 egg), however, in amounts less than allowed by legislation. These results are indicative of the efficiency of the sewage treatment process. The results showed a significant influence of the meteorological parameters on the concentrations of nitrogen, copper, lead, zinc and pathogens in the sludge. The results also showed a strong correlation between the concentrations of copper, lead and zinc indicating that the presence of these elements in the sewage sludge has a common origin. The results demonstrated the feasibility of using the investigated matrix as fertilizer when collected in rainy periods when it favors the dilution of the elements present in their soluble forms.

<p>Cupriavidus sp. IrC4 is a copper-resistant bacteria isolated from activated sludge in an Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant in Rungkut-Surabaya, Indonesia. The purpose of this research was to study the potency of Cupriavidus sp. IrC4 as a bioremediation agent for copper, lead, mercury, and cadmium. Resistance of Cupriavidus sp. IrC4 to heavy metals were determined by measuring the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Accumulation of copper, cadmium, and lead were determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. Cupriavidus sp. IrC4 showed multiple resistance to heavy metals. The MICs of Cupriavidus sp. IrC4 to copper, lead, mercury, and cadmium were 16 mM, 15 mM, 6 mM, and 5 mM, respectively. The growth of Cupriavidus sp. IrC4 was inhibited by the addition of CuSO4 in the medium. The bacteria survived in the presence of high copper concentration as shown by the extension of the lag phase up to 36 hours. The analysis demonstrated that the copper resistance of the bacteria was facilitated through the accumulation of copper. Cupriavidus sp. IrC4 accumulated up to 367.78 and 260.01 mg/gram dry weight of cells of copper and lead, respectively. The bacteria demonstrated growth in the medium containing the mixture of 0.5 mM copper, lead, cadmium and accumulated those heavy metals up to 0.14, 24.74, and 12.49 mg/g dry weight of cells, respectively. The high resistance and capability of Cupriavidus sp. IrC4 to accumulate heavy metals can be exploited in bioremediation process for removing heavy metals from industrial sewage. </p><p><strong>Keywords</strong>: Accumulation, copper, Cupriavidus sp. The sensitivity of 33 micromycete species to nitric compounds of copper, lead, zinc, nickel and cadmium has been determined. Absidia butleri Lendn, Mortierella vanesae Dixon-Stewart, Cunninghamella echinulata Thaxte, Curvularia tuberculata Jain, Cladosporium cladosporiodes (Fresen) G. A. de Vries and Fusarium solani (C. Mart.) Appel et Wollenw are sensitive to minimal content of the heavy metals (0.75 of maximum permissible concentration (MPC)) in the growth medium. At the same time Trixoderma longibrachiatiim Rifai, Alternaria alternatа (Fr.) Keissl and Penicillium sp. 4 demonstrated moderate growth under maximal concentration (50 MPC). It is determined that minimal content of the heavy metals in the initial stage of influence (up to 48 h) promotes growth of only Fusarium oxysporum E. F. Sm. et Swingle, while retards growth of the other species.

Considering the importance of Basidiomycotina fungi as bioindicators and the increasing tendency of air and soil contamination nowadays, content of macroelements: N, P, K, Ca, Mg and Na, and some of heavy metals (microelements): Fe, Pb, Cu, Cr, Zn in sporocarps of 22 species of macrofungi from National park Fruska Gora was analyzed in this work. The majority of them are lignicolous species from the class: Homobasidiomycetes order Aphyllophorales s. lato and two of them belong to subdivision Ascomycotina. Special attention was given to the medically important fungal species widely distributed in this area: Ganoderma lucidum, Ganoderma applanatum, Coriolus. versicolor, Flammulina velutipes, Meripilus giganteus and Omphalotus olearius. Since fungi uptake macro- and microelements from the substrate, the soil and tree samples were also analyzed. The aim of this study was to determine the common concentration data of these elements in unpolluted area. According to the obtained results, fungi tended to accumulate K, P and N with lower variability recorded than that for Ca, Mg and Na due to essential importance of these elements in fungal metabolic processes, independently from ecological group affiliation and habitats. The analysing substrate (wood) contain higher concentration of Ca and Pb in relevance to fungi. As a result of transfer factors (TFs) that were estimated from the ratio of "concentration in fungi on dry weight basis" to "concentration in the tree or soil on dry weight basis" analyzed fungi tended to accumulate Cu and Zn, and partially Cr. Among the species that accumulate microelements the following species could be emphasized: Meripilus giganteus (except for Zn) Schizophyllum commune (except for Pb), Ganoderma applanatum (except for Fe and Zn). Superaccumulators of Fe were the lignicolous, medically imortant species M. giganteus, G. lucidum, Sch. commune, and tericolous ones: C. atramentari- us, F. velutipes, and P. vernalis. Good Cu accumalators were tericolous species: Psathyrella vernalis, Morchella vulgaris, and Coprinus atramentarius, then the species possesing the rhizomorphs: Armillaria polymyces and Omphalotus olearius, and finally lignicolous species: Ganoderma applanatum and Pseudotrametes gibbosa. The highest accumulation of Zn was recorded for the species Schizophyllum commune, while the fungal species expressed the smallest tendency of accumulation of Pb, except one tericolous saprophytic species C. atramentarius. The greatest accumulation of Cr was found in tericolous species especially C. atramentarius, too. Statistical cluster analysis classified fungi mostly by location, by which the urban site is distinguished from the others, where the analyzed tericolous species were found. These data indicate that the accumulation ability is not only genetically coded, but also influenced by environmental factors. This data could be used in toxicology, pharmacology and environmental protection.

By using artificial water culture, transportation and accumulation of Sedum aizoon L. under heavy metals (copper, lead, zinc) stress were studied .The result showed that aizoon had a certain ability of accumulating heavy metals. When Cu2+ concentration was more than 40umol/L, the enrichment of copper ability had reached to the level of hyperaccumulation plants did. Besides, when Pb2+ concentration was more than 60umol/L, the aboveground part saturated; while when Pb2+ concentration was about 730 mg/kg, the underground part Pb2+ enrichment was increasing to the extent of Pb2+ concentration was 9600-16000 mg/kg. It will provide a new kind of material for phytoremediation applied in polluted environment.

The content of copper, lead, zinc and cadmium in 45 samples of city soils were determined by the method of a stripping voltammetry. Results are compared with maximum permissible concentration of analyzed metals. Existent level of pollution of soils by heavy metals was characterized and its ecological assessment was given.
