The reaction of 10 commercial potato cultivars to infection by Spongospora subterranea was evaluated in the field and in the greenhouse. Micropropagated plants were used in the greenhouse and seed pieces were used in the field. The relative susceptibilities of the cultivars when measured in the greenhouse and in the field were comparable. The overall severity of scab on tubers was 8 times higher in the greenhouse than the field. The relative susceptibilities of 3 standard cultivars (Kennebec, Katahdin and Russet Burbank) were consistent over 3 greenhouse trials. When comparing planting material in the greenhouse, the incidence and severity of scab on the progeny of micropropagated plants did not, in general, differ significantly from that on the progeny of seed potatoes. Furthermore, the incidence and severity of scab on tubers of the highly susceptible cv. Kennebec grown in the greenhouse were not affected significantly by type of potting mix (well-drained, compared with poorly drained which inhibited plant growth). Screening potato cultivars for resistance to powdery scab on a small scale in the greenhouse, using micropropagated plants, is suggested as a preliminary to the evaluation of cultivars in the field.

Spongospora subterranea is a soilborne plasmodiophorid that causes powdery scab in potato. It also transmits potato mop-top virus (PMTV), which causes necrotic arcs (spraing) in potato tubers. Three field experiments were conducted in naturally S. subterranea-infested soil to investigate the effects of two chemicals, Omega 500F (fluazinam) and FOLI-R-PLUS RIDEZ (biological extract), on powdery scab, PMTV, and changes in S. subterranea inoculum with six different potato cultivars. The efficacy of soil treatment with these two chemicals on tuber lesions, root galling, and pathogen population was also assessed in greenhouse trials. The chemical treatments did not reduce powdery scab, root gall formation, or S. subterranea inoculum in the field or greenhouse trials. Postharvest S. subterranea soil inoculum in fields varied across farms and among potato cultivars but the pathogen population consistently increased by the end of the growing season. The evaluated russet cultivars were more tolerant to powdery scab than the yellow- or red-skinned cultivars but all were susceptible to PMTV. In the field, powdery scab indices and soil inoculum changes were positively correlated, while postharvest S. subterranea inoculum was positively correlated with root galling in both greenhouse trials. Powdery scab and PMTV occurred in noninoculated potting mix, indicating that peat-based potting mix is a source for both pathogens. These results demonstrate that chemical management methods currently used by farmers are ineffective, that S. subterranea and PMTV in potting mix can cause severe epidemics in greenhouses, and that potato cultivar choices impact inoculum increases in soil.

Potato (Solanum tuberosum) selections (clones and commercial cultivars) were examined for resistance to root galling, caused by the powdery scab pathogen Spongospora subterranea f. sp. subterranea in seven field trials conducted between 2003 and 2007 in the states of Washington and Idaho. Four industry reference cultivars—Shepody, Russet Burbank, Russet Ranger, and Umatilla Russet—were used as susceptible standards. Every year, selections less susceptible than the standards were considered resistant and progressed to the next season. Selections that did not demonstrate resistance in at least two consecutive trials were discarded. Eight potato selections were more resistant to root galling than the susceptible standards in two or more trials: PA98NM38-1 was more resistant than the susceptible standards in 5 of 5 trials, PO94A009-10 in 4 of 5 trials, PA95B2-4 and PA98N5-2 in 3 of 5 trials, POR00HG5-1 in 2 of 5 trials, PO94A009-7 in 3 of 4 trials, PO94A012-2 in 2 of 3 trials, and Summit Russet in 2 of 2 trials. POR00HG5-1 has Solanum hougasii in its ancestry, while the other selections have the Mexican wild species Solanum bulbocastanum and the commercial cultivar Summit Russet appearing in their ancestry. Summit Russet is the most plausible source of resistance.

Aquaponics is a circulating and sustainable system that combines aquaculture and hydroponics and forms a symbiotic relationship between fish, plants, and microorganisms. We hypothesized that feed alone could support plant growth, but the symbiosis with fish adds some beneficial effects on plant growth in aquaponics. In this study, we created three closed culture systems, namely, aquaponics, hydroponics without nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), and aquaculture, and added the same amount of feed containing N and P to all the treatments in order to test the hypothesis. Accumulation of NO3− and PO43− was alleviated in aquaponics and hydroponics as a result of plant uptake. Lettuce plants grown in aquaponics grew vigorously until 2 weeks and contained a constant level of N in plants throughout the production period, whereas those in hydroponics grew slowly in the early stage and then vigorously after 2 weeks with a late increment of N concentration. These results suggest that catfish help with the faster decomposition of the feed, but, in hydroponics, feed can be slowly dissolved and decomposed owing to the absence of the fish. The bacterial community structures of the culture solution were investigated using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. At the class level, Actinobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, and Gammaproteobacteria were the major microbial groups in the solutions. Aquaponics prevented the pollution of tank solution and maintained a higher water quality compared with hydroponics and aquaculture, suggesting that aquaponics is a more sustainable cultivation system even in a small-scale system.

The period of susceptibility of potato tubers to powdery scab (Spongospora subterranea) was studied by inoculating potato plants with spores, or by watering plants in infested soil, at different stages of plant development in greenhouse conditions. Maximum susceptibility began about 1 week before the stage when 50% of stolons had swollen to at least 5-mm diameter (tuber set), and ended 3-4 weeks later. With holding irrigation water during this period reduced the severity of powdery scab by 65-75% in field experiments in 1981-82 and 1982-83, but had no apparent effect on disease severity in 3 out of 6 large-scale field trials during 1984-85.

As part of the development of organic agriculture, the identification of varieties with high resistance to pests is relevant. In the conditions of the Udmurt Republic, studies were carried out in 2017-2018 on the derno-medium-soil average carbon-free weak soil, the purpose of which was to assess new and permissive potato cultivars of different maturation times. One challenge was to identify damage to tubers by insect pests and the possibility of using them as planting material. Potato cultivars of different maturation dates were studied: early Nandina, Red Sonya, Kolette, Bellaroza, Vineta, Dzhokonda, Ranomi medium Dzhelli, Virazh, Gala, Ryabinushka, Kaptiva, Aluet late Red Fentazi, Tserata KVS, Tango. Field one-factor experiment was laid according to the method of experimental work. Tuberous analysis was carried out in accordance with GOST 33996-2016 Seed Potatoes. Technical conditions and methods of quality determination . The coefficient of adaptivity of the studied potato cultivars is calculated according to the method of L.A. Zhemkov. More crop-producing were early cultivars: Nandina, Red Sonya, Bellaroza, Ranomi average: Dzhelli, Kaptiva, Aluet late: Red Fentazi and Tserata CF. During the years of research, there was damage to potato tubers by wireworm in 2017 on average 47, and in 2018 61. The only cultivar, Ranomi, was not damaged by the wireworm in 2017. A small number of tubers was damaged by larvae of turnip moth (Agrotis segetum) (3-4) and larvae of white grub (1-2). During two years of research in the Udmurt Republic early cultivars were more adaptive, the coefficient of adaptability was 1,31 and 1,22. However, the quality of the planting material by the percentage of damaged tubers by pests does not comply with state standard. For growing in the region, early cultivars Nandin, Red Sonya, Kolette, Bellarosa, Vineta, Dzhokonda, Ranomi are more suitable from middle cultivars Dzhelli, Kaptiva and Aluet turned out to be more stable from late ripening Red Fentazi. Due to severe damage by insect pests, especially wireworms, careful sorting and bringing tubers to regulated parameters, liming of soils, and introduction of rotted organic fertilizers are necessary, as well as to place potatoes in crop rotation after legumes and cruciferous crops.

SUMMARYWhite yam (Dioscorea rotundata) is a major root crop grown throughout West Africa but one of the major factors that limits its production is the availability of good quality planting material. This paper described the results of farmer-managed demonstration plots established in 2012 and 2013 designed to promote the Adapted Yam Minisett Technique (AYMT) in Nigeria. The AYMT was developed between 2005 and 2008 to produce quality seed yam tubers at a cost that is viable for small-scale farmers. Since its development the agronomic performance of AYMT has not been explored across a large sample of farmers, and neither has there been any attempt to explore possible varietal effects although farmers have often alluded to this. This papers seeks to address these gaps in the literature and the results suggest that the AYMT does succeed in producing seed yams of the required size and the economic returns are also good. Results also suggest that there is a varietal affect with AYMT, including a significant interaction with pesticide treatment; the first time this has been demonstrated.

SUMMARYNitrogen deficiency severely limits production of the bean–maize association grown by small-scale farmers in upland Peru. Sixty-four bean Rhizobium isolates were evaluated for induction of a plant growth response in pots of soil from the area and 14 of the most promising strains of these were tested on farmers' fields in 13 trials over a three year period. Bean yields were increased by inoculation with at least one Rhizobium strain in seven of the trials, with increases ranging from 0.21 to 0.68 t ha−1. Bean yields were not increased by the application of 120 kg N ha−1 to the intercrop. Maize yields were increased by Rhizobium inoculation in nine of the 13 trials by between 0.34 and 1.85 t ha−1. Maize responded to nitrogen fertilizer on the same nine farms. This Rhizobium selection strategy, although laborious, was effective in identifying strains that can be recommended for use as inoculants by farmers in the region.
